British teenage trio show glimpse of the future on Wimbledon debuts

Independent30-06-2025
Britain's three female teenage wild cards introduced themselves to the Wimbledon crowds with merit despite all exiting the tournament on the opening day.
Mimi Xu, 17, and 16-year-olds Hannah Klugman and Mika Stojsavljevic all showed glimpses of their talent as they exited the senior draw against much higher-ranked players in SW19.
Swansea's Xu had the unenviable task of facing fellow Briton Emma Raducanu, ranked 278 places higher and a natural fan favourite since making her own teenage breakthrough at the tournament four years ago.
Xu garnered plenty support of her own, however, and made her presence felt with an impressive serve that reached speeds approaching 120mph at times.
Raducanu's 6-3 6-3 victory was a job well done in the end, but Xu will surely have many more opportunities to further endear herself to tennis fans in SW19.
She said: 'Obviously it's not my dream debut, my dream debut would have definitely been to have won, but I'm so honored that this is my debut.
'I got to play on an amazing court with an amazing crowd, such a great atmosphere, against an amazing opponent.
'I feel like it's made me believe in myself, believe in my game that it's there, that the good stuff is really there. It's really good, but it's just being able to do it more consistently.
'It's really put belief in me, ignited a fire within me that I can do this, and I belong here.
'I just really wanted it to last a tiny bit longer, but I loved every single moment out there.'
Wimbledon local Klugman faced former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez, ranked 38, on her first experience of the main draw and as the youngest British player at the tournament.
Though losing the first set 6-1 when taking time to find her feet in the sweltering heat, Klugman rallied in the second to give her 22-year-old opponent a little more to think about before an eventual 6-3 loss.
'That was obviously my first main-draw match and against such a tough opponent. It was an amazing occasion and I loved the atmosphere,' she said.
'I tried to enjoy it but it was tough today. Conditions were tough, it was hot.
'I'm disappointed a bit with how I played and also the outcome, there's a lot to learn from it.'
Of the support she received from a home crowd assembled on her own doorstep, Klugman added: 'I didn't think it would be that amazing.
'I think it kind of got to me a little bit at one point, physically and mentally. That's amazing having that many people behind me at such a young age.'
Stojsavljevic made her debut against the American Ashlyn Krueger, losing 6-3 6-2 to the 31st seed.

WTA roundup: Antonia Ruzic pulls off upset in Monterrey

August 20 - Croatia's Antonia Ruzic saved the only break point she faced and dispatched No. 8 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the first round of the Monterrey Open on Tuesday in Mexico. Pavlyuchenkova hit six aces but also helped Ruzic by committing eight double faults. Ruzic's second-round opponent will be Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory over France's Leolia Jeanjean. Alycia Parks needed just 61 minutes to sweep Cristina Bucsa of Spain 6-2, 6-1, advancing to face countrywoman and No. 1 seed Emma Navarro. Not to be outdone, Slovakia's Rebecca Sramkova defeated Mexico's Victoria Rodriguez 6-0, 6-3 in a mere 58 minutes. Three matches were still left to be complete Tuesday night, including Czech No. 6 seed Linda Noskova against New Zealand's Lulu Sun. Tennis in the Land Russia's Anastasia Zakharova reached her first WTA Tour-level semifinal thanks to one win and one withdrawal Tuesday in Cleveland. Zakharova won 23 of 32 first-service points (71.9 percent) as she eliminated No. 8 seed Hailey Baptiste 6-4, 6-3 in their Round of 16 match. Inclement weather Tuesday meant that only one other match was completed, as Germany's Eva Lys beat Russian Polina Kudermetova 6-4, 6-3. However, Lys then withdrew from the event, according to the WTA website, allowing Zakharova to reach the semifinals via walkover. Baptiste's loss continued seeded players' run of misfortune in Cleveland. In the first round alone, the third, fifth, sixth and seventh seeds were shown the door. --Field Level Media

Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula reveal what they REALLY think of new $1m US Open mixed doubles event as pair laugh their way into semifinals

After coasting into the semifinals of the new-look US Open mixed doubles competition on Tuesday, Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula sung the praises of the controversial format - which the British No. 1 now hopes to see at the other Slams. The US Open this year decided to move the mixed doubles competition to qualifying week, crafting a breezy 16-team, no-ad format to court the biggest stars in the sport. And while the format has been branded a 'profound injustice' by defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori - the only doubles specialist pairing included in the field - Draper and Pegula quite like what they've seen so far. 'I think it's great, to be honest. If I wasn't playing the mixed here, I'd be training,' Draper said following victories over Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz and then Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev a round later. 'I actually prefer sort of, like Jessica said, playing on a big court in front of people. It sort of gets your eye in quicker. I think it would be cool if all the Slams did this. That's my opinion. Pegula, who made the final of the 32-team, 2023 US Open mixed doubles competition with Austin Krajicek, is a fan of the format as well. 'It's always fun just to be on Ashe and playing in front of a full crowd. It's been awesome,' she said. 'He's coming back from injury. Taking that into perspective, playing at a high level is really cool. I don't think you can take that for granted. I've loved that aspect of it. 'Anytime you can get out there and get extra reps and compete and win matches, I mean, that's why we play. To me, it doesn't really matter.' The first to two sets of four games format, which also features a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a third set, certainly hasn't been heartily embraced by everyone in the doubles world. Eight of the 16 teams given bids were done so based on their combined singles rankings, while the rest were wild cards - with only one going to a fully doubles specialist pairing in Errani and Vavassori, who have advanced to the semifinals as well. 'Making decisions just following the logic of profit is profoundly wrong in some situations,' the Italians previously said in a joint statement. Even Pegula admitted she 'maybe would like a little bit of a longer format' after two quick wins set up a matchup against Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud on Wednesday night. But at the end of a packed day that saw plenty of big-name casualties, the last-minute pairing of Draper and Pegula were left cracking jokes during their press conference and preparing for a semifinal. The pair were matched after their original partners (Tommy Paul for Pegula, Paula Badosa and later Zheng Qinwen for Draper) pulled out, with Draper estimating that he and Pegula had maybe said 'four' words to each other before this past weekend. 'Tops, max,' Pegula added. 'It's been like, 'Hi.'' But they quickly realized they have plenty in common. 'We're both the same a little bit. I've seen you around before,' Draper continued. 'She's always locked in, got her headphones in. I'm the same. We just don't - I don't think we like people,' he smiled. What ensued between the similarly 'chilled out' (Draper's words) partners was an impressively smooth afternoon, as they avoided any sort of tiebreak in either match, beating Raducanu/Alcaraz 4-2, 4-2 and Andreeva/Medvedev 4-1, 4-1. Draper's power at the net and Pegula's clean hitting proved to be a great blend on Arthur Ashe, and off it, one reporter joked that they were like an 'old married couple' after Pegula playfully chided her partner for calling the competition an 'exhibition.' 'I felt like we would pair really well together,' Pegula said. 'I feel like you're a way better double player than I thought. I didn't know how much you played doubles, but he's like, calling things, and wants to be super aggressive and formations and stuff like that. So that was great, because I feel like, yeah, I wasn't expecting that.' Draper is smartly using the tournament to get some tennis under his belt after missing tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati with a forearm injury. He hadn't been seen on the court since he exited Wimbledon's second round on July 3. 'That period, the last month or so has been amazing for me to get a lot of physical training in and sort of start again with a lot of things,' he said. 'So really, really pumped to play... to have the opportunity to play in mixed doubles - I know it's a bit of fun and 'exhibition', whatever, but I'm enjoying it because I'm actually able to get my eye in a little bit before the tournament starts.' It was only last weekend that both Draper and Pegula were scrambling for partners. By the end of Tuesday? Pegula was gushing on the court about the 'best doubles player' she'd ever played with, while Draper - through another joke, eventually got to the same praise as well. 'Everyone was pulling out on me. I was just taking anything at that point,' he laughed. 'But I got lucky. I got lucky, for sure.'

Vauxhall's new all-electric 800hp sports available for test drive in Gran Turismo 7

British brand Vauxhall is taking its all-electric GSE performance sub-brand to a new level, revealing the radical Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo – a fully electric concept car boasting 800hp, a 0-62mph time of just two seconds and a top speed of 199mph. The car, which premieres at the IAA Mobility show in Munich on 8 September, will also have a digital debut in PS5 racing sim Gran Turismo 7 this autumn, in what Vauxhall boldly calls a 'phygital' launch. 'The Vauxhall Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo takes the GSE sub-brand to the next level,' said Steve Catlin, managing director at Vauxhall. 'It not only shows what is possible on a small car platform, it also displays a clear view to the future.' At the core of the concept is a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive electric powertrain delivering a combined 800hp and 800Nm of torque. A boost function provides an additional 80hp for up to four seconds to aid overtaking on track. Vauxhall had hinted that the concept has an eye on racing, saying it 'will be very much at home on the racing track and offer a thrilling yet comfortable and safe driving experience'. The concept was created by Vauxhall's design team at the Opel headquarters in Germany, led by Brit Mark Adams, Vauxhall and Opel's Vice-President of Design. Adams has been heading up Vauxhall design for over two decades, and his team was also responsible for Vauxhall/Opel's last show car, the Vauxhall Experimental, which appeared at the Munich Motor Show in 2023. While that car was purely a concept previewing the latest design themes across Vauxhall's model range, this latest concept is taking that on further and could preview a production GSE model that we see sometime in 2026.
