Bengal's date with kingfisher: Third Sunday every July

Time of India19-07-2025
Kolkata: Every year, third July Sunday will be celebrated as the 'Kingfisher Day' in Bengal.
Starting today, the third Sunday of every July will also see Bengal birders undertaking a survey to know status and distribution of kingfishers in Bengal.
The decision was taken during the Bengal Birders' Meet on Sunday.
While white-throated kingfisher is the state bird of Bengal, the state is also home to 11 more species of kingfisher.
"The Birdwatchers' Society (BWS) is proud to propose that beginning this year, the week starting from the third Sunday will be observed as 'Kingfisher Census Week' across Bengal. This will focus on documenting the distribution and diversity of kingfishers," said Sujan Chatterjee of BWS.

"With the white-breasted kingfisher as the state bird of Bengal, it makes perfect sense to dedicate this day of July — when the species is at the peak of its breeding season — to this bird," added Kanad Baidya of the organisation.
"Kingfishers are critical indicators of freshwater ecosystem health. Species that rely on muddy ponds and riverbanks are uniquely adapted, yet they face mounting threats from habitat loss and degradation.

Targeted conservation efforts are essential to secure their future," said Shuvendu Das, ecologist and BWS member.
Bengal holds the unique distinction of having recorded all 12 species of kingfishers found in India — an ecological honour that makes this initiative all the more significant, said a birder. "As awareness grows, we envision Kingfisher Day evolving into a national movement," added Chatterjee.
The Birdwatchers' Society, in association with eBird and Bird Count India kicked off two-day Bengal Birders' Meet 2025 on Saturday. This year, the meet is being held with over 350 participants. Among speakers are eminent conservationist and ornithologist Asad Rahmani, wildlife ecologist Aparajita Datta, Sundarbans Tiger Reserve deputy field director Justine Jones, DFO Malda Jiju Jasper, Ashwin Viswanathan of Nature Conservation Foundation, Major BS Parihar and IFS Milan Mandal.
Conservation biologist Yong Ding Li joined online.

‘A sign from Shiva?': Snake sits on Shivling in temple, leaves crowd spellbound-- Watch video

In the middle of Sawan, when temples across the country stay busy with prayers and rituals, something unusual happened at a Shiva temple in Chhattisgarh– and it had nothing to do with any special event or ceremony. At the Narmadeshwar Mahadev Temple, a snake was spotted sitting coiled on the Shivling, surprising those present. The moment wasn't planned, but it quietly caught everyone's attention and has since become a talking point online. Snake charmer's rest stop turns into an unexpected scene According to a report by India Today, it all started when a snake charmer, passing through the temple area, paused to rest for a bit. A few devotees nearby, curious about the snakes he was carrying, asked him if they could see them. He opened his basket, and before anyone could react, one of the snakes slipped out, headed straight inside the sanctum, and climbed onto the Shivling. Watch the video here: For 20 minutes, all eyes are on the Shivling As per the report, the snake stayed there for nearly 20 minutes, wrapped around the Shivling. As people got wind of what had happened, more visitors started turning up. Some called it a spiritual moment, especially since it happened during Sawan, while others kept their distance, unsure of how to react. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo Despite the growing crowd, everything at the temple went on as usual– there was no disruption in the ongoing pujas. Handled calmly, without any panic Eventually, the snake charmer stepped in and gently removed the snake from the Shivling. It was placed back in the basket without causing any panic, according to the report. The crowd stayed calm, and no one was harmed. Temple staff and devotees maintained a peaceful atmosphere throughout. Temple confirms rituals went on without interruption Even with more people showing up after the incident, the temple priests made sure that the daily prayers went on without any problem. The regular Sawan puja continued smoothly, and nothing was disrupted. Some called it a sign, others just watched in awe In Hindu belief, snakes– especially cobras– are considered sacred and are closely connected to Lord Shiva. So when a real snake was seen sitting on the Shivling during Sawan, many felt it wasn't just a random moment. For those who witnessed it, the sight gave them chills– it felt special, almost like a sign.
