Mangaluru: A training covering more than 60,000 people across the district has commenced as part of the International Day of Yoga, which will be observed on June 21.
District AYUSH officer Dr Mohammed Iqbal said preparations are being made for this year's International Day of Yoga in collaboration with the district administration, Ayush colleges, and yoga organisations.
Yoga training programmes are being organised for the public by yoga organisations, AYUSH colleges, and Ayushman health centres in the district, he said.
Under the Yoga Harit initiative, programmes involving environmental cleanliness and tree planting are being implemented alongside yoga practice. Under the Yoga Park initiative, a medicinal plant garden has been established at Ayushman Arogya Mandir, Balkunje, where daily yoga training is provided to the public.
Meanwhile, under the Y-Break Yoga initiative, the district AYUSH department and Ayush colleges are organising yoga postures and pranayama training that can be done by employees/public while seated at their workplace.
This helps employees who sit for long hours manage stress and boost enthusiasm at work. The AYUSH department is introducing a 5-minute yoga break during work hours, Dr Iqbal said.
Further, competitions are being organised to convey the importance of yoga to students and youth and to demonstrate its benefits under the Yoga Unplugged initiative, he added.

Mysuru may be made yoga district

1 2 Bengaluru: The health department is working on a proposal to make Mysuru a yoga district. In 2024, a visit by Ayush ministry officials revealed that Mysuru was the closest to having the mandated 50% of households practising yoga to be named yoga district. Minister of health and family welfare Dinesh Gundu Rao confirmed Tuesday that the district has a significant number of people practising yoga and sees scores of visitors every year learning to practise and teach it. Ayush commissioner Ayush Ratan Singh told TOI that 22 of 326 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (health and wellness centres) are located in Mysuru. With at least one instructor in every centre, there is a culture of daily practice among locals. Besides this, he said, there is a private university, naturopathy colleges and hospitals, and a panchakarma centre that add to the ecosystem. "The affinity for yoga in Mysuru was observed by the Ayush ministry in 2024 during their visit to the district. They believed it was a fit case for being a yoga district with close to 50% of homes practising yoga. Mysuru also has a tradition of yoga, historically," Singh added. He said the proposal has been added in the Karnataka govt's annual action plan for National Ayush Mission and is at the state-level approval stage. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 자신이 전략의 달인이라고 생각하시나요? 레이드 섀도우 레전드 Undo Lakshminarayana Shenoy, assistant director of the state ayurvedic research centre, said Gokulam, Yadavagiri and Jayalakshmipuram are prominent pockets of yoga practice. "About 20,000 foreign tourists come in annually to learn yoga in a 3-km radius of the three locations, and another 8,000 are visiting to become yoga trainers. The district has 600 yoga schools," he added. (Inputs by Raksha Hosur Pradeep)

Under the theme of 'Yoga for One Earth One Health', the AYUSH department launched five programmes — Yoga Sangam, Yoga Meditation, Yoga Dhanush, Green Yoga and Yoga Unplugged — in the district. The ministry of AYUSH launched the 'Y-Break' app, which provides guided yoga routines to help individuals de-stress and refocus during their workday. A 5-minute yoga practice began at govt offices such as Head Post Office, Ayurvedic College and Homeopathic College in Hubballi. These routines include simple asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises) and dhyana (meditation). District AYUSH officer Ganesh Kabade told TOI that the department is organising competitions, activities and educational campaigns to increase enthusiasm for yoga among the younger generation. These include yoga reels competition, yoga poster competition, yoga quiz competition and yoga essay competition. Dr Shashidhar Talakal, medical officer at AYUSH department, said the Green Yoga programme has been planned to be organised with the forest department. A plantation drive and yoga practice will be organised at the forest department office in Dharwad. Ashok Akkeri, assistant administrative officer, said the department has 18 yoga instructors to organise camps and yoga practice. Regular yoga is carried out at Ayushman health centres at Tegur, Shirur and Nigadi Village. The event at Kelgeri Lake is getting a good response as many are participating in yoga. Bhimappa Laddi, yoga instructor at the AYUSH department, said yoga brings the body and mind together and is built on three elements: movement, breathing, and meditation. Everyone should practice yoga, he said.
