One of Canada's most wanted fugitives arrested in Montreal's Trudeau airport
A man who's been on the list of Canada's top 25 most wanted fugitives for murder and drug trafficking charges in Saskatoon dating back to 2022 has been arrested at the airport in Montreal while police say he was returning to Canada. Article content Quebec provincial police say officers from the Surete du Quebec Airport Unit, the Mascouche Major Crime Investigation Division and the Canada Border Services Agency arrested Jonathan Ouellet-Gendron on several Canada-wide warrants at Montreal's Trudeau International Airport on Saturday. Article content Article content A Saskatoon Police Service news release from May 2022 says Ouellet-Gendron, 36, was first sought by police after being identified as a suspect in a homicide that occurred in the 700 Block of Melrose Avenue. Article content Quebec police say Ouellet-Gendron is expected to appear in a Montreal courthouse Sunday. Article content Saskatoon police said in May 2022 they responded to a report of an injured man, followed by multiple reports of shots being fired. Another injured person was reported to have been taken to hospital, police said. Article content When they arrived at 700 Melrose Ave., they said they found 29-year-old Brandon Baxandall dead behind an apartment building. Soon afterwards, police said they were looking to identify two men of slim builds that were seen fleeing the area in dark clothing _ one carrying a bag with a strap. Article content On May 24, 2022, police announced that Ouellet-Gendron was charged with first-degree murder in Baxandall's death. They said he was still at large and warned the public that he was believed to be in possession of a firearm and should not be approached. Article content Article content Last year, Mohamed Abdula Ali was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the case. Article content Article content Late last year Saskatoon police posted an eight-minute video on YouTube about their response and investigation into the homicide. It included dashcam video from a police cruiser arriving at the scene, where a person in the corner of the frame can be seen performing chest compressions on a person on the ground. Article content There's also video of officers with rifles arriving at the scene and more video of officers clearing units in the apartment building. Still photos of handguns are shown, and the video said three firearms were recovered in the hours after the investigation began. Article content

One of Saskatchewan's most wanted fugitives arrested at Trudeau Airport
This is an ongoing story. Check back for updates. One of Saskatchewan and Canada's most wanted criminals was arrested on Saturday at the Montreal Trudeau Airport. Jonathan Ouellet-Gendron, 36, had been wanted by Saskatoon Police since May 2022 as a suspect in a first-degree murder after a running gun battle that took place in a residential neighbourhood in Saskatoon. He was also wanted for other Canada-wide warrants for drug trafficking and other gun-related offences. Ouellet-Gendron was arrested by police from the Sûreté du Québec Airport Unit, who were assisted by the Mascouche Major Crime Investigation Division and the Canada Border Services Agency. The arrest took place as he was returning to Canada. In 2023, Ouellet-Gendron was listed as No. 10 on Canada's Bolo program, which functions as the country's most wanted list.

( AP Photo/Ariel Schalit) LONDON — Police in London braced for another day of demonstrations on Sunday as the war in Gaza continues to inflame tensions across the United Kingdom. Demonstrators demanding the immediate release of all the remaining hostages in Gaza plan to march through central London to the prime minister's residence at No. 10 Downing Street on Sunday afternoon. The march comes a day after police arrested 474 people at a protest in support of a banned pro-Palestinian organization. Among those expected to attend the rally is Noga Guttman, a cousin of 24-year-old hostage Evyatar David, who was featured in a video that enraged Israelis when it was released by Hamas militants last week. The video showed an emaciated David saying he is digging his own grave inside a tunnel in Gaza. Hamas-led militants kidnapped 251 people when they attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Some 50 of the hostages still haven't been released, of whom 20 are thought to be alive. Israel last week announced its intention to occupy Gaza City as part of a plan to end the war and bring the captives home. Family members and many international leaders have condemned the plan, saying it would lead to more bloodshed and endanger the hostages. 'We are united in one clear and urgent demand: the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages,' Stop the Hate, a coalition of groups organizing the march, said in a statement. 'Regardless of our diverse political views, this is not a political issue — it is a human one.' On Saturday, police arrested hundreds of people in central London as demonstrators sought to pressure the government to overturn its decision to ban the group Palestine Action as a terrorist organization. Legislation passed last month makes it a crime to publicly support the group. The Metropolitan Police Service said it arrested 466 people for supporting Palestine Action. A further eight were arrested on other charges, including assaults on police officers. The government banned Palestine Action after activists broke into a Royal Air Force base and damaged two tanker planes to protest British support for the war in Gaza. Palestine Action had previously targeted Israeli defense contractors and other sites in Britain that they believe have links with the Israeli military. Supporters of Palestine Action are challenging the ban in court, saying the government has gone too far in declaring a direct action group a terrorist organization.
