Four Indian fishermen held by Sri Lankan navy for trespassing

News18a day ago
Colombo, Jul 22 (PTI) Four Indian fishermen were apprehended and their boat was seized by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing in the island nation's territorial waters near Mannar, officials said.
According to a statement issued by the Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday, the North Central Naval Command spotted multiple Indian fishing boats trespassing into Sri Lankan waters on Monday. Patrol vessels were deployed to drive them away, during which one Indian boat was intercepted and four fishermen were taken into custody, it said.
The vessel and the detained fishermen were later brought to the Talaimannar Pier and handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Mannar for further legal action.
The fishermen issue is a contentious one in the ties between India and Sri Lanka, with Lankan Navy personnel even firing at Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait and seizing their boats in several alleged incidents of illegally entering the island nation's territorial waters. PTI SKS SKS RD RD

12 trapped in Dhanbad mine after cave-in, say locals, MP

Incident site in Dhanbad DHANBAD/RANCHI: At least 12 miners are feared trapped in a caved-in illegal coal mine in Jamunia, around 40 km from Dhanbad district headquarters, with some feared dead, villagers and politicians said Wednesday. Police, administration and Bharat Coking Coal Ltd, however, said that so far they had not found any sign of mine collapse. The alleged incident snowballed into political brick-batting as both the governing and opposition parties attacked each other over the illegal mining menace in the coal belt, and in the state at large. "Twelve labourers are trapped while some others who managed to escape are undergoing treatment in private hospitals. Families of the trapped workers are being offered Rs 10 lakh as compensation. This is a racket where labourers are brought from other districts and used for illegal mining. After the mishap, the entry point was filled with mud to conceal the incident," Giridih MP Chandra Prakash Chaudhary claimed. On the other hand, Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy on Tuesday wrote on X, "At a place called Jamunia in Baghmara, Dhanbad, a tunnel used for illegal mining collapsed, resulting in the death of nine workers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cat Keeps Hugging Friend Before Going To The Vet – The Vet Paled When He Saw Them Tips and Tricks Undo The illegal mining mafia is engaged in disposing of the bodies of the deceased. Dhanbad deputy commissioner Aditya Ranjan told PTI, "We have rushed an NDRF team to the spot suggested but so far no sign of any such incident has been found." Dhanbad SSP Prabhat Kumar said that he had directed SDPO Baghmara to conduct a probe. Kumar, too, told PTI that "no trace of any such incident was found". He added: "Additionally, no one from any side, including family members, turned up. So far, no formal complaint has been lodged from any side." Regional nodal security officer of Bharat Coking's block-2 project, Rajiv Ranjan, also said there was no information of any such incident in the block-2 project's closed underground mine. Health, food & civil supplies and disaster management minister and Congress MLA Irfan Ansari, meanwhile, accused Bharat Coking of patronising illegal mining and demanded appropriate compensation. The state Congress attacked the Centre. "Security of mines is entirely managed by institutions like CCL and BCCL through CISF, which is directly under the Centre," said spokesperson Sonal Shanti. BJP hit back demanding a CBI probe. "It's state-sponsored deaths. The state govt and local administration are aware of illegal mining but choose to remain mum," said spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo.

Clearance from home districts of detainees key to release from holding centres in Gurgaon

1 2 Gurgaon: With police launching an operation to track Bangladeshis and Rohingyas living illegally in the city, the fate of detainees at holding centres hinges on verification reports provided by local police. Most of those in detention are from districts in Assam and West Bengal, and police, according to sources, have already forwarded their details to their counterparts in both states, seeking verification of addresses and other details. According to police, detainees will be released if they receive a positive verification report. Sources said 20 people from Assam's Dhubri, who spent around five days in the Sector 10A community centre that has been serving as a holding centre for the verification drive, have been released after the verification. They were engaged in waste collection around Kankrola and Panchgaon and can now go back to it. Some also have passports. Several of them have also presented letters from local MPs and police stations asserting their residency and Indian citizenship. However, police officers said such letters are insufficient, and clearance can only be granted following a thorough verification of documents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Are you 18-79 with no funeral insurance? He also said the Union home ministry has outlined a list of documents, such as ration cards, voter cards, birth certificates and passports, for identification and verification. "We have shared the details with respective police forces and are in contact with them to complete verification at their end. We have released some people after verification and more will be released once we receive reports from their state police," the DCP said. Outside the detention centre in Sector 10A, Mohammad Irfan from West Bengal said no one was giving them any clarity about the process. "We are concerned for our family as no one is giving clear answers," said Irfan, who was carrying his documents with him. Sofia Aalam from Assam showed a letter from the MP stating she is an Indian citizen and was going to Gurgaon for work. "All this has disrupted our work. We fear losing work opportunities in the coming days," said Sofia. According to the police, verification is taking time and that is extending the stay of people at the centre. The verification process, officials explained, aims at authenticating identity documents as there have been instances of illegal migrants acquiring fraudulent documents. Local police are tasked with verifying addresses and other details provided in these documents to ensure their legitimacy. On July 17, police requested the district administration to set up special holding centres. In their communication, they referenced a May 2, 2025 directive from the Centre mandating identification of Bangladeshis and Rohingya people at the district level. A standard operating procedure (SOP) has been developed by the Union home ministry for their deportation. The state police are responsible for this identification process, and any Bangladeshis and Rohingya people found living illegally in India are to be detained at special holding centres.

Key accused in Shine City fraud case held

Lucknow: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Wednesday arrested Tej Narayan Shukla, a key accused in the multi-crore Shine City group of companies fraud case, from Mathura. Shukla was wanted in case number 900/2020, registered under sections 409, 420, 467, 468, 471, and 120B of the IPC at Gomtinagar police station. A cash reward of ₹25,000 was announced for any information leading to his arrest. Officials stated that Shukla faces over 10 criminal cases related to cheating and financial fraud. EOW officials confirmed that Shukla faces two more cases (887/2021 and 888/2021), also registered at Gomtinagar police station, for which non-bailable warrants were issued. According to investigators, Shukla served as the president of a 'Bahubali' team within Shine City group and played a major role in luring investors with fraudulent schemes promising high returns. After the fraud came to light, Shukla fled India along with the company's prime accused Rashid Naseem and was later apprehended in Nepal. He reportedly spent 30 days in Nepal police custody before being tracked down by Indian authorities. "Shukla is a significant link in the larger conspiracy led by Rashid Naseem," an EOW officer said, adding that further interrogation is underway to uncover more details about the group's operations and the movement of siphoned funds.
