FDOT looks to fast-track work on highly-congested stretch of I-4
Relief is coming to one of the most congested stretches of Interstate 4.
Construction is underway to widen a stretch of I-4 between US-27 and World Drive.
It has been dubbed the 'Accelerated Start Project' and it's just one piece of the Florida Department of Transportation's larger program, called 'Moving I-4 Forward.'
Only Channel 9′s Alexa Lorenzo went out to get a first hand look at how quickly crews are moving as FDOT aims to complete work by the end of the year.
Drone 9 captured a bird's-eye view on a late Wednesday morning of the area where officials said 140,000 cars travel daily.
The 7.5 mile stretch of I-4 seems to be busy at any given time on any given day.
'This is a project that's always been on the docket. However the funding wasn't quite there.' FDOT's Matthew Richardson said.
Richardson walked Lorenzo through the work happening right now on the Accelerated Start Project.
'This project is about 10 to 15 years ahead of schedule,' Richardson said.
Channel 9 saw heavy machinery out and about as crews worked on pile driving to prepare the underground infrastructure needed to add one lane in each direction.
As part of the project, drivers will also see improvements to the Champions Gate and US-27 Interchange. Overnight lane closures are already underway to help speed the project along.
'We are taking that already existing shoulder lane and we are making it the congestion relief lane ... so that's one of the innovative ways we are able to approach this to get it done quickly by the end of the year,' Richardson said.
So get used to seeing roadwork through this stretch of I-4 through Orange and Osceola counties, because construction is in high gear and the state says it is committed to getting this project done.
'It's a fast paced process and it's keeping up with that pace. We understand that we are on a timeline of having the congestion relief lanes done by the end of the year,' Richardson said.
Five larger projects that are part of the Moving I-4 Forward program will widen the highway from six lanes to as many as 12, by adding general-use and express lanes.

U.S. 231 Road Improvement Project to begin in Bay County
BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Florida Department of Transportation will begin an intersection improvement project later this summer at U.S. 231 at Pipeline Road in Bay County. According to a news release, the project will cost $2.6 million and will cause lane closures and traffic shifts. Enhancements will be made to stormwater management to include the installation of concrete curbs and gutters as well as a closed pipe drainage system. S.R. 408 ramps will close overnight at Conway
According to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), drivers should use caution due to overnight closures of the eastbound State Road (S.R.) 408 off-ramp to Conway Road (S.R. 15) (Exit 13) and the westbound S.R. 408 on-ramp from Conway Road from Sunday, June 8, to Thursday, June 12. This work is part of FDOT's resurfacing project on Conway Road from Devonshire Lane to Lake Underhill Road. Work on the ramps will start as early as 11 p.m. nightly and is expected to wrap up by 6 a.m. the next morning, with the final closure ending on Friday, June 13. Detour Information: Motorists traveling north on Conway Road who wish to access westbound S.R. 408 should turn left on Lake Underhill Road and continue west to South Street. Drivers should head west on South Street to access westbound S.R. 408. Alternatively, motorists can head east on Lake Underhill Road, then turn left onto northbound Andes Avenue to access the westbound S.R. 408 entrance ramp. Motorists traveling east on S.R. 408 who wish to access Conway Road should exit early at Bumby Avenue (Exit 12A), continue east on Anderson Street, then turn right onto Lake Underhill Road, continuing east to Conway Road. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) advises drivers of overnight closures on Interstate 4 (I-4) between Kirkman Road (S.R. 435) and S.R. 528 (Beachline Expressway) from Sunday, June 8, to Thursday, June 12. Closures start at 10 p.m. each night and reopen by 6 a.m. the next morning, with the final closure on Friday, June 13. Detour Information for June 8 to 10 Overnight Closures Motorists traveling west on I-4 who wish to access S.R. 528 will be directed to exit early at Exit 75B to southbound Kirkman Road, then continue to the Sand Lake Road (S.R. 482) ramp, staying in the left lane and turning left onto Sand Lake Road at the traffic signal, heading east to John Young Parkway (S.R. 423). Motorists will then turn right onto John Young Parkway, proceeding south to S.R. 528. Detour Information for June 11 and 12 Overnight Closures Motorists traveling west on I-4 will be directed to take Exit 75B to southbound Kirkman Road, then continue to the Sand Lake Road ramp, staying in the left lane and turning left onto Sand Lake Road at the traffic signal, heading east to John Young Parkway. Motorists will then turn right onto John Young Parkway, proceeding south to S.R. 528.
