Man who filmed children at Barshaw Park walks free after sheriff ruling

Daily Record06-06-2025
Sheriff Sukhwinder Gill ruled there was no criminal intent, describing the incident as a case of "naivety" and granting an absolute discharge.
A tourist who was seen filming a small child in a park has walked free from court after a sheriff ruled no criminality had taken place.
Janpreet Singh, 29, was confronted by a furious dad after he was spotted taking a video of the youngster at Barshaw Park in Paisley.

The man filmed Singh and shared the footage on social media in a bid to identify him, sparking huge concern in the community.

Singh had travelled from India to visit his sister who identified him from the video and went to police in March. She told officers he had been making videos to share with family in India.
Officers later found the video of the child along with two others showing swans and park scenes. Singh appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court and admitted filming the child.
But when he appeared for sentencing, Sheriff Sukhwinder Gill ruled no criminality had taken place and granted Singh an absolute discharge.
The rare move means that he will receive no punishment.
His lawyer had previously claimed there had been a 'certain level of naivety' involved in what Singh, who spent two nights in custody over the case, was doing.

Sheriff Gill told him: "You went to Barshaw Park, you recorded videos and intended to send them to your family in India.
"I don't believe there was anything more to it than that. As a consequence of these proceedings you have chosen not to go home.

"Given the Crown narrative and your explanation as to how the child was recorded by you, I do wonder why you pled guilty to this charge.
"I also question why your image was uploaded on social media, which in itself seemed to have caused huge concern in the local community that there was an Asian male in the park who may be a 'paedophile'."
The sheriff added: "I was going to admonish you, but I am going to take the unusual and exceptional step, not to proceed to conviction and grant you an absolute discharge.
"The reason for that is that I am not satisfied there was any criminality involved here. That is the end of the matter."

Prison officer killed 'one in a million' Scots dad after hitting him with car

Robert Jardine was returning from a night shift at HMP Addiewell when he hit the man who was walking on a cycle path. A prison officer has admitted causing the death of a dog walker after striking him with his car. ‌ Robert Jardine, 40, was returning from a night shift at HMP Addiewell when he hit William Henderson in Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire. ‌ He stopped his Citroen and contacted the emergency services before trying to help a stricken Mr Henderson, 49, who had been walking on a cycle path. ‌ Mr Henderson, a dad-of-two and a grandfather, was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow but died hours later in May last year. Medics discovered he had suffered a 'significant' head injury, a fractured neck and was in cardiac arrest. Jardine told police investigating the horror incident: "I was driving home from work and saw a male walking a dog and as I approached him he just walked out in front of me." He was charged over the incident after an eight month investigation. Jardine, of Cumbernauld, appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court and admitted causing death by careless driving. The court heard Mr Henderson was walking his pet dog at 8.10am when Jardine's car left the road and struck him. ‌ A witness heard Jardine say in the aftermath of the incident: "He just walked out in front of me, I couldn't stop." The police investigation found Jardine approached Mr Henderson, who had his back towards the vehicle, at 39mph and then hit him. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The bumper of the Citroen was broken and there was damage to the headlights as a result of Mr Henderson being struck. Tony Lenehan KC, defending, said: "Nothing I say can undo the harm caused to Mr Henderson and his family. ‌ "Mr Henderson was in no way responsible for what happened and was perfectly entitled to be walking in the cycle lane and to expect drivers to drive safely. "Mr Jardine has no previous convictions and has no points on his licence." Sheriff Paul Haran deferred sentence until next month for reports, continued bail and disqualified Jardine from driving meantime. Mr Henderson's loved ones had previously paid tribute to him and described him as 'one of life's good guys' and 'one in a million'.

Ryanair passenger removed from Edinburgh flight after 'vaping in toilet'

The Ryanair passenger, a 21-year-old man, was removed from the Edinburgh Airport flight after he was accused of committing an aviation offence. A RyanAir passenger was marched off a plane by six police officers at Edinburgh Airport after allegedly vaping in a cabin toilet. ‌ A 21-year-old man caused a two-hour delay to his flight after it is said he puffed on a vape in the loo before the plane was due to take off at Edinburgh Airport for Alicante, Spain. ‌ Police are said to have stormed the aircraft and detained the young man on suspicion of breaching aviation laws, reports the Mirror. ‌ Tristan James Walker, one of the passengers waiting for the plane to leave, filmed the encounter. The 39-year-old man claims the toilet's smoke detector was triggered, resulting in the lad's swift ejection. Mr Walker said the man on his flight was bundled into a police van amid their delay. Authorities have confirmed the 21-year-old suspect has been charged in relation to an aviation offence. ‌ Speaking yesterday about the footage, shot on July 3, Mr Walker said: "A young lad in a group happened to set the alarm off for apparently vaping. "The pilot then came out after the air stewardess explained what happened, and then the pilot stated he would be removed from the plane. The young lad waited for over six police officers to come on board. "He was taken off, he was very calm, didn't argue or anything, no drama. We then happened to bump into him on Benidorm's famous strip and he told us he just got a caution and was banned from Ryanair." ‌ A representative for Police Scotland said: "Around 7.55 am on Thursday, July 3, 2025 were called to an aircraft at Edinburgh Airport. Officers attended, and a 21-year-old man was charged in connection with an aviation offence. A report was submitted to the Procurator Fiscal." Ryanair has been approached for comment. At around 9.55pm UK time on July 22, easyJet flight EZY3282 from Dalaman, Turkey, to the Scottish capital took off and was due to arrive at around 12.45am on Wednesday morning. However, the aircraft was forced to make a U-turn over Serbia and land in Sofia, Bulgaria, roughly two hours into the journey following a reported technical issue. ‌ EasyJet said that the plane was due to complete the remainder of the journey on the following day. Karen, a passenger, from Drumchapel in Glasgow, claimed that the plane was diverted due to a "disgusting" smell. ‌ She said: "Two hours into our flight, everybody started smelling this horrible smell. It smelled of a dirty nappy. It was disgusting. "It clearly went all the way through to the cockpit because the pilot got on the tannoy and spoke to the whole plane. "He told us that he had never smelled anything like this in all his years as a pilot and we would have to divert to Bulgaria so it could be investigated."
