Former France striker Bernard Lacombe dies aged 72
Former Lyon and Bordeaux striker Bernard Lacombe, who won Euro 1984 with France, died on Tuesday at the age of 72 after a long illness. Lacombe began his career with hometown club Lyon and had a brief spell at Saint-Etienne before joining Bordeaux, scoring 255 goals in total in the French top flight in 497 matches. Only Argentine Delio Onnis (299) has scored more goals in Ligue 1. Lacombe returned to Lyon after his playing career and served as manager between 1996 and 2000. 'It's with immense sadness that we learned of the death of Bernard Lacombe,' the club wrote in a statement. 'Farewell Bernard, you were our legend, the greatest of all.' Lacombe scored 12 goals in 38 appearances for France and started his country's 2-0 win over Spain in the 1984 European Championship final in Paris. Related Topics France / Lyon / Bordeaux

FIFA Club World Cup: Inter held by Mexico's Monterrey; South Africa's Mamelodi make history in near-empty stadium

Ebenhack) NEW DELHI: The opening round of the expanded Club World Cup delivered drama, disappointment, and historic milestones across three key matches. Inter Milan, playing their first match since their Champions League final loss, were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Monterrey at the Rose Bowl in California. Veteran defender Sergio Ramos, making his debut for Monterrey, opened the scoring with a towering header, capitalising on the Mexican side's first corner. Despite dominating possession (62%), Inter equalised only once through Lautaro Martínez, who finished off a slick set-piece move in the 42nd minute. Martínez had a second goal ruled out for offside, while Inter's new manager Cristian Chivu fielded a largely rotated squad from the Champions League final lineup. Inter struggled to find rhythm and still appear to be recovering from their recent 5-0 loss to PSG. In Group F, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa earned a landmark 1-0 win over Ulsan HD of South Korea. Iqraam Rayners scored the only goal, calmly slotting home after a clever setup from Lucas Ribeiro. Rayners had two goals disallowed (one for handball, one offside), but his decisive strike gave Sundowns their first-ever win in any Club World Cup edition. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Despite a delayed kickoff due to a weather warning and sparse attendance, Sundowns impressed with control and flair, while Ulsan missed key chances. Coach Miguel Cardoso praised his team's effort in a hard-fought match. Elsewhere, River Plate began their Group E campaign with a confident 3-1 win over Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds. Facundo Colidio, Sebastian Driussi, and Maximiliano Meza scored for the Argentine giants, while Yusuke Matsuo pulled one back via penalty. Urawa's defensive errors proved costly, particularly a back-pass blunder that gifted River their second goal. Despite a smaller crowd, the atmosphere was lively, with River fans celebrating their team's strong start. All six South American teams remain unbeaten in the tournament so far.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025: River Plate sees off Urawa to make winning start
River Plate opened its Club World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Urawa Red Diamonds on Tuesday, with goals from Facundo Colidio, Sebastian Driussi, and Maxi Meza enough to see off a spirited challenge from the Japanese side. The Argentine team got off to a dominant start and opened the scoring after 12 minutes when Colidio headed home a fine cross from Marcos Acuna on the left. 'We needed to start the tournament like this. We knew we could do it; it was a tough game, like we knew it was going to be,' Colidio told DAZN. 'Today we were very effective, and that's why we won. We knew we had to be intense too and we took our chances.' Urawa went close to equalising before the break, with Marius Hoibraten having a goal ruled out for offside and Takuro Kaneko drawing a sharp save from goalkeeper Franco Armani. Striker Driussi was forced off soon after, having picked up an injury in the build-up, and Urawa pulled one back in the 58th minute through Yusuke Matsuo, who calmly converted a penalty following a foul by Acuna. While Urawa pushed hard for an equaliser, substitute Meza delivered the decisive blow in the 73rd minute, with yet another header from Acuna's corner, his second assist of the match. 'I'm happy with the first game. There were a lot of nerves; it was important to win,' River coach Marcelo Gallardo said. 'They are a physical, fast, and dynamic team; we knew it was going to be like that. The goals gave us peace of mind... we have room for improvement for what's to come.' River will face Mexico's Monterrey on Saturday, while Urawa takes on Champions League runner-up Inter Milan in Group E.
