Can India exist without Bengali? Can the world exist without Bengali?: Didi
Kamarkundu/Kolkata: "Can India exist without Bengali? Can the world exist without Bengali," roared CM Mamata Banerjee on Thursday, taking aim at BJP after its Bengal minder Amit Malviya, in a bid to justify Delhi Police's "Bangladeshi language" notice, said "there was no language called Bengali. " Speaking of Bangla's contributions to the culturescape of the world, Banerjee threw out a challenge: "Who is saying that Bengali is not a language? Who is dismissing everything... They say my comments should be brought under the NSA. Do whatever you can, I will keep speaking." The CM was addressing a gathering during the laying of the foundation stone of a guesthouse, a 'bhog ghar' and a parking lot at Kamarpukur Ramakrishna Mission Math. "In which language did he (Swami Vivekananda) speak? Bengali. Remember this," Banerjee said, adding, "Whether it is Swamiji, Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, or Sarada Maa... they have used sweet, short but impactful words for us to follow. These teachings are like nectar... which language did they speak in?" Social reformers like Vidyasagar and Raja Rammohan Roy, heroes like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose... in which language did they speak," the CM asked. While not naming BJP, the CM said those who had never read the Vedas were creating divisions in society while posing as guardians of Hindusim. She added that she believed in the spirituality of Sri Ramakrishna who spoke of "joto mot toto poth" (all spiritual paths lead to the same divine idyll). "Our parents taught us this as a life-mantra. But they... do they understand the essence of religion," she asked. The CM also referred to the dargah at Belur Math to highlight Bengal's culture of unity and reiterated that everyone, from all corners of the world, were welcome in the state. Earlier, Banerjee announced the creation of the Joyrambati-Kamarpukur Development Board, and the grant of Rs 10 crore towards it. "I am appointing Swami Lokattarananda Maharaj as the chairman. He will decide on the board members and send the list to the DM," she said. She also thanked the mission for helping the needy.

Heat on ‘Miya Muslims' in upper Assam following evictions
1 2 Guwahati: Youth and student organisations in upper Assam's oil, tea, and coal-rich districts have intensified their opposition against 'Miya Muslims,' migrants of Bangladeshi origin settled in the region, following govt-led evictions across the state. On Tuesday, activists of All Tai Ahom Students' Union (Atasu) intercepted 16 'Miya Muslims' near the Tinsukia ASTC bus stand. The group, originally from Barpeta, Dhubri, and South Salmara Mankachar districts, was reportedly en route to Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Tinsukia for working as masons or labourers. However, Atasu president Milan Buragohain alleged that their true intention was to occupy govt and forest lands in upper Assam. The activists forcibly redirected the migrants back to lower Assam districts, underscoring the growing regional tensions. "They could tell the names of their villages but not specific details of their neighbours, panchayats, etc. They could not even give details of their specific destination also. They are suspected illegal migrants. We are sure that their target was to encroach govt and forest lands," Buragohain told TOI. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Atasu issued a month's notice to approximately 50 'suspected citizen' families in Molang near coal-rich Margherita in Tinsukia district recently. Buragohain alleged their akas are Bangladesh-origin Muslims plotting to alter upper Assam's demographics. While 'Miya Muslims' continue to work across upper Assam, leading regional youth organisation Bir Lachit Sena's Shringkhal Chaliha has given a clarion call to remove 'Miyas' from upper Assam. However, Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi claimed BJP-led govt patronage is creating communal tension in upper Assam and urged residents to avoid Hindu-Muslim conflicts instigated by some 'misguided youths'. Gogoi criticised certain regional student and youth groups for allegedly disrupting peace for political advantage before the 2026 elections. A couple of days ago, a group of labourers from Hojai received threats from youth groups with a 24-hour ultimatum to leave upper Assam. An unidentified regional group leader warned, "You Miyas, I give you 24 hours to leave Sivasagar. Within that period, you will have to leave Sivasagar and go to Hojai. This is my last warning. Otherwise, I will turn life miserable for you." The outcome regarding 'Miya' labourers remains unclear. But the incident has caused concern in Sivasagar and adjacent districts. Sivasagar SSP Subhrajyoti Borah responded, "No one will be allowed to take law in their hands. We have taken necessary measures and will go ahead as per law." While multiple organisations are issuing warnings to 'Miyas', authorities indicate these warnings come from various groups collectively. Sources said the the Sivasagar district administration is considering official verification of suspected citizens.

EC suspends 4 officers for doctoring Bengal poll roll
NEW DELHI: Taking serious note of the "wrongful" additions being made to the West Bengal electoral roll by some of its field officers, Election Commission on Tuesday ordered immediate suspension of EROs and assistant EROs of Baruipur Purba assembly constituency (AC) and Moyna AC. It also directed that an FIR be filed against them for "criminal misconduct". In a letter sent to the West Bengal chief secretary on Tuesday, the poll panel said it has "taken serious note of the grave lapses and has decided the officers shall be placed under suspension for their failure in supervising the election related work... and suitable disciplinary proceedings initiated against them without any delay". The action against West Bengal civil service officers and EROs of Baruipur Purba AC and Moyna AC, Debottam Dutta Choudhury and Biplab Sarkar, respectively, and assistant EROs Tathagat Mondal and Sudipta Das, came after the state chief electoral officer (CEO) reported that they had been disposing of applications for inclusion in the electoral roll without proper verification or allowing a window for claims and objections. They also violated the policy of data security by sharing their login credentials for the electoral roll database with unauthorised persons. EC has ordered lodging of an FIR against casual data entry operator Surojit Halder. Significantly, the CEO has reported to EC similar lapses by other West Bengal officials involved in preparation, revision and correction of the electoral roll. Action against these erring officers would follow, said an EC source. The rush on part of certain EROs and AEROs in West Bengal to arbitrarily add names to the state's roll comes even as EC prepares to order special intensive revision of its roll, on the lines of the exercise in Bihar. A source indicated that the hurry to add electors - many suspected to be Bangladeshi settlers - ahead of assembly polls next year may be an effort to ensure their names are on the roll before the enumeration phase of SIR gets underway. As per Section 32(1) of the R P Act, 1950, any ERO or assistant ERO guilty of any act or omission in breach of official duty, shall be punishable with a minimum jail term of three months, which can extend to two years with fine.
