Meng Ziyi's rep promises better security after trailer breach

Yahoo6 days ago
1 Aug - Meng Ziyi's camp recently released a statement promising to better secure the actress' safety, following a netizen's post about breaching into her trailer.
The issue sparked after a female netizen shared several photos of Ziyi's dog Chocolate on social media, revealing that she managed to enter the actress' trailer while visiting a filming set in May this year.
When asked how she was able to do so, she responded, "My friend knows someone in the crew."
This issue sparked backlash among fans, not only towards the netizen for violating the actress' privacy, but to the production team and her own management for the serious security breach.
In response, her agent released a statement on 30 July, saying, "Protecting Ziyi's safety and privacy is always the team's top priority. Going forward, we will continue to upgrade preventative measures, remain vigilant, and resolutely safeguard Ziyi's safety. I'm sorry for causing disappointment and worry to everyone, and I sincerely apologise again."

Maryland town works to secure storm drains after child was trapped, drowned in flash flooding

Family members of a 13-year-old boy who drowned after being trapped in an open storm drain during flash floods on Thursday, July 31, in the town of Mount Airy, Maryland, are demanding action. They want those drains covered and believe the child's death could have been prevented. A temporary grate has been placed over the drain where Mason Kearns lost his life, but it is not secure and is not the permanent solution the family wants. Mount Airy's mayor promised an evaluation of all storm drains in the town during a recent council meeting. Allison Eggleston, who is Mason Kearns' aunt, told the town council that her nephew's drowning could have been prevented. She pleaded with officials to do something to cover dangerous and open storm drains like the one where her 13-year-old nephew died. "Mason wasn't playing in a drainage ditch," Eggleston said. "He was simply walking on what he thought to be safe ground. This tragedy could have happened to any child that lived or played in that vicinity. Why doesn't a drainpipe that could easily fit a small adult not have a sturdy grate over it?" Eggleston cited a ProPublica investigation revealing at least 36 deaths over six years across the country. "Many others and I have reached out to the [homeowners' association] about our issue, and it gets pawned off to the town, and still nothing has been done," Eggleston said. "Nothing has been done. There have been no answers. It's just a matter of time before another innocent child dies." Numerous rescuers worked in water up to their waists as they desperately tried to save her nephew. "It was an absolute river running through that area. Rescuing Mason in time was impossible," Eggleston said. "Instead, it quickly turned into a recovery mission for our sweet, innocent 13-year-old boy who was just standing in the grass feet away from his home. It's nauseating to think about. Not only do these storm drains not have grates on them, but also, they are poorly maintained." Mount Airy's mayor promised to work with private property owners to secure drains. He said he is launching an inclement weather task force as floods become more common and severe. "While it is not our land, it is our responsibility to look out for the safety of our citizens," Mayor Larry Hushour said. "The town staff has been directed to look at every drainage pipe." Hushour also expressed condolences and said, "It is regrettable to me as mayor and to our town council that sometimes tragedy is what brings the best out in our town." Almost $60,000 has been raised online to benefit Kearns' family. "The objective is to find out what happened, why it happened and what can be done so this never happens again," Councilmember Stephen Domotor said. Kearns' aunt stressed she does not want to place blame. "It won't change anything," Eggleston told the council. "Mason is never coming back. But this town is responsible for finding out who failed Mason and all who loved him—taking accountability for their part in action and holding other parties to proper standards and fixing the issue. I'm not going to let my nephew's death be in vain." Maggie McBain described how she tried to rescue Kearns moments after he became trapped inside the drain. She recounted to WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren what she told his mother and brother. "I'm going to hold my breath, and I'm going to go under and put my leg up, and when you see my leg flop up, grab me and yank and pull," she said. "And we couldn't do it. …I started getting sucked in, and I almost pushed him in further." She still has bruises. McBain said this tragedy did not have to happen. "100% preventable. This place has just gotten lucky that it hasn't already happened in the last 25 years," McBain said.

Cook County Sheriff substation still not open in South Loop, despite planned June launch

A Cook County Sheriff's substation was supposed to open in the South Loop near the Roosevelt CTA Red Line stop on June 1, but hasn't even as the area continues to struggle with violent crime. The substation is marked, but not up and running yet. The Cook County Sheriff's Office said they have a presence in the area, but did not say when the substation's doors would open. A 16-year-old girl was stabbed Tuesday night just feet from the Red Line stop and where the substation is supposed to be. Chicago police said the stabbing started as an argument, and the teen was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. "This area of the South Loop has a been a problematic area for a long time, so we tried to be creative and see how we can bring more resources to this area. So I asked the Cook County Sheriff for help," said 34th Ward Alderman Bill Conway. The substation was supposed to be operable in early June, but now in early August it still isn't. "I will say I do appreciate the sheriffs are operational. They are working on it. And I do hope we can get it open as soon as possible," Conway said. According to the sheriff's office, "as soon as possible" could be as soon s Monday, saying in a statement that they are already patrolling the area and, "We are engaged in ongoing conversations with local residents, business owners, and elected officials regarding concerns about crime." Another Chicago substation for the sheriff's office in River North has focused on specific crimes like carjackings, car thefts and retail theft. "This sheriff's office is really going to be looking at overall crime, but specially looking what's going on in the Jewel parking lot here as well as at this L station as well, where there's been a lot of problems over the years," Conway said. The sheriff's office said that despite public perception, crime is down in the South Loop compared to last year. A spokesperson for the sheriff's office said as of July 29, 2025 there have been 88 reported violent crimes in the Near South Side community area, down from 100 in the same time period in 2024, 108 in 2023 and 117 in 2022. The sheriff's office said when adjusted for population, the Near South Side saw 33 violent crimes per 10,000 people, which is below the citywide average of 57 crimes per 10,000 people. The Sheriff's Office is finalizing the installation of infrastructure at the South Loop substation and is working to open the location as soon as Monday. This space was offered to us as it was vacant and the community requested our presence in the area. We are engaged in ongoing conversations with local residents, business owners, and elected officials regarding concerns about crime. Even though the substation is not officially open, we have been assigning officers to patrol in the area. We look forward to our partnership with the community and addressing crime and quality of life concerns, as we are doing at our substations in Austin, Auburn Gresham, River North, Water Tower Place, and One Chicago.
