Body found in search of Swiss village buried by glacier debris
Police did not confirm if the remains were of a 64-year-old man who was reported missing in Blatten after it was engulfed by millions of cubic meters of ice, mud and rock.
The village's 300 residents had already been evacuated earlier in May after part of the mountain behind the Birch Glacier began to crumble.
'As part of a coordinated search operation in the Tennmatten area of Blatten, human remains were found and recovered,' Valais Cantonal Police said late on Tuesday.
Formal identification of the remains is now underway, the police said.

German backpacker found alive after 12 days missing in Australian outback
Australian authorities said they found a 26-year-old German backpacker 'safe and well' after she had been missing in a remote part of the country's northwest for almost two weeks. Carolina Wilga, who vanished on June 29 from near the outback town of Beacon, about 254 km (157 miles) north of Western Australia's state capital Perth, was found by a passing motorist on a road in the region on Friday, police said. 'This is a huge relief for her family and all of her loved ones,' Detective Jessica Securo said on Saturday in a media conference televised from Perth. 'To find Carolina safe and well is a fantastic result.' Wilga was airlifted to a Perth hospital, where she was stable on Saturday, authorities said. The backpacker was 'ravaged by mosquitoes' during her time stranded in the hostile terrain and was found exhausted, dehydrated, and with cuts and bruises, police said. A large-scale search was initiated for Wilga after her vehicle was found abandoned in the state's sparsely populated Wheatbelt region, which spans 154,862 square kilometers. Wilga planned to continue her travels in Australia once recovered, authorities said.

Australian police looking for missing German backpacker
Police issued a public appeal for help Thursday in their search for a 26-year-old German woman missing for over a week while backpacking in Western Australia. Carolina Wilga was last seen on June 29 arriving in a Mitsubishi van at a general store in the small agricultural community of Beacon, population 123, which lies northeast of Perth. 'Carolina departed that area about five minutes later and has not been seen or heard from since,' homicide squad detective senior sergeant Katharine Venn told reporters. She had planned to travel through remote Western Australia and also go to the eastern coast, 'so our search area is therefore vast', Venn said. 'At the moment this is a missing persons investigation,' she added. 'There is no indication that there's any third party involvement in her disappearance, but our minds are open to any line of inquiry or any information that people bring forward to us.' Police released photos and video footage of Wilga. She spent two years backpacking the country, and had been working at mine sites in Western Australia, they said.
