Dolphins finalizing deal with Jets S Ashtyn Davis, per report
The Miami Dolphins are finalizing a deal with New York Jets safety Ashtyn Davis, according to Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports. Terms of the agreed upon contract haven't yet been revealed.
Davis, 28, was a third-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft and spent much of his five seasons with the Jets as a backup who contributed on special teams. In 69 career games in New York, Davis started 22 and finished his time with the team with eight interceptions, three forced fumbles, and nine tackles for loss.
Despite his limited time in the starting lineup, Davis emerged as a reliable defensive back for the Jets in the last two seasons -- finishing both years with a PFF grade above 71. He was especially effective in coverage during the 2023 season when he held quarterbacks to a 32.0 passer rating when targeted.
In what proved to be his last game with the Jets, Davis twice intercepted Dolphins quarterback Tyler Huntley.
In Miami, Davis should compete for the full-time starting role that eluded him in New York. While the team is also set to sign Detroit Lions safety Ifeatu Melifonwu on a one-year, $4 million deal and bring back safety and special teamer Elijah Campbell, the only other player at the position is 2024 sixth-round pick Patrick McMorris.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Wednesday that they were releasing wide receiver Gabe Davis, and on Thursday afternoon, that move became official. Davis was waived with failed physical and post-June 1st designations, according to Aaron Wilson. As it pertains to the post-June 1st designations, that does come with some noteworthy salary cap ramifications for both 2025 and 2026. Advertisement Last offseason, Davis signed a three-year, $39 million deal with $24 million guaranteed. By releasing Davis at this point, the Jaguars are taking on a hefty amount of dead cap--which are dollars that have been paid to the player but not yet accounted for on the salary cap--of $20.3 million. The decision that the Jaguars had was to either absorb that full $20.3 million in dead cap on the 2025 salary cap, but be out from under Davis' deal in 2026, or use the post-June 1st designation to spread the dead cap hit out. By choosing the latter, Davis will leave behind a dead cap hit of $5.7 million in 2025, but also a $14.6 million dead cap hit in 2026, according to Over the Cap. So even though Davis will be playing elsewhere, he will still be on the Jaguars' salary cap books for each of those amounts over the next two seasons. Jalen Ramsey skipping start of Dolphins minicamp with trade talks simmering
Jalen Ramsey will not be at the Dolphins' minicamp when it opens this week as the two sides continue to search for a trade for the cornerback. The player and team mutually agreed to part ways back in April, but so far, a trade hasn't materialized and it has led to Ramsey opting not to attend mandatory minicamp this week, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday. It would appear that both sides are ready to move on from each other as the organization begins to prepare for the 2025 season. Ramsey did see a dip in his play last season when he missed the Pro Bowl for the first time since 2016. He had 60 tackles, a sack, two interceptions and 11 passes defended.
