Retaining women in workforce key challenge for Malaysia, says World Bank

KUALA LUMPUR : Retaining female employees is a key concern for Malaysia to address in its push to boost women's workforce participation, says a World Bank senior economist.
Shakira Teh Sharifuddin said women's workforce participation in Malaysia is highest between the ages of 15 and 29, indicating that many enter the workforce after finishing school.
However, she said many women leave the workforce in their late 20s or 30s to care for children or elderly family members, and unlike in many countries, few return.
'This is Malaysia's biggest challenge – keeping women in the labour market,' she said at a panel discussion on creating family-friendly workplaces here today.
Fellow panellist Amy Baum, a specialist in women's economic empowerment at UN Women, said workplace culture must evolve to support women.
She also highlighted how an increasing number of companies are offering family-friendly policies like on-site childcare, flexible work hours, and shared parental leave.
TalentCorp chairman Wong Shu Qi said both the public and private sectors must collaborate to build inclusive work environments suited to organisations of different sizes.
She said the economic impact of gender inclusion is clear.
'Increasing women's participation in the labour force could boost Malaysia's GDP by 7% to 12%. This is not just a gender issue, it's an economic one,' she said, adding that inclusive workplaces also drive innovation and improve business performance.
The labour force participation rate for women stood at 56.2% in 2023, according to the statistics department. The LFPR for female graduates in 2023 was higher at 83.2%.
In 2023, women, family and community development minister Nancy Shukri said the government aspired to increase labour participation by women to 59% by 2025.
Earlier, UN Women, LeadWomen, and TalentCorp – supported by Australia's department of foreign affairs and trade – launched the Malaysia Women's Empowerment Principles Corporate Action Lab (WEPsCAL) at a hotel here.
WEPsCAL is a cohort-based programme that helps companies develop gender equality strategies. The first group includes 11 companies from various industries, such as AirAsia Aviation Management Services Sdn Bhd, and QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd.
WEPs, a globally recognised framework, guides businesses in adopting gender-inclusive policies across their operations.

Over 800 foreign nationals approved under Sarawak MM2H since last year

Sarawak's tourism, creative industry and performing arts minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the education sector attracts foreigners to join the SMM2H programme, as their children can study at several international schools in the state. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Sarawak government has approved over 800 applications for the Sarawak Malaysia My Second Home (SMM2H) programme over the past 17 months. Sarawak's tourism, creative industry and performing arts minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah revealed this in the state legislative assembly recently. He said 560 applications were approved last year and another 265 as of mid-May this year, Bernama reported. According to Karim, the economic benefit from these applicants saw funds amounting to RM176.9 million entering the state, in terms of fixed deposits. After having captured the interest of Chinese nationals and Europeans over the period, Karim said the state is now keen on targeting applicants from Japan. He said this was because there has been an increase in the number of tourists coming to Sarawak from Japan. 'It's up to them (the Japanese) to see what Sarawak has to offer, but from what I can observe, especially from applicants from Europe or China, they see Sarawak as a safe place with good medical facilities,' he was quoted as saying at an event in Kuching today. He also cited the education sector as a factor that attracts foreigners to join the SMM2H programme, as their children can study at several international schools in Sarawak.

Ensure fairness, union urges Petronas ahead of job cuts

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Petronas workers' union has urged the company to ensure transparency and fairness as it seeks to reduce its workforce by 10% in a company-wide restructuring exercise. The Sarawak branch of the union said the layoffs would naturally affect the livelihoods of workers, especially those stationed in Bintulu and Miri, as the cost of living is rising in those two areas specifically. 'The oil and gas industry's workforce faces a challenging environment, with long hours, remote deployments, and job instability,' the union said in a statement. 'Concerns about wage inequalities between local and international employees, as well as growing living costs, add to the financial and emotional strain on workers,' it said, according to Dayak Daily. The union said it will seek to protect the rights and welfare of the over 2,000 workers it represents by advocating for reskilling and equitable compensation for affected employees. On Thursday, Petronas president and group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz said the restructuring exercise was aimed at reducing costs due to falling crude prices. He said Petronas expects to reduce its headcount by more than 5,000 people and freeze hiring until December 2026. Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof later said Petronas's restructuring exercise was due to global challenges and was not linked to its dispute with Sarawak's state-owned gas aggregator, Petroleum Sarawak Bhd.

You're looking at the wrong law, Armizan tells Wee in LPG row

Armizan Mohd Ali and Wee Ka Siong have been exchanging verbal blows over a government operation to control the use of subsidised cooking gas. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Domestic trade and cost of living minister Armizan Mohd Ali has accused MCA president Wee Ka Siong of quoting the wrong law as the pair continued to lock horns over rules on subsidised cooking gas cylinders. Armizan said he had clearly stated that his ministry's actions to enforce Op Gasak, to combat illegal decanting and use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, was carried out under the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021. 'However, Wee was referring to the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Act 2021. He definitely wouldn't find the provisions that I'm talking about there,' said Armizan after Wee posted several documents to 'prove' that there was no requirement for businesses to apply for a permit to use more than three LPG cylinders. 'I appeal to all politicians to not confuse the rakyat by making wrong references,' Armizan said in a statement. He also questioned why Wee did not speak up to oppose the amended control of supplies regulations when it was passed in 2021, when Wee, MP for Ayer Hitam, was a minister. On Thursday, Armizan announced that the Cabinet had agreed to allow small businesses to continue to use subsidised gas without requiring a permit until October. The exemption would remain in effect until amendments to the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021 are finalised.
