Motors: Eyeing title, Mitchell returns to happy hunting ground in Cork

The decision to concentrate on gravel events is paying dividends for Strabane's Jason Mitchell (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2), who sits atop of the Sligo Pallets Irish Forest Rally Championship leaderboard. Looking forward to his journey to Cork for Sunday's fifth round of the campaign, the Kanturk based J&M Distributors Jim Walsh Cork Forest Rally, he knows that the title race is far from over and he's prepared to measure his title bid to land the Doc Jackson Memorial Trophy. The Rebel county is a happy hunting ground for Mitchell, who won this event 12 months ago and more recently popped the champagne on the Mitchelstown-based Tipperary Forest Rally. "I always like going to Cork. I have competed on that event last year and the year before and I enjoyed it." Switching to a Skoda this year has resulted in a rich vein of form. "I feel very comfortable in the car, which always makes it easier." In terms of the championship (that including Cork, has four rounds remaining) Mitchell admits there's still a lot of driving to be done and he will tailor his approach rather than getting involved in battles with those not registered for the series including fellow Tyrone driver - Omagh's Cathan McCourt (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2), who starts behind him on Sunday. "He (McCourt) is one of the fastest men in the country both on tarmac and gravel and I have to keep a sensible head. If Cathan is going very fast, I have to be sensible and not try and race him and then maybe throw it all away." Mitchell is targeting to build a strong championship lead as he wants to use the bigger restrictor (not eligible for the championship) on the Bushwhacker Rally later in the year. On the switch to the Skoda, he added, "Yes, it's very good on gravel, but so were the Polo GTi R5 and before that the Ford Fiesta Rally2. To be honest, it was more on tarmac that I struggled with the Polo and that was the main reason for switching but the way this championship went - after the few wins, I decided to have a full season on gravel." With maximum points from the three events he's contested, Mitchell is 10 points ahead of Waterford's Andrew Purcell, who is not competing in Sunday's eight-stage event leaving another Tyrone driver Stephen Dickson (Ford Fiesta R5) as his closest rival - twelve points in arrears. However, Mitchell is the only one of the trio to miss one of the previous four rounds. "I coach the Strabane U-14 rugby team and we had a really good season, reaching the final that was on the same weekend as the Moonraker Rally, unfortunately, we lost to Virginia late in the game." Unlike other countries, Mitchell won't have to sweep the loose gravel from the stages as the J1000's and two-wheel drive cars will run ahead, but that's not without its dangers as he explained, "What I have noticed and it almost caught me out on the last two rallies, is the lines they are taking, different lines and they can draw you in and that is something I have to be conscious of on Sunday." Others on the championship trail on Sunday are Clones driver Derek Mackarel, Ballygawley's Vivian Hamill, Cashel's Pat O'Connell and Omagh's Gareth Mimnagh, in variants of the Ford Fiesta. Fivemiletown's Shane McGirr (Lada) is the top seeded two-wheel drive competitor and Bailieborough's Kyle Drury tops the J1000 category. The first of the day's eight stages starts at 9.13am. Meanwhile, Moira's William Creighton and Welsh driver Meirion Evans, both in MEM prepared Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 cars and who share the lead of the Probite British Rally Championship return to the series later today (Friday 6.09pm) on the Voly Grampian Forest Rally near Aberdeen. Creighton said, "The stages can get quite rough in places and a number will only be run once. It'll be important to find a good rhythm with the car and the pacenotes right from the start.' The Ford Fiesta Rally2 duo of Callum Black and reigning FIA Junior WRC champion Romet Jurgenson are only four points in arrears with the latter posing a real threat.

Shamrock Rovers trailing after first leg defeat to Ballkani

Shamrock Rovers will feel they have enough about them to progress to the play-off round of the UEFA Conference League despite trailing 1-0 to Kosovan side FC Ballkani after the first leg of their third round qualifying clash. Sunday Adetunji scored the only goal of this game at the Fadil Vokrri Stadium in Pristina to hand the Kosovans the advantage ahead of the return leg at Tallaght Stadium next Thursday. Premier Division leaders Rovers were nowhere near their best in this one against an outfit who are yet to start their domestic campaign. Stephen Bradley's side struggled to find the higher gears on a frustrating night for the Dublin outfit who will be disappointed with the lack of opportunities created. The Hoops boss made just the one change from last weekend's league win over Derry City. Darragh Nugent came in for Aaron McEneff, while Roberto Lopes' start in defence saw the Cape Verde international become Rovers' record appearance holder in Europe, his 48th turnout in continental competition, one ahead of the previous holder Ronan Finn. Without heavy hitters such as McEneff, Jack Byrne, Graham Burke and Trevor Clarke through injury, the visitors were happy to go in scoreless at half-time in this one. There was an early tactical mix-up from the Kosovans who somehow allowed the unmarked Nugent the freedom of the Hoops' final third. However, Danny Mandroiu's through pass lacked the necessary finesse as his over-hit ball ended up going through to Adnan Golubovic in the Ballkani goal. The Suhareka-based side, who begin their season next weekend, threatened Ed McGinty's goal on several occasions throughout the opening period. Nigerian striker Adetunji was just short of Brazilian wide-man Giovanni's cross on 12 minutes. Adetunji arrived a split-second too late to meet the Sao Paulo native's ball from the left, to the expense of McGinty who Adetunji crashed into in the aftermath. McGinty, thankfully recovered, had to show a strong fist to beat away Geralb Smajli's stinger from 20 yards out on Ballkani's next attack three minutes later. Orges Shehi's charges looked to expose Rovers' right side again on 20 when Almir Kryeziu pulled inside only to pull his resulting shot well wide of the target. The Hoops were struggling somewhat to retain possession inside the opposition half, but were themselves comfortable with what their opponents could throw at them. There was a moment of worry for the travelling support on 34 when a short Ballkani corner ended up with Ardit Deliu. But the Albanian sliced his shot narrowly wide of McGinty's goal from the edge of the 'D'. The former Sligo Rovers stopper had to keep an eye on Kryeziu's mishit cross nine minutes from the interval which sailed over McGinty and beyond his far post. Stephen Bradley's men pulled a first save from Golubovic before the break after the hosts lost Ivica Batarelo to a suspected hamstring pull. The goalkeeper's acrobatics saw him take Josh Honohan's header from a Dylan Watts corner off his own line at full stretch. In what was the first meeting between a Kosovan and an Irish side in European competition, it was Rovers who fashioned the first chance of the second period. However, Mandroiu was unable to sort his feet out in time to guide Honohan's squared ball beyond Golubovic from close range six minutes after the re-start. Rovers were made to regret this on 56 minutes when the hosts hit the front. Adetunji's deft touch to take in Geralb Smajli's assist and send Dan Cleary out of the game bought the striker the space to compose himself before executing a calm finish beyond McGinty. Ballkani, who knocked out Maltese side Floriana in the previous round, should have punished Rovers further before the hour but Kryeziu could only blaze over after McGinty had denied Walid Hamidi's drive from the angle. The busy McGinty then had to use both hands to keep hold of an effort from Kryeziu as the home side looked to double their advantage against a now faltering Hoops. Giovanni flashed a left footer past the post after the Rovers rearguard struggled to get rid of a route one ball forward from the Ballkani back line. Golubovic was again Ballkani's hero in the second minute of added time at the end of this first leg. The Slovenian net minder again denied another Honanhan header, this time from a Watts set piece from the Rovers left. FC Ballkani: Adnan Golubovic; Geralb Smajli, Ivica Batarelo (Bajram Jashanica 39), Gentrit Halili, Arber Potoku (Elvis Letaj 86); Ardit Deliu, Giovanni, Albert Diene; Walid Hamidi (Bleart Tolaj 65), Sunday Adetunji, Almir Kryeziu. Shamrock Rovers: Ed McGinty; Lee Grace, Roberto Lopes, Dan Cleary; Josh Honohan, Danny Grant; Matt Healy, Danny Mandroiu, Darragh Nugent (Connor Malley 60), Dylan Watts; Rory Gaffney (Michael Noonan 60).

'The dog ate my passport': All Blacks rookie Carter sorts pet's mess to recuse debut

Rookie Leroy Carter was still coming to terms with his inclusion in the All Blacks squad to play in Argentina in the opening rounds of the Rugby Championship when he made the shocking discovery. 'The dog ate my passport.' The utility back with the Hamilton-based Chiefs was one of four uncapped players included in Scott Robertson's Championship squad. The phone call from Robertson informing him of his selection had come as a massive surprise. Carter was rushing to get things together for the squad's assembly and departure when he realized the family dog had intercepted his passport. 'I got my passport out to take a photo to send to the (team) manager and I just left it on my bedside table,' Carter said. 'My partner went to the gym and left my dog home alone and it's gone down the hallway, jumped on the bed and just chewed up the passport and my teeth aligners. 'It was a bit of a shambles yesterday. I was trying to get an emergency one but I think it's all (sorted) now. I thought it would happen to me, something like that, so no point getting stressed about it.' The All Blacks squad leaves Friday to play Argentina in Cordoba on August 17 and Buenos Aires a week later in the first two rounds of the Rugby Championship which also includes Australia and South Africa.
