Police arrest three Chinese women for paying RM8,700 hotel bill with counterfeit cash
Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said the women, 18 to 47, used 87 fake RM100 banknotes to pay a hotel bill of RM8,700.
'During the arrests, police seized 87 fake RM100 banknotes, along with one RM50 and RM20 note each, along with two Lous Vuitton bags, hotel room access cards and three iPhones,' he said in a statement yesterday.
He added that investigation papers have been opened under Section 498B of the Penal Code and the suspects have been remanded for six days till July 9.
He advised the public to be cautious about banknotes and to report any suspected counterfeit banknotes to the police of Bank Negara Malaysia immediately. — Bernama

AGC orders inquest into Zara Qairina's death

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has ordered for an inquest to be held into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir last month. The AGC said it decided to call for an inquest after going through the investigation report submitted by the police following their probe. 'The inquest is aimed at determining the cause and reason of her death, including identifying whether there were criminal elements involved,' it said in a statement. The AGC said the inquest would be held by a coroner's court in an independent and transparent manner, according to provisions of the law. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital the following day. Zara's mother, Noraidah Lamat, filed a police report on Aug 3 after stating that she recalled seeing bruises on parts of her daughter's back during the Islamic funeral washing ritual. On Saturday, the cops exhumed Zara's body to allow for a post-mortem amid allegations of bullying.

MCMC said the statements were taken at its headquarters yesterday. A mobile phone and a SIM card were also seized. 'We will not compromise with any party that mocks or belittles the national anthem, in line with Section 8 of the National Anthem Act 1968, which requires all citizens to show respect for it,' MCMC said in a statement. MCMC did not reveal the identity of the two individuals. However, its probe comes two days after a Malaysian Chinese social media 'influencer' apologised for taking out his phone to record a video as the national anthem was being played at an event. Choo Hao Ren acknowledged that his actions, caught on video in a clip that went viral, were inappropriate and that he should have sung the national anthem solemnly and with respect. Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh nevertheless called for punitive action against Choo for disrespecting the national anthem and the country.

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has recorded a statement from an individual in its investigation into alleged false content circulated on social media in connection with the death of student Zara Qairina Mahathir. MCMC said the person was summoned to the Cheras district police headquarters yesterday, and a mobile phone and SIM card were also seized to assist in its investigation, Bernama reported. 'The content is believed to contain false information touching on 3R (race, religion and royalty) issues, which could cause public confusion and disrupt the authorities' investigation,' it said in a statement. The commission urged the public to allow the investigation process to run its course and to be wary of speculative content that could mislead the public. 'The spread of unverified information not only risks hurting the feelings of the victim's family but also breaches ethical values and may interfere with the course of justice,' it said. Zara, 13, was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17, a day after she was found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of a religious school in Papar at about 4am. Yesterday, the Form One student's grave was exhumed on the orders of the Attorney-General's Chambers, which called for further investigations to ensure every aspect of the case is thoroughly scrutinised.
