Samba beat returns as Sao Paulo ends 25-year WTA exile

Straits Times30-04-2025

Brazil's long women's tennis drought will end this September when Sao Paulo hosts a WTA tournament for the first time since the millennium, as the women's tour announced the city's return after a 25-year absence.
The WTA 250 SP Open, scheduled for the week of Sept. 8, replaces Tunisia's Jasmin Open in Monastir and will feature a 32-player singles draw and 16-team doubles competition on outdoor hard courts.
Women's tennis fans in Brazil's largest city have waited since 2000 for the tour's return, when Hungary's Rita Kuti-Kis claimed the singles crown at the Brasil Open while Argentina's Laura Montalvo and Paola Suarez captured the doubles title.
The South American addition comes during a vibrant 2025 season that has already produced 15 different singles champions across WTA 250, 500 and 1000 events, highlighted by Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva becoming the youngest-ever WTA 1000 tournament winner.
This competitive drama, coupled with the WTA's recent brand refresh, has sparked significant audience growth, with social media followers increasing 25% year-on-year through March and video views surging 163% in the first quarter, the WTA said. REUTERS

South Africa strike confident note ahead of WTC final

LONDON - South Africa are quietly confident of an upset victory in the World Test Championship final with coach Shukri Conrad warning defending champions Australia not to underestimate his inexperienced batting line-up. South Africa go into the five-day clash at Lord's, which starts on Wednesday, as underdogs but Conrad struck an optimistic tone at a press conference on Monday. "The inexperience is very apparent in terms of the number of tests played and their place in the ICC rankings. So, I think it's pretty normal that the chat is all about the bowlers when you've got guys like Kagiso Rabada, ranked two in the world, and Marco (Jansen) and (spinner) Keshav (Maharaj)," he said. "But I think there's a quiet confidence among the batting group. They got a lot of confidence, with hundreds for different players at different stages. So yeah, while there might not be superstar names among them, I think as a collective we're pretty confident." South Africa's path to the WTC final has been questioned, given they played only 12 tests over the two-year 2023-25 cycle while Australia played seven more. South Africa also did not meet Australia or England and booked their place with series wins over Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies. "Enough has been spoken about that to be honest," Conrad said. "We are here and that's all that matters and now we get a chance to walk away as the world test champions, playing Australia. It doesn't get any bigger than that." "We are quietly confident going into this game that we can pull one over them. We're a confident bunch, we play well as a unit, and if there are any vulnerabilities among them (Australia), I'm sure we'd be able to exploit that," Conrad added. Emma Raducanu has 'low expectations' heading to grass court due to injury, gives coaching updates

INTERNATIONAL: Emma Raducanu admitted that she is not expecting as much from herself as she prepares for her grass-court tournament of the season. The athlete expressed that she has been dealing with injury lately, which is affecting her preparations for the upcoming competitions. The 2021 US Open champion experienced a back spasm during her match against Danielle Collins just before the French Open, and this concern is still bothering her now. Raducanu has been making a strong comeback in her recent games, particularly during the clay-court season. With her recent performances, she is now close to returning to the top 30 in the WTA rankings. However, despite her progress, the injury limits her ability to perform her best, and it has raised concerns about whether she can fully perform in the grass court stretch of the season, which includes Wimbledon. With this, Raducanu admitted: ' I have had a small interruption with a back spasm again, so that was a bit annoying… That kind of hindered my grass prep, but the last few days I have managed to get on the grass and just begin to feel my feet.' See also 2025 Singapore Tennis Open highlights She added: 'Overall, I just have to manage what I can take care of, and if these things happen, I just need to deal with it and just keep doing the right things… But I try not to let it get to me, because I think I have a pretty good feel of when it happens, what to do, and how to manage it. It does take a few days out, but all I can do is kind of deal with what's in front of me.' Still, Raducanu declared that she is excited to participate in the WTA 500 tournament at Queen's Club despite these setbacks. She stated: 'Of course I want to win this tournament, like every tournament, but especially when it's at home… My expectations are pretty low, because I played points for the first time today, and I've had maybe two or three days on the grass courts, so it's not been much.' Updates on her coaches Alongside her health updates, Emma Raducanu also shared the latest on her coaching situation. See also Katie Boulter makes history with her first WTA clay-court victory She said that Mark Petchey will continue to work with her part-time while also working in his regular job as a tennis commentator. Moreover, Raducanu announced that coach Nick Cavaday is back in her team. Cavaday previously left her team after the Australian Open in January due to health problems. Now, he has returned to support the young athlete in this important part of the season. With this, Raducanu said: 'I'm happy to see him healthy, first of all… I mean, it's been such a long time since we were last on court together in Australia, and Mark is in Paris commentating, so Nick was around and it was nice to just have a few days with him.' She added: 'They'll both be helping me throughout the grass [season]… I think having Mark and Nick, both people who have banks of experience, and I think they can complement each other really well, and I trust both of them a lot… So that is a big fundamental for me, so I'm looking forward to this upcoming season and seeing how it goes.' In a social media post, Raducanu shared that the grass court season is about to begin and said: 'That time of year 🍀.' Netizens commented on the post and stated: 'Good luck Emma! I'm really hoping to see you in semi-finals! Let's go! ❤️🔥💪🏼,' 'Wimbledon is yours,' and 'Good luck Emma 🍀🤞 always support you no matter what.'

After a 52-year gap since the last top-tier women's event was held at the London grasscourt club, it was fitting that twice Wimbledon winner Kvitova opened proceedings on a court named after former British Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. After an impressive start on the pristine centre court lawn in front of a sizeable crowd, however, the Czech was unable to hold off her younger opponent who prevailed 2-6 6-4 6-4. Kvitova, who won her titles at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, made her comeback from a 17-month maternity break in February and gained entry to the tournament via a protected ranking. After holding serve in a marathon fifth game, the 35-year-old surged on to win the opening set and looked on course for only her second victory since returning. The rust was apparent though as world number 23 Haddad Maia worked her way back into the match and claimed the win. After levelling the match she got an early break in the deciding set and that proved decisive as she sealed a clash against American third seed Emma Navarro. "For sure (Petra) is won of the best players on this surface and it's a privilege to be here," Haddad Maia said. German qualifier Tatjana Maria also made it through as she beat former U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez 7-6 6-2.
