Samba beat returns as Sao Paulo ends 25-year WTA exile
Brazil's long women's tennis drought will end this September when Sao Paulo hosts a WTA tournament for the first time since the millennium, as the women's tour announced the city's return after a 25-year absence.
The WTA 250 SP Open, scheduled for the week of Sept. 8, replaces Tunisia's Jasmin Open in Monastir and will feature a 32-player singles draw and 16-team doubles competition on outdoor hard courts.
Women's tennis fans in Brazil's largest city have waited since 2000 for the tour's return, when Hungary's Rita Kuti-Kis claimed the singles crown at the Brasil Open while Argentina's Laura Montalvo and Paola Suarez captured the doubles title.
The South American addition comes during a vibrant 2025 season that has already produced 15 different singles champions across WTA 250, 500 and 1000 events, highlighted by Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva becoming the youngest-ever WTA 1000 tournament winner.
This competitive drama, coupled with the WTA's recent brand refresh, has sparked significant audience growth, with social media followers increasing 25% year-on-year through March and video views surging 163% in the first quarter, the WTA said. REUTERS

INTERNATIONAL: Emma Raducanu admitted that she is not expecting as much from herself as she prepares for her grass-court tournament of the season. The athlete expressed that she has been dealing with injury lately, which is affecting her preparations for the upcoming competitions. The 2021 US Open champion experienced a back spasm during her match against Danielle Collins just before the French Open, and this concern is still bothering her now. Raducanu has been making a strong comeback in her recent games, particularly during the clay-court season. With her recent performances, she is now close to returning to the top 30 in the WTA rankings. However, despite her progress, the injury limits her ability to perform her best, and it has raised concerns about whether she can fully perform in the grass court stretch of the season, which includes Wimbledon. With this, Raducanu admitted: ' I have had a small interruption with a back spasm again, so that was a bit annoying… That kind of hindered my grass prep, but the last few days I have managed to get on the grass and just begin to feel my feet.' After a 52-year gap since the last top-tier women's event was held at the London grasscourt club, it was fitting that twice Wimbledon winner Kvitova opened proceedings on a court named after former British Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. After an impressive start on the pristine centre court lawn in front of a sizeable crowd, however, the Czech was unable to hold off her younger opponent who prevailed 2-6 6-4 6-4. Kvitova, who won her titles at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, made her comeback from a 17-month maternity break in February and gained entry to the tournament via a protected ranking. After holding serve in a marathon fifth game, the 35-year-old surged on to win the opening set and looked on course for only her second victory since returning. The rust was apparent though as world number 23 Haddad Maia worked her way back into the match and claimed the win. After levelling the match she got an early break in the deciding set and that proved decisive as she sealed a clash against American third seed Emma Navarro. "For sure (Petra) is won of the best players on this surface and it's a privilege to be here," Haddad Maia said. German qualifier Tatjana Maria also made it through as she beat former U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez 7-6 6-2.
