2 teens shot near Stonewall Inn after NYC Pride march, police say
The incident occurred in Sheridan Square in Greenwich Village just after 10 p.m., in the vicinity of the Stonewall Inn — the historic LGBTQ bar.
A 16-year-old girl sustained a gunshot wound to the head and is in critical condition, while a 17-year-old girl is in stable condition after being shot in the leg, an NYPD spokesperson said. Both were transported to local hospitals.
The NYPD spokesperson said it is too early to know if the incident was hate crime-related and said the investigation is ongoing. No suspect has been identified.
New York Mayor Eric Adams said he was 'saddened' to learn about the shooting.
'During a time when our city should be rejoicing and celebrating members of our diverse LGBTQ+ community, incidents like this are devastating,' he said on X.
The Stonewall Inn was set to host events to celebrate NYC Pride. The bar did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Christopher Street Project, a hybrid PAC and nonprofit organization advocating for transgender rights, said in a statement that it mourned the act of violence.
'Tonight, we are holding the victims of the shooting outside the Stonewall Inn and their families in our hearts,' it read.
One bystander, Vivian Lewis, told NBC New York that she was 'heartbroken' after learning of the shooting when she saw police drones and ambulances.
"I saw medical workers scrummaging. I got sympathy adrenaline from watching that," she said.
The shooting happened after the the pride march on Sunday, which is among the world's largest LGBTQ demonstrations.

Alleged moped thieves terrorize riders in Queens, police say
QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) — A trio of alleged moped thieves has been terrorizing riders in Queens for the past few months, police said Tuesday. The suspects have allegedly threatened riders with a knife before taking their mopeds in a spate of incidents from June to August, according to the NYPD. The spree started when a 27-year-old man riding a moped was hit in the head with a chain and robbed at knifepoint on 107th Street at around 11:30 p.m. on June 30, police said. EMS staff treated the victim at the scene for minor injuries. The trio struck twice on Aug. 7 when they ambushed moped riders on Linden Boulevard and then again on 103rd Street and Rockway Boulevard. The suspects allegedly took the victims' keys and rode off on the stolen mopeds, police said. The men allegedly stole two more mopeds on July 20 near 101st Street and Drew Avenue and 122nd Street and Liberty Avenue, cops said. There were no injuries in the July and August incidents. Police are still searching for the suspects. The wife of a slain New York City Police Department officer killed in a mass shooting at a Manhattan high-rise last month gave birth to the couple's third child this week, the agency announced. 'Out of tragedy, a new life has entered this world,' NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch wrote in a Monday, Aug. 18 post on X. 'Last night, Jamila Islam, the wife of Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, gave birth to their beautiful son, Arham.' A nearly four-year NYPD veteran, Islam was killed in a mass shooting on July 28, in a skyscraper where he was working a paid security detail. At the time of his death, in a statement on the precinct's social media, city leaders called Islam 'a husband, father, and dedicated public servant' and said he was survived by two young sons and his wife, who had been expecting the couple's third child. In the commissioner's birth announcement on Monday, she wrote the newborn boy joins two big brothers, Ahyan and Azhaan. Widow of police officer killed in New York mass shooting gives birth to 3rd child
The widow of the off-duty police officer who was killed in a mass shooting last month in New York City's Midtown Manhattan gave birth to the couple's third child on Sunday. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch shared the news in an X post Monday, writing, "Out of tragedy, a new life has entered this world. Didarul Islam, 36, was one of four people killed in the mass shooting that unfolded at 345 Park Avenue on July 28 in the office building's lobby and upper floors. The building is home to the headquarters of the NFL, the offices of private equity company Blackstone, real estate firm Rudin Management and other companies. Islam was off duty at the time and working a security job when he was fatally shot. The alleged shooter, Shane Tamura, fired 47 rounds with an M4-style rifle, according to the NYPD. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said previously that Tamura appeared to be targeting the NFL headquarters. NYPD investigators stated last month that they were working to determine a motive behind the shooting, but said Tamura left a note claiming he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a brain disease marked by repeated blows to the head and often linked to military veterans and athletes, like football players. In addition to Didarul Islam, three others -- Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, security guard Aland Etienne, and Rudin Management employee Julia Hyman -- were killed in the mass shooting.
