Quantum computing is still in its infancy, but researchers have high hopes

While AI has been getting most of the attention as a world-changing technology lately, there's another technology on the horizon that has the potential to reshape the world: quantum computing.
Explaining what quantum computing is and what it will do is complicated because to really understand it, you need to understand both how classic, or binary, computing works and what its limits are. Quantum physicist Shohini Ghose made this analogy: If binary computing is a candle, quantum computing is an electric light bulb; you can make the highest quality candle in the world, and it won't ever be able to do what a light bulb does.
'Quantum computing runs on linear algebra, just like quantum mechanics runs on linear algebra,' said Gushu Li of QUIEST — The Penn Center for Quantum Information, Engineering, Science and Technology — during his talk on quantum computing at the 2025 Technical.ly Developers Conference last week. 'In contrast, classical computing runs on Boolean algebra.'
In the most simple terms, quantum computing is computing in multiple dimensions instead of being two dimensional. It's unimaginably fast — think about how quickly ChatGPT can create a spreadsheet and imagine the power generative AI will have combined with a technology that can solve a calculation in five minutes that would take a supercomputer of today literally millions of years to resolve. The science is so huge and hard to grasp that quantum mechanics has been cited in real-life scientific theory of multiple timelines.
The reality, Li said, is that while we won't be using quantum laptops any time soon, quantum computing will likely make breakthroughs in the not-so-distant future.
Some of those breakthroughs may be in:
Medicine, as quantum computers help design new drugs faster
Materials, leading to better batteries or superconductors
Security, as today's encryption methods become obsolete

Quantum computing is rooted in the laws of physics, not classical logic
While classical computers rely on Boolean logic and binary bits (0s and 1s), quantum computing leverages the principles of quantum mechanics, particularly superposition and entanglement, to process information using qubits — a unit of quantum information that is the equivalent of a binary bit.
Unlike classical bits, Li said, qubits can exist in multiple states simultaneously, creating a vast computational space.
The rise of quantum computing marks the second quantum revolution
The first quantum revolution in the early 20th century led to technologies like the transistor and integrated circuits, foundational to today's electronics.
The second revolution, Li said, focuses on using quantum mechanics directly for computation, opening new possibilities in algorithm design and computational power.
Shor's algorithm sparked major interest in quantum potential
In 1994, MIT professor Peter Shor introduced an algorithm that could factor large numbers exponentially faster than classical algorithms. Li said this posed a serious challenge to encryption of the time and demonstrated a use case, spurring investment and interest in quantum computing.
Hardware and ecosystem development are rapid but fragmented
Multiple quantum technologies are being explored, including superconducting circuits, ion traps (used in television technology) and photonic systems (light manipulation technology), with both startups and big tech companies like IBM, Google and Intel contributing to hardware development.
Li said that IBM's release of a cloud-accessible quantum chip in 2016 was a pivotal moment, democratizing access to quantum hardware.
The quantum software stack and workflow are still in their infancy
Programming a quantum computer involves expressing algorithms as quantum circuits — a visual, linear algebra-based representation, Li said.
New tools are required for programming, compiling, and interpreting quantum computing results.
Unlike classical systems, reading or measuring, a qubit alters its state, making quantum computing inherently non-intuitive.
'Different technologies are trying to build better quantum devices,' Li said. 'Many companies are joining this field, and if you look at their roadmaps, they usually claim that by the end of 2030, they are expecting something around 1 million qubits.'

Having a lawyer to call is essential for founders, and they shouldn't wait until legal problems arise to establish that relationship. That theme underscored much of the 'Legal Trouble: Avoiding Common Startup Pitfalls' panel at the 2025 Builders Conference. Moderated by startup attorney Jeffrey Bodle of Morgan Lewis, the panel featured cautionary tales and practical advice from Baltimore-area founders Matthew Hayes and Shari Bailey of Unmanned Propulsion Development and Laila's Gift, respectively. 'Think of building a business like building a home,' Bailey said. 'If you skip inspections until the end, you might have to tear out the foundation. Do things right and tight up front.' Both founders stressed the long-term costs of early legal shortcuts. Hayes recounted how, in the absence of experienced startup attorneys in the rural Maryland area where he used to work, he leaned on a family member who practiced real estate law. It didn't go well because they didn't focus on startup law. 'On the business side, specialists help; generalists don't,' he said. Bailey agreed, especially for anyone navigating both for-profit and nonprofit structures, as she does. Laila's Gift throws birthday parties for children with special needs while also developing a tech product to support the same community. Her guiding principle? Document everything. She referenced a GMP (good manufacturing process) term, 'document control,' that she believes transcends any industry. 'Keep records of everything, with revision control,' she said. 'Meeting minutes, decisions, training — store them in a central repository everyone can access so the history doesn't live in one person's head.' Match your legal partner to your growth trajectory Even if they're not ready to retain a lawyer, entrepreneurs have options for services and platforms that can provide some guidance, even if they don't replace the expertise of a skilled attorney. 'If you have funding, hire an attorney,' Bailey said. 'If not, services like Rocket Lawyer can help … volunteers can help nonprofits; ChatGPT is a great starter — not a finisher.' Hayes said much of his early legal documentation was taken from other firms' NDAs. 'All my NDAs were basically copied from other companies, nobody's going to sue over that,' he said. Plus, if you want legal protection that scales with your business, be sure to think long-term. 'You don't necessarily have to pick one firm forever,' Morgan Lewis' Bodle said, 'but if you expect to grow like a weed, choose a firm that can scale. Businesses evolve. Keep a few candidates in mind and revisit as you grow.' Attorneys in the audience added practical tips: avoid hourly billing in favor of modest retainers plus success fees; keep documentation simple but tight; and vet your lawyer as thoroughly as you would a cofounder. Bodle urged founders to use tools like AngelList's Stripe Atlas, Clerky or Gust for standard startup documents, and to approach legal work incrementally. 'Term sheets also keep costs low: Until you agree on key terms, nobody wastes time drafting the rest,' he said. The panel closed with a reminder from Hayes that even in the face of adversity, founders can still shape their outcomes. During the pandemic, he co-founded a nonprofit — Southern Maryland Loves You — and worked with local volunteers to create an FDA-authorized mask-sanitizing system that hospitals clamored to use. But it was 'messy,' per Hayes. His congressional representative allegedly leaked his FDA support letter to a competitor's lobbyist, so he quickly learned to operate more discreetly. Key lessons from that experience? 'Have a lawyer you can call; keep communication open; be someone people don't want to sue,' Hayes said, 'and don't work with people who sue.'

Building your first AI assistant doesn't require a CS degree. All you need is a laptop and a few good prompts. That was the takeaway from the 'AI Tools Basics' workshop at the 2025 Builders Conference, where Jason Michael Perry of PerryLabs and the University of Pennsylvania's Jeremy Gatens led a hands-on session showing how to turn generative AI from a novelty into a practical productivity partner. 'Today's AI is the worst AI you're ever going to use,' Perry said, noting that the technology is evolving quickly. Perry walked the classroom-sized crowd through how to customize ChatGPT by using what's known as agentic AI. Giving the model more detail about yourself yields dramatically more relevant, useful and human-like results. As he demonstrated, agentic AI can not only generate text but also act as a sounding board, content strategist, and even campaign composer. It's a reminder that the key to AI is not just what you ask, but also what the system knows about you when you ask it. 'I can tell it if I have kids, where I live, my neighborhood, and by giving it this information, ChatGPT starts to get context,' Perry said. 'It starts to become a little bit more aware of who I am.' That setup paves the way for a suite of other generative tools, Perry demonstrated. He created a campaign-ready song using Suno, an AI-powered music generator, and built a competitive media plan using Perplexity's research capabilities. AI is for builders, not just technologists Gatens, who heads IT for Penn's Division of Human Resources, focused on how to apply the same logic to building applications using a generative AI platform designed to transform written requirements into working prototypes. He emphasized the importance of thoughtful preparation: feeding an AI builder better inputs leads to better outputs. Gatens also shared a prompt-building workflow rooted in the RACE framework (Role, Action, Context, Expected outcome), moving ideas from vague to actionable in just a few steps, with the help of generative AI tools Claude and Gemini. This process makes products like Loveable not only more effective but also more accessible to non-developers, he said. 'We could start with Loveable — we could have done all this in Loveable,' Gatens said. 'But by refining the idea with good technical requirements, it gives you a better chance to be successful.' For all the technical details, the session's bigger message was about redefining the relationship between people and machines. Perry described his AI assistants like creative colleagues — with personalities, perspectives, and specific jobs to do. How we got here and what's next This year's Builders Conference leaned into the practical applications of AI, and the 'AI Tools Basics' session was one of the clearest examples. Perry, a longtime technologist and CTO, has built a reputation for demystifying AI through accessible frameworks and real-world use cases. Gatens brings a user-focused perspective rooted in public-sector IT and workforce development. Both emphasized the importance of play and experimentation. The session was lively, filled with audience interaction, live demos and even original music. The point wasn't just to teach tools, but to spark ideas. Both presenters fielded questions about AI's role in education, the future of AGI (artificial general intelligence) and the need for workplace readiness. Perry warned that most organizations aren't structurally ready to take full advantage of AI, with legacy systems and data silos creating major hurdles. But he also framed it as an opportunity. 'I always like to remind folks that we are in the AOL days of AI,' he said. 'That's how early this is.' That accessibility and sense of possibility seemed to resonate with the crowd. As the session ended, attendees clustered around Perry and Gatens, eager for links, prompts and follow-ups. 'It's not crazy to think that we're going to have ChatGPT-style AI and robots roaming the world in households under $20,000 within the next two to three years,' Perry said. 'We're about to see much more transformation in ways that we may not be expecting, quicker than we expect.'

Artificial intelligence may not replace human founders anytime soon. Instead, with the right tools, AI can be a founder's best friend. That was the message from the 'AI Tools for Entrepreneurs and Early-Stage Teams' panel at the 2025 Builders Conference. Moderated by Intake Media founder (and former editor) Stephen Babcock, the panel featured Laneisha Roberts, cofounder of the Atlanta-based performance evaluation platform ReviewTailor, and Ashwin Jaiprakash, founder of the DC-headquartered go-to-market intelligence company Eazy. The speakers shared how they're already leveraging AI in their startups — and what kinds of tools they wish existed to help founders like them, and the others in the room, juggle the endless demands of building something new from scratch. 'We're learning to use these tools still,' Babcock said. 'We're the early users today.' Roberts, who previously spent 15 years in government, healthcare and corporate leadership, started ReviewTailor to solve a specific pain point: performance reviews that eat up time, perpetuate bias and rarely reflect employees' real contributions. She recalled one manager who flagged emails, had Word docs and relied on memory to write reviews. That discovery, she said, made it clear AI had the potential to streamline the process. Jaiprakash, whose background includes years in enterprise tech consulting, founded Eazy to support IT services firms as they assist clients in modernizing their data infrastructure. By using AI to analyze patterns in sales and client needs, Eazy helps reduce the failure rate of digital transformation projects — an issue Jaiprakash said affects 70% of large-scale efforts. 'If you can improve people's experience in the way that they interact with other people, and AI is just the mechanism to do that, let's do that,' Jaiprakash said. Founder favorites: Tactical AI tools and wishes for the future Beyond their own products, the panelists also shared their go-to tools and hacks for using AI in their everyday work: ChatGPT remains a daily go-to for Roberts, who uses it for everything from analyzing survey results to drafting content. 'ChatGPT is my employee of the week every week,' she joked. OpusClip was a crowd favorite. This tool breaks down long videos into bite-sized clips and ranks them by their potential virality for social media. Roberts said the free version makes 20-30 clips from a 45-minute video. Supademo helps Roberts create interactive onboarding and demo videos tailored to the employee's role. Magic Patterns, recommended by Jaiprakash, auto-generates UI interfaces and design elements, helping teams create faster mockups or chat-based interfaces without needing a designer. AskHumans, a voice-based survey tool, allows founders to send personalized questions and receive spoken feedback. 'We found that when people speak, you capture 35% or 40% more context,' Jaiprakash said, adding that this richer feedback is vital for effective discovery. Asked what AI tool they wished existed, the panelists had no shortage of ideas. Roberts proposed a 'cofounder whisperer' — an AI that could monitor team communication and flag early signs of burnout or interpersonal tension. 'I don't know if there's any investors in the room, but that would also be valuable for investing in early-stage startups, where those issues tend to surface up,' she said. Jaiprakash dreamed of a tool that scans a founder's network and proactively recommends who to contact for help solving a specific problem. He imagined an AI that would tell him the people he should be reaching out to, 'and schedule a call for me with them tomorrow.' Panelists agreed that the real promise of AI lies in speeding up feedback loops and decision-making, not skipping foundational work. 'You need to know to the very minuscule level what the manual process is,' Jaiprakash said, adding: 'I don't think you can build something effectively if you haven't gone through the pain of doing that manual work.'
