Swiggy expands 10-minute food delivery service 'Bolt' to over 500 cities
Swiggy on Friday said its 10-minute food delivery service 'Bolt', which was launched in October last year, is now operational in more than 500 cities across the country.
Presently, at least one in every 10 food delivery orders delivered by Swiggy are delivered using the 'Bolt' service.
The offering is now available in over 500 cities across India.
Swiggy's scaling up of 'Bolt' comes at a time when its rival Eternal, formerly Zomato, has announced shutting down of the 'Zomato Quick' offering, stating it is not seeing the path to profitability without compromising on customer experience, observing that the current restaurant density and kitchen infrastructure is not set up for delivering orders in 10 minutes, leading to inconsistent customer experience.
Swiggy Food Marketplace CEO Rohit Kapoor said, "Bolt fits into the way people live today. You're hungry, you want something now, and you don't want to compromise. We built Bolt for that moment. Seeing it scale to 500-plus cities in just a few months has been incredible. And this is just the beginning." 'Bolt' focuses on restaurants in a 2-km radius of the customer and dishes with minimal preparation time.

Bengaluru climbs to 14th place in Global Startup Ecosystem Index; tops Indian cities
'This ranking is not just a number; it reflects the structural resilience and readiness of Karnataka's innovation economy.' -- IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge Bengaluru climbed seven spots to reach the 14th place in the Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) 2025, from 21st last year. Among the Indian cities ranked in the report, Bengaluru tops the chart, followed by Delhi in 29th position and Mumbai in 40th. The report, unveiled by innovation ecosystem development consultant Startup Genome at Viva Technology 2025 — an annual technology conference held in Paris — ranks ecosystems based on performance, funding, market reach, talent and experience, knowledge and emerging AI-native strength. Silicon Valley, New York City, and London came in the top three positions. Bengaluru was ranked number 5 among the Top 50 AI cities globally. Maturing ecosystem 'In the last year alone, Bengaluru-Karnataka has evolved from 'rising star' to standing firmly among the titans of the global startup economy,' the report said. It cited a mix of factors such as billion-dollar exits, deep sectoral strength, government-led capital interventions, and one of the richest talent ecosystems in the world as the reason behind the city's strong performance. Among the examples highlighted are Swiggy's public debut with a $12 billion valuation, which was one of the largest IPOs to come out of India, GoDigit's $3.6 billion public listing, Indegene's valuation at $1.3 billion and Blackbuck's $1 billion IPO. 'These success stories weren't anomalies; they were the results of a deep, maturing ecosystem that also saw total ecosystem value reach $136 billion in 2024. Bengaluru-Karnataka also produced 32 unicorns between 2020 and 2024, proving its capacity to consistently scale high-potential startups into global contenders,' read the report. Proactive policies Between 2020 and 2024, $38 billion of VC funding flowed into the region marking strong investor confidence. The report also termed the startup policies of the State as 'decisive' and 'proactive.' The report highlighted how the state government, in its 2025 budget, announced a Fund of Funds initiative and earmarked ₹100 crore for Deep Tech development. 'This ranking is not just a number; it reflects the structural resilience and readiness of the State's innovation economy. Bengaluru has always been a builder's city, and our rise in the GSER shows how our ecosystem's potential is translating into global outcomes,' said IT-BT minister Priyank Kharge, who joined a panel discussion at the event.

LoL.. @zomato @zomatocare — MerryBrains ( Prakhyath Rai) (@prakzrai) June 10, 2025 Responding to the complaint, Zomato's official handle Zomato Care wrote, "Hi Prakhyath, we'd like to get this checked. Please share your registered contact details/order details via DM so that we can look into this." Offering suggestions to fix this reported glitch, the user continued, "Audit the surge logic - specifically the dependency on weather APIs. Introduce fallback validation rules (e.g., if rain data is older than X minutes or not verified, don't trigger a surge). Your rain surge was more than 6 hrs! Check the time of my tweet! Location: Whitefield, Bangalore." Audit the surge logic—specifically the dependency on weather APIs. Location: Whitefield,Bangalore — MerryBrains ( Prakhyath Rai) (@prakzrai) June 12, 2025 For the unversed, a weather API (Application Programming Interface) is a set of protocols and tools that allow for the retrieval of weather data from various sources. In a recent update, Zomato also informed users that Gold members will no longer be exempt from surge fees during rainy weather. An in-app notification message said, "Starting May 16, surge fee waiver during rains will not be part of your Gold benefits." As per reports, Zomato said this extra charge will help the company provide better compensation to delivery partners who work in difficult weather conditions.

Sensex, Nifty tumble 1% on weak global trends
Mumbai: Benchmark Sensex tanked 823 points on Thursday following a selloff in oil & gas, power and capital goods shares in tandem with weak global market trends amid growing tensions in the Middle East. The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 823.16 points or 1 per cent to settle at 81,691.98 with 27 of its constituents declining and three ending higher. During the day, it plunged 991.98 points or 1.20 per cent to 81,523.16. Snapping its six-day winning streak, the broader NSE Nifty tumbled 253.20 points or 1.01 per cent to 24,888.20. Fresh foreign fund outflows also dented investors' sentiment, traders said. Among Sensex stocks, Tata Motors, Titan, Eternal, Power Grid, Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro, Mahindra & Mahindra and Hindustan Unilever were among the biggest laggards. Bajaj Finserv, Asian Paints and Tech Mahindra were the gainers. 'Consolidation in domestic markets is evolving into a broad-based trend, now extending to large-cap stocks. Valuation concerns and rising oil prices -- driven by Middle East tensions -- are fuelling risk aversion among investors. 'Adding to the uncertainty, the US is considering unilateral tariff hikes on several key trading partners, with a decision expected within the next one to two weeks, ahead of an early July deadline,' Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said. The BSE midcap gauge tanked 1.52 per cent and smallcap index dropped 1.38 per cent. Among sectoral indices, power tumbled 2.19 per cent, utilities (2.18 per cent), oil & gas (2.10 per cent), realty (2.07 per cent), consumer durables (2.02 per cent), industrials (1.98 per cent), auto (1.71 per cent), consumer discretionary (1.67 per cent) and metal (1.63 per cent). As many as 2,729 stocks declined while 1,282 advanced and 140 remained unchanged on the BSE. 'The sell-off was triggered by a combination of factors, including renewed geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran, a rise in crude oil prices, and expiry-related pressure following the breakdown of a key support level. These developments have made market participants more cautious,' Ajit Mishra - SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, said. Meanwhile, a London-bound Air India plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed in a residential area minutes after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. Many people were feared killed. Shares of aircraft manufacturer Boeing plunged nearly 8 per cent in pre-market trade on Thursday. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 446.31 crore on Wednesday, according to exchange data. Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd, said investors exited stocks at will weighed down by weak global sentiment coupled with the possibility of Israel attacking Iran and renewed tariff threat by US President Donald Trump'.
