Dame Helen Mirren has one major rule to keep looking youthful ahead of 80th
The acclaimed actress Dame Helen Mirren says a little bit of adventure is ideal as long as its in moderation
Dame Helen Mirren has revealed her best tip for youngsters to stay looking young - don't smoke and try everything.
The acclaimed actress will turn 80 next month but looks much younger than her advancing years. Asked for advice she said: 'Don't smoke, that's rule number one and do everything but don't do too much of anything. That's a great way of looking at things, because it's important to take care of your health, but you also don't want to live like a nun.'
Dame Helen, who won an Oscar for Elizabeth II one of a number of royals she has played, says she will never get used to being a star and has a lack of ego. She explained: 'It always surprises me when someone comes up to me in a supermarket or an airport and says that they think I'm great, but it's lovely. This sort of thing is fun. It's fabulous. It's fantastic. It doesn't feel right to say that I'm proud of being a role model to people, but it's a great feeling.'
Dame Helen also says she has always been a make up fan and still enjoys spending hours putting it on as one of life's pleasures.
Speaking to Grazia magazine, as part of of her role as a L'Oreal ambassador, she said: 'My idea of a treat is going into a drug store and buying myself another lip liner. I sit at my little desk at home and can spend hours putting my makeup on. It's something I've always loved to do.
'It's not that I don't like trying new products. The innovation is amazing, but it's heartbreaking when you hit on a foundational mascara that you love, the golden chalice, only to find that a few years later that has been discontinued.'
She takes her role so seriously as an ambassador that she even took a box of their hair dye home with her to try out herself before promoting it.
Confirming the rumour she said: 'That's the point of the whole thing, isn't it? I wanted to do it myself, to genuinely be Able to tell people it's a great product, which it is."
Dame Helen also praised a new L'Oreal initiative promoting women in the film industry.
Looking back over her career, which began on stage at The Old Vic playing Cleopatra aged 20, she said: 'When I arrived on the scene as an actress, I'd step onto set and there would be 150 men and three women, almost exclusively, working in the costume and hair and makeup departments.
"Now, when I walk onto a film set, maybe a quarter of the people there are women, and I'm talking about women directors, cinematographers, women in the sound department, in the electrical department. It's moving.
We will next see Dame Helen on screen in Netflix 's film version of the Richard Osman book The Thursday Murder Club, where she is playing retirement village sleuth Elizabeth Best. It is released on August 28.

Dame Helen Mirren sends desperate plea after being targeted by scammers with fak
Dame Helen Mirren has shared a scam with her followers, revealing that her name has been used to dupe people out of money. 'SCAM ALERT!' she began in a post on social media, warning fans not to part with their hard-earned cash. 'Person(s) unknown have used my name to front a false charity, which is sending out messages from me, offering a large sum of money and asking you to respond to helenmirrencharity@ 'THIS IS NOT ME and it is not my email address, please beware and do not respond, this is a scam,' she emphasised. 'The original message came from drogogo91@ and referred to a genuine charity Look For The Stars to claim authenticity. Please keep alert – Many thanks, Helen.' In a bizarre twist, as the legendary actress warns her fans, she herself has been a victim of scams previously. In 2019, the actress told BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, host Jane Garvey that she was conned out of money as she believed she was sending money in return for a mystery prize. The star was on the show to promote her film The Good Liar, which saw her play a rich widow targeted by a conman, played by Ian McKellen. During the conversation, Helen challenged the idea that some people are too savvy to be conned. 'I was scammed. I was so embarrassed about it, and that's the terrible thing, isn't it, when you're scammed, you're so mortified that you really don't tell anyone because it's so embarrassing and humiliating,' she said The MobLand actor revealed that she received a call while she was in the US, telling her she'd won a prize. 'They did it brilliantly, and I was suspicious. They said, 'I've got her I've got her', when I picked up the phone, they said, 'I've got her, I've got her, we're so excited to tell you you've won this prize!' 'I said, 'Have I, how?' The only caveat – why didn't I realise? – was, in order to get the prize, I had to send them money. 'And in return they would send – and they did, it wasn't like I didn't get anything – they sent these things, weird things like a 3D camera, I remember and a fake diamond tennis bracelet, just weird things' She revealed that the jig was up after she later offered to come and meet them. More Trending 'But I was suspicious, and I said, 'Where are you phoning from, the company, where is it based?' ''We're based in New Orleans.' I said, 'Oh what address?' And they gave me an address, and I said, 'Oh that's interesting, because – and it was true – I happen to be coming to New Orleans next week, so I'll pop in and see you.' 'And they sort of went all a bit pear-shaped when I said that.' The legendary star added: 'I was scammed, definitely.' Got a story? Strictly's Helen Skelton says 'never' as she imposed 'strict rule' on Gorka Marquez
Strictly's Helen Skelton says 'never' as she imposed 'strict rule' on Gorka Marquez Former Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton appeared on the BBC show three years ago and made it all the way to the final, but she had a very different approach to her co-stars Helen Skelton and Gorka Marquez came close to winning Strictly in 2022 (Image: BBC ) Helen Skelton revealed she had a specific rule for her Strictly Come Dancing partner Gorka Marquez when they teamed up on the BBC show three years ago, reports Devon Live. At 41, Helen decided to join the dance competition following her public separation from her husband of eight years, Richie Myler, with whom she has three children: Ernie, nine; Louis, eight; and Elsie, four. Despite her busy life as a mother, the dedicated and adventurous Helen is no stranger to embracing significant challenges — including an ultramarathon, cycling to the South Pole, and kayaking 2,010 miles down the Amazon River — all to raise money for charity. When discussing her strategy for tackling daunting tasks, Helen explained that she prefers to stay grounded in the present rather than worry about the future. "I take it one day at a time, and I don't overthink things," Helen divulged. "My motto in life has always been, 'How do you eat an elephant?'" She continued: "You just go little by little, bit by bit. I break it down, and I use that approach with everything." Reflecting on her experience, Helen confided to Bella magazine that her unique approach set her apart from her fellow competitors and possibly aided her during the competition. The presenter shared: "When I did Strictly Come Dancing, my friends would be thinking about what their next dance was, but I never let Gorka talk about the next week. Think about what you need to do today and tomorrow. That'll get you closer to where you'd ultimately like to be." Helen's performances on the dance floor consistently drew acclaim from both the audience and the judging panel, which included Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Anton Du Beke, and Motsi Mabuse. Yet, despite the high praise, Helen and her dance partner Gorka Marquez just missed out on clinching the coveted Glitterball trophy, which was ultimately won by Hamza Yassin and Jowita Przystał. Although she didn't take home the top prize, Helen left the competition with a newfound passion for dance and a rejuvenated spirit after a challenging year, which saw the end of her relationship with Richie in April. At the time, she shared: "Very sad to say that Richie and I are no longer a couple. He has left the family home. We will be doing our best to co-parent our small children." In a heartfelt moment with Gorka on the show, Helen expressed her gratitude: "Strictly have given me so many things already. It's helped me remember who I am and what I am about." Speculation is rife that Helen is now romantically linked with fellow presenter Gethin Jones, although neither party has officially confirmed the rumours.
