Eau Claire City Council deciding on whether or not to accept fireworks donation

Yahoo28-02-2025

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Eau Claire City Council is debating whether to accept a donation for the city's annual fireworks show. The council failed to pass an agenda item regarding a donation from Festival Foods to sponsor the July 4th fireworks for the next 3 years.
Some council members say the display has caused concerns for residents, citing military veterans with PTSD, distressed pets, as well as air pollution. Meanwhile, others say it's a beloved annual tradition. Although he voted against Tuesday's resolution, Council Member Joshua Miller filed a motion to bring it back around next month. Miller explains, 'In no way is this saying there won't be fireworks this year, it's just that for a technicality it didn't pass at the meeting this week, and we're going to bring it back in March and re-examine it.'
5 council members were for the resolution, and 4 against. 6 'yes' votes were needed for it to pass.

City council approves funding for rental inspection pilot program

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- An amendment was made at city council Monday night that shifts the money that would be used to renovate the lobby of Busch Building for a new program. This program would provide rental inspections across the city. 'We need a rental licensing and inspection program because everybody deserves a healthy home and not all rentals in Springfield are healthy or safe right now,' said Sarah Barnts, the tenant union network organizer for Springfield Tenants Unite. Council Bill 2025-108 originally gave over $400,000 to renovate the Busch Building. 'It seems as though the budget we have before us is prioritizing the aesthetic need over the functional need,' said Councilman Brandon Jenson. Jenson presented an amendment to that bill at Monday night's council meeting. 'I move that Council Bill 2025-108 be amended by deleting $458,342 from the Busch Municipal Building first floor renovation project and adding $458,342 to reserves for potential use in a rental inspection program,' Jenson proposed. Mayor Jeff Schrag was the only one who voted against the amendment. When it came time to pass the full bill, it passed unanimously. 'We know that there's an affordable housing shortage,' Barnts said. 'And so we need to preserve the current stock, that we have to stop us from losing even more.' Barnts says she goes door-to-door canvassing and has met several people who struggle with faulty electric and mold. 'We want the city to enforce the law,' Barnts said. 'Healthy homes, habitable conditions are the law and there's not an enforcement mechanism for that right now.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Musk favorability among Republicans drops after Trump feud: Poll

Tech billionaire Elon Musk saw his favorability drop sharply among Republicans in the aftermath of his public feud with President Trump, according to the latest YouGov/Economist poll. In the survey — conducted in the days after the drama unfolded between two of the world's most powerful men — Musk's net favorability among Republicans fell to 39 percent, with 67 percent favorable and 28 percent unfavorable. That represents a dramatic drop from the net 59 percent favorability rating Musk saw the previous week, when 76 percent of Republicans held a favorable view and 18 percent held an unfavorable view of Musk. Musk's favorability declined across virtually all political groups. Overall, his net favorability dropped this week to negative 23 percent — 35 percent favorable, 58 percent unfavorable — down from a net favorability of negative 9 percent the previous week — 42 percent favorable, 51 percent unfavorable. Among Democrats, Musk's net favorability dropped to net negative 77 percent — 10 percent favorable, 87 percent unfavorable — down from last week's already dismal net negative 65 percent — 15 percent favorable, 80 percent unfavorable. Even independents soured this week on Musk, whose favorability among that group dropped to net negative 32 percent — 27 percent favorable, 59 percent unfavorable — down from the previous week's net negative 22 percent — 34 percent favorable, 56 percent unfavorable. The poll also asked respondents whose side they would pick in the feud between Trump and Musk. The vast majority of Republicans picked Trump, 74 percent, while only 6 percent chose Musk. Another 13 percent said neither and 7 percent said they're not sure. The majority of Democrats and independents say they would side with neither Trump nor Musk. The poll, conducted June 6-9, included 1,533 U.S. adults and a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
