Drop in EAPCET takers due to quota changes, availability of exam centres
Hyderabad: Whether due to the abolishment of a 15% quota for non-local candidates or more candidates opting for other exams, the number of candidates appearing for EAPCET this year dropped by about 44,000 compared to 2024.
While 207,190 candidates appeared for the engineering stream this year, last year as many as 240,618 took the test. In the agriculture and pharmacy stream, 81,198 appeared this year, as compared to 91,633 last year."Last year, about 55,000 students from Andhra Pradesh appeared for TG EAPCET. This year, we abolished the quota for non-local candidates, and many from AP gave EAPCET a miss," said V Balakista Reddy, chairman, Telangana Council of Higher Education, on whose behalf EAPCET is conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH).Apart from the abolishment of the quota, experts pointed out that not having exam centres in AP is also a reason for the reduction in the number of applicants. "Generally, we have centres in cities like Vijayawada, which is preferred by AP students. This year, however, there were no centres in AP. This too has resulted in fewer students appearing for EAPCET," said T Srinivas, dean, Kavuri Hills zone, Sri Chaitanya Group.A few also pointed out that many are opting for other exams, as many private universities have emerged lately. "There are many top private universities or deemed institutes that conduct their own entrance examinations. Many are opting for these exams and are mentally prepared to join them. So, they don't see the need to write EAPCET," said M Manzoor Hussain, former registrar, JNTUH.He added that quite a few students and their parents are particular about the course and college, deciding not to write EAPCET as they are either going to take a management seat or study in an engineering college outside Telangana.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He said it can help the education system evolve from a rote learning model to an inquisitive learning one. "Integrating universal human values, as envisioned in NEP 2020, is essential. This integration nurtures inner strength, sound decision-making, and resilience — qualities indispensable in today's complex world," said the governor, while speaking at the 13th convocation ceremony of the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad. Urging students to go beyond passive use of technology, he added: "Innovate, imagine, and build a future that is inclusive and humane. In a world characterised by rapid technological change and AI, it is your creativity, empathy, and ethics that will set you apart." Stating how the university is looking forward to addressing global issues through innovation, JNTU vice-chancellor T Kishen Kumar Reddy said how the university is setting up research hubs in select constituent and affiliated colleges. "These challenges are FEW - Food & Fuel, Energy & Environment, Waste & Water. The research hubs will cater to the challenges faced in these domains," Reddy said. 74 awarded gold medals This year's convocation saw 92,118 students being awarded degrees with 74 securing gold medals across different disciplines including engineering, technology, science, management, humanities, and social sciences. P Surpriya, a BTech civil engineering graduate, received three gold medals. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "I'm over the moon. This achievement is because of my parents' unwavering faith in me. These medals are not just mine — they belong to them and to every girl who dares to dream big. I hope my journey motivates others to chase their ambitions fearlessly," she said. Another heartwarming moment was when 40-year-old Singiah Gali received a PhD for his research in hybrid compost material. Currently working as a robotic process automation engineer, Gali said his biggest cheerleader was his four-year-old daughter. "She was clapping and calling out my name with so much pride when I went up to receive my certificate. I'll never forget that moment. I want to be someone she can look up to, someone who proves that it's never too late to learn, grow, and chase your passion," he said.
