Crown Prince meets Philippines, Cambodia leaders in Kuala Lampur
KUALA LUMPUR: Representing His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah held separate meetings with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr of the Philippines and Prime Minister Dr Hun Manet of Cambodia on the sidelines of the second ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit and the ASEAN-GCC-China summit in Kuala Lumpur
At the start of the meeting with President Marcos, the Crown Prince conveyed greetings from His Highness the Amir to the Philippine leader. Both sides reviewed the bilateral relations between Kuwait and the Philippines, exploring ways to further strengthen and develop cooperation in areas of mutual interest. They also discussed recent regional and international developments.
During the meeting with Prime Minister Hun Manet, the two parties examined the current state of bilateral relations between Kuwait and Cambodia. Discussions focused on supporting and enhancing these relations for the benefit of both countries and their peoples, alongside exchanges on key regional and global issues.
Both meetings were attended by Foreign Minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs at the Crown Prince's Diwan Mazen Issa Al-Issa, Assistant Foreign Minister for the Minister's Office Affairs Ambassador Bader Saleh Al-Tunayan, Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Ambassador Sameeh Johar Hayat, with Kuwait's Ambassador to Malaysia Rashid Mohammed Al-Saleh also present during the Cambodia meeting. — KUNA

Kuwait marks World Humanitarian Day, highlighting the global relief role
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 19: The United Nations marked World Humanitarian Day on Monday, reaffirming its record as a leading provider of humanitarian assistance and international relief over several decades. The UN General Assembly designated August 19 as World Humanitarian Day in memory of 22 people killed in a 2003 bombing at UN headquarters in Baghdad. In 2014, the UN named Kuwait the 'Center for Humanitarian Action' and honored the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as 'Leader of Humanitarian Action' for the country's contributions. Kuwait has placed humanitarian aid at the core of its foreign policy, becoming one of the largest contributors to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) over the past decade. On May 12, 2024, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah reaffirmed this commitment during talks with UN Secretary General António Guterres, who praised Kuwait's leadership in relief efforts. Through the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS), and several charities, Kuwait has dispatched aid across regions struck by conflict and disaster. Recent efforts include participation in the July 2024 Gaza humanitarian conference in Jordan, chaired by Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya, and emergency assistance delivered by KRCS to Yemen after floods. In August 2024, Kuwait launched an air bridge carrying medical and food aid to Sudan, followed by a USD 2.1 million contract with Turkish authorities to ship further supplies. Kuwait continued aid to Sudan with relief shipments and a cooperation deal between KRCS and Sudanese partners. In September, it launched an aid campaign for families displaced by Israeli strikes in Lebanon. A Kuwaiti ship carrying 2,500 tons of supplies reached Port Sudan in October, while the Kuwaiti Society for Humanitarian Work opened a medical complex in Pakistan. Air bridges were established to Lebanon in November 2024 and Syria in December. That month, Kuwait also co-hosted an international conference in Cairo to support Gaza. In early 2025, Kuwait's relief efforts expanded further. These included a USD 1 million grant to UNRWA in Jordan, convoys of aid to Syria from Turkiye, and new development agreements signed by KFAED with the World Food Programme, UNICEF, and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Projects targeted water and education in Gaza and Lebanon, and humanitarian funding for Somalia. KFAED has since broadened partnerships with Japan and the UK to strengthen development cooperation and deliver USD 10 million in emergency aid to Sudan and Somalia. On June 29, 2025, UNHCR signed a grant agreement with the Abdullah Al-Nouri Charity to support Syrian refugees in Jordan.

India's Modi to meet China's top diplomat as Asian powers rebuild ties
NEW DELHI, Aug 19, (AP): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet with China's top diplomat on Tuesday in a sign of easing tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors after a yearslong standoff between the Asian powers. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who arrived in India on Monday, is scheduled to hold talks with Modi and other leaders about the disputed border in the Himalayan mountains. Reducing the number of troops on the border and possibly resuming trade in the contested region are expected to be on the agenda. The rebuilding of ties coincides with friction between New Delhi and Washington after US President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on India, a longtime ally seen as a counterbalance against China's influence in Asia. India is part of the Quad security alliance with the US, along with Australia and Japan. India and China's decades-old border dispute worsened in 2020 after a deadly clash between their troops in the Ladakh region. The chill in relations affected trade, diplomacy and air travel as both sides deployed tens of thousands of security forces in border areas. Some progress has been made since then. Last year, India and China agreed to a pact on border patrols and withdrew additional forces along some border areas. Both countries continue to fortify their border by building roads and rail networks. In recent months, the countries have increased official visits and discussed easing some trade restrictions, movement of citizens and visas for businesspeople. In June, Beijing allowed pilgrims from India to visit holy sites in Tibet. Both sides are working to restore direct flights. Last week, the spokesman for India's foreign ministry, Randhir Jaiswal, said India and China were in discussions to restart trade through three points along their 3,488-kilometer (2,167-mile) border. Manoj Joshi, a fellow at the Observer Research Foundation, a New Delhi-based think tank, said relations are still at an uneasy level of normalization. "Settling the boundary issue between the two countries requires political compromise at the highest political level,' said Joshi, who also served as a member of the advisory board for India's National Security Council. He asserted that the countries are "still talking past each other when it comes to the border dispute and issues surrounding it." Ahead of his meeting with Modi, Wang met India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and discussed the way forward to bolster the relationship. "The setbacks we experienced in the past few years were not in the interest of the people of our two countries. We are heartened to see the stability that is now restored in the borders,' Wang said.

China extends probe into EU dairy products

The Ministry of Commerce said it had prolonged the investigation period to February 21, 2026, citing the case's complexity. Beijing's decision to extend its probe into some EU cheese, milk and cream products comes after it rolled over in June an investigation into European pork, of which it is also a major buyer, and in July announced duties on EU brandy producers - though major cognac makers were spared provided they sell at or above a minimum price. China is seeking a lasting trade truce with the United States and EU to preserve its export engine as it struggles with the prospect of overhauling its economic model, analysts say, with domestic demand still in the doldrums. Trade tensions between China and the EU erupted in 2023 when the European Commission - which oversees the bloc's trade policy - launched an anti-subsidy probe into China-made electric vehicles (EVs), accusing Beijing of flooding the market with state-backed exports. In April this year, a European Commission spokesperson said the EU and China had agreed to look into setting minimum prices of Chinese-made electric vehicles instead of tariffs imposed by the EU last year. The two sides have yet to reach a deal. 'Beijing is still hoping to come to terms with the EU on a long list of trade conflicts,' said Even Rogers Pay, an analyst at Beijing-based Trivium China who specializes in agriculture. 'This investigation - along with the investigation into EU pork, which was extended in June - are significant bargaining chips in the ongoing negotiations around the EU's tariffs on Chinese new energy vehicles,' she said. China originally announced the dairy probe a year ago, a day after Brussels revised duties on Chinese-made electric vehicles but refrained from abandoning them as Beijing had urged. – Reuters
