Maharashtra to establish ‘Tourism Security Force' at popular destinations
Following the Pahalgam terror attack, the Maharashtra government has established a 'Tourism Security Force (Paryatan Mitra)' to boost tourism and prioritise tourist safety in the State. Tourism Minister Shambhuraj Desai said he aims to provide tourists a safe and secure experience through this initiative.
The Maharashtra Tourism Security Force will be started on a pilot basis during the Mahabaleshwar festival in Satara district, which will be held from May 1 to May 4.
The Tourism Department will appoint tourism police on a contractual basis to create a sense of security among the tourists coming to the State. Mr. Desai said, 'The force will also provide necessary information about the culture, history, tourist places, laws, rules and tourism, promoting sustainable tourism.'
The Tourism Department has directed the State Security Board and Maharashtra Ex-Servicemen Corporation Ltd. (MESCO) to submit the details of their employees as soon as possible.
'The launching of the Tourism Security Force will give a new lease of life to tourism and, at the same time, create new employment opportunities at local places,' stated Mr. Desai.
The force will undergo special training to guide and protect tourists and have modern technology and a coordinated system to respond immediately in emergencies. Facilities like CCTV, helpline and an immediate response system will be available at tourist destinations.
Principal Secretary Atul Patne also mentioned that this is a positive step towards creating a security shield for tourists. 'It will increase the influx of tourists towards tourism and provide economic benefits to local communities,' said Mr. Patne.
Mahabaleshwar Festival
The pilot project will be implemented during the Mahabaleshwar Festival, where 25 personnel will be appointed through the Office of the Satara District Superintendent of Police. These personnel will be provided with the necessary training for the safety of tourists and as per the planning of the festival. This force will remain operational from 25 April to 31 August 2025.
Satara Superintendent of Police will appoint senior officers to ensure personnel perform their duties appropriately. The expenditure incurred for this initiative will be borne by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation in coordination with the Maharashtra State Security Corporation and the Office of the Satara District Superintendent of Police.
After the successful implementation on a pilot basis at the Mahabaleshwar Festival, a 'Maharashtra Tourism Security Force' will be set up for the entire Maharashtra. Under this initiative, a target of ₹1 lakh crore private investment and 18 lakh direct and indirect employment generation has been set in the tourism sector.

Uttarakhand cabinet approves Lord Vishnu icon constructions at Badrinath
The Uttarakhand cabinet on Wednesday approved the construction of icons associated with Lord Vishnu at the Badrinath temple complex as part of its redevelopment master plan. The four projects include a Sheshnetra Lotus Wall to be built at the Badrinath lakefront, a Sudarshan Chakra sculpture to be erected at the Badrinath arrival plaza, a Sudarshan Chowk 'kalakriti' (artwork) to be installed at the same spot and a tree and river sculpture at Badrinarayan Chowk within the Himalayan temple's premises. Located at a height of more than 10,000 feet from the sea level, the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Informing the media about the decisions taken by the state cabinet, Shailesh Bagauli, Secretary to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, said. The projects have been conceived by the Tourism Department under the Badrinath redevelopment master plan. Their implementation will either be funded under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), or by the Centre or the state government, he said. The cabinet also gave its approval to restructure the Uttarakhand Human Rights Commission by creating 12 new posts in addition to the 47 already in existence. The cabinet also approved the creation of 15 new posts in the Uttarakhand Subordinate Service Selection Commission apart from the 62 already in existence for its better functioning. The cabinet decided to exempt only plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and strong hybrid electric vehicles from the motor vehicle tax payable under the new rule 125 'M' of the Central Motor Vehicles (Ninth Amendment) Rules, 2023. The objective of the decision is to encourage vehicle owners to purchase and use vehicles of the said category and also to reduce pollution. The tax exemption will be valid only once in the current financial year 2025-26, Bagauli said.

To amp up tourism infrastructure, UP Cabinet gives nod to Homestay Policy
Aiming to provide comfortable accommodation options for devotees and tourists visiting the state's religious and tourist destinations, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Uttar Pradesh Bed and Breakfast (B&B) and Homestay Policy-2025. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. According to the Tourism Department, the new policy was necessitated as hotels at religious and tourist destinations usually get fully booked, leaving visitors with limited or no lodging options. The policy seeks to resolve this issue by enabling local residents to offer homestay accommodations, it said. Under the policy, only a small fee —ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 750 — will be charged to register homestays in rural areas. For urban and silver-category homestays, the application fee has been fixed at Rs 2,000. Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, state Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna said under the policy, any individual residing in a proximity to a religious or tourist site will be allowed to register a homestay unit consisting of 1 to 6 rooms, with a capacity of a maximum of 12 beds. Tourists can avail of the facility for up to seven consecutive days, with provisions for extension through a renewal process, he said. The registration and approval of homestays will be overseen by a committee headed by the district magistrate and superintendent of police concerned to ensure safety and compliance. With no state-level policy for homestays till now, homestay operators had to register on the Central government's NIDHI+ portal. Under the new policy, they can now register easily by getting a no-objection certificate (NOC) from local authorities. Khanna further said that the policy also includes financial support and incentives to encourage residents to offer part of their homes for tourism purposes. It will not only provide affordable and convenient accommodation for tourists, but will also create new income and job opportunities for local people, he said, adding that the move is expected to strengthen the state's economy and tourism infrastructure. Khanna said 10 of the 11 proposals presented before the Cabinet were given approval. Among these were the approval for the construction of annapurna bhawans to strengthen the public distribution system (PDS) and ensure smooth availability of foodgrains to ration card holders. To speed up the construction process, the government has decided to use savings from the fiscal savings as well. The proposal gives the option of seeking funds for construction from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), State Finance Commission, MP and MLA funds, Purvanchal and Bundelkhand Development Funds, or any other state or Central government scheme that allows such construction. If funds are not available from these sources, the Food and Civil Supplies Department will arrange the money from its own savings, it is learnt. Around 75 to 100 Aannapurna Bhawans will be built in each district every year. The policy also includes provisions for maintaining these bhawans. Also, the Cabinet has approved incentive funds for five mega-category industrial units under the Uttar Pradesh Industrial Investment and Employment Promotion Policy-2017. The government has approved the first installment to these industrial units.

Operation Sindoor: Installation inaugurated at Dilli Haat
NEW DELHI: An installation based on Operation Sindoor dedicated to the valour of the Indian Armed Forces was inaugurated at Dilli Haat by Art and Culture Minister Kapil Mishra on Wednesday. The installation highlights how the Indian forces destroyed terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and PoK. Noting its significance, Mishra expressed, 'The Operation Sindoor installation is an effort to pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the Indian Army. This installation will serve as a reminder to both Indian citizens and international visitors of the extraordinary bravery and heroism of the Indian soldiers.' In a symbolic gesture, visitors were invited to apply 'sindoor' (vermilion) at the installation as a 'tilak' in tribute to the armed forces. The Tourism Department of the Delhi government has planned to set up similar installations at various locations in the city as part of the initiative. The installation in Dilli Haat will remain on display for the next 15 days, officials said.
