Adani to build India's biggest privately funded coal power plant in a decade

Indian billionaire Gautam Adani's group will build and operate a $3 billion coal-fired power plant in Bihar state with a 2.4 gigawatt capacity, it said on Thursday, the biggest coal plant constructed in India via private investment in a decade. The first of three units at the plant will be commissioned within four years, with the last expected to come online in five years' time, Adani Power said. The move marks a return of private investment to India's greenfield coal-based power projects after more than a decade of absence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is targeting increasing the country's coal-based capacity by 80 GW, or more than a third, by 2032 to more than 290 GW, saying it was necessary to ensure reliable, round-the-clock power. Coal's share in India's power mix is starting to significantly decline due to a quick buildout of renewables, following rapid growth in coal use after the COVID-19 pandemic. The world's second largest coal producer and consumer still generates about three quarters of its electricity from coal annually, however, unlike top coal user China which has progressively reduced its dependence on the polluting fuel. India's Adani Group stocks slip on report US probing alleged Iran sanctions evasion The project in Pirpainti, eastern Bihar, will be Adani Power's largest new plant since its 3.3 GW Tiroda project was fully commissioned in 2014. The company will supply power at just over 6 Indian rupees ($0.0684) per kilowatt hour to Bihar's state-run distribution companies from the Pirpainti plant, it said in a statement. Adani currently operates 18.1 GW of coal-fired power capacity in eight states and 12 plants across the country, and won bids to build and operate a 1.5 GW plant in the northern Uttar Pradesh state in May and a 1.6 GW capacity facility in Maharashtra in September 2024.

Trump's higher tariff rates hit goods from major US trading partners

President Donald Trump's higher tariff rates of 10% to 50% on dozens of trading partners kicked in on Thursday, testing his strategy for shrinking U.S. trade deficits without massive disruptions to global supply chains, higher inflation and stiff retaliation from trading partners. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency began collecting the higher tariffs at 12:01 a.m. EDT (0401 GMT) after weeks of suspense over Trump's final tariff rates and frantic negotiations with major trading partners that sought to lower them. Goods loaded onto U.S.-bound vessels and in transit before the midnight deadline can enter at lower prior tariff rates before October 5, according to a CBP notice to shippers, opens new tab issued this week. Imports from many countries had previously been subject to a baseline 10% import duty after Trump paused higher rates announced in early April. But since then, Trump has frequently modified his tariff plan, slapping some countries with much higher rates, including 50% for goods from Brazil, 39% from Switzerland, 35% from Canada and 25% from India. He announced a separate 25% tariff on Indian goods on Wednesday to be imposed in 21 days over the South Asian country's purchases of Russian oil. Ahead of the deadline, Trump heralded the 'billions of dollars' that will flow into the U.S., largely from countries that he said had taken advantage of the United States. 'THE ONLY THING THAT CAN STOP AMERICA'S GREATNESS WOULD BE A RADICAL LEFT COURT THAT WANTS TO SEE OUR COUNTRY FAIL!' Trump said on Truth Social. Eight major trading partners accounting for about 40% of U.S. trade flows have reached framework deals for trade and investment concessions with Trump, including the European Union, Japan and South Korea, reducing their base tariff rates to 15%. Britain won a 10% rate, while Vietnam, Indonesia, Pakistan and the Philippines secured rate reductions to 19% or 20%. 'For those countries, it's less bad news,' said William Reinsch, a senior fellow and trade expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. 'There'll be some supply chain rearrangement. There'll be a new equilibrium. Prices here will go up, but it'll take a while for that to show up in a major way,' Reinsch said. Countries with punishingly high duties, such as India and Canada, 'will continue to scramble around trying to fix this,' he added. Trump's order has specified that any goods determined to have been trans-shipped from a third country to evade higher U.S. tariffs will be subject to an additional 40% import duty, but his administration has released few details on how these goods would be identified or the provision enforced. Trump's July 31 tariff order, imposed duties above 10% on 67 trading partners, while the rate was kept at 10% for those not listed. These import taxes are one part of a multilayered tariff strategy that includes national security-based sectoral tariffs on semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, autos, steel, aluminum, copper, lumber and other goods. Trump said on Wednesday the microchip duties could reach 100%. China is on a separate tariff track and will face a potential tariff increase on August 12 unless Trump approves an extension of a prior truce after talks last week in Sweden. He has said he may impose additional tariffs over China's purchases of Russian oil as he seeks to pressure Moscow into ending its war in Ukraine. Financial markets largely shrugged off the new tariffs, with stock markets in Asia at or near record highs while the dollar dipped slightly. Revenues, price hikes Trump has touted the vast increase in federal revenues from his import tax collections, which are ultimately paid by companies importing the goods and consumers of end products. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that U.S. tariff revenues could top $300 billion a year. The move will drive average U.S. tariff rates to around 20%, the highest in a century and up from 2.5% when Trump took office in January, the Atlantic Institute estimates. Commerce Department data released last week showed more evidence that tariffs began driving up U.S. prices in June, including for home furnishings and durable household equipment, recreational goods and motor vehicles. Costs from Trump's tariff war are mounting for a wide swath of companies, including bellwethers Caterpillar, Marriott, Molson Coors and Yum Brands. All told, global companies that have reported earnings so far this quarter are looking at a hit of around $15 billion to profits in 2025, Reuters' global tariff tracker shows.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif said, '1.5 million registrations and 7 million applications have been received under 'Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar' project, now people believe that they will get loans on merit. I am surprised that one day a loan was received and after three weeks a house is being built, we have built thousands of houses without claiming State should fulfill its motherly promise.' She underscored, 'Clinics on Wheels across Punjab are providing treatment facilities at the doorsteps of patients, they have succeeded in filling the lack of trust between the state and the people.' The Chief Minister said, 'Problems in the worst areas of every city will be solved on priority basis, clean drinking water will be provided in South Punjab and Pothohar region. It is my resolve to make 24,000 villages a model, streets and roads of every village will be paved, schools and hospitals will be revamped and sewage systems etc. are being built.' The CM flagged, 'Destiny of Punjab is in the hands of service, not conspiracy. We will fulfill every promise and leave a mark of service at every step. She said, 'Landless people will be given loans to build plots and houses in 19 cities of Punjab. Punjab government is launching a new project every day. Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar is very close to my heart. No one can be evicted from their homes for not paying rent. It is good for parents to give their children the peace of home. I share the happiness of every person and every family who built his own house. I bow my head and thank Allah Almighty for the success of the Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar project. Loans under Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar is 100% interest-free, to be repaid in 9 years. Monthly instalment was made less than Rs15,000. Under the Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar project, everyone can easily pay Rs15,000 per month.' She explained, 'Calls were made to 60 to 70 thousand people to ensure transparency in the project. 95% of the people's feedback about the Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar project was satisfactory. I hear calls daily regarding the project. These are not 64 thousand houses but thousands of stories and tales.' The Chief Minister said, 'By the end of August, disbursement of loans will reach 64 to 75 thousand. The target of building 100,000 houses in one year and 500,000 in five years will be achieved. About 2.5 million people will benefit under Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar project. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif also built houses during their tenures and gave them to the people.' She added, 'Official estimate for building and giving away a house was Rs 4 million, which was difficult for the common man.' The Chief Minister said, 'People are witnesses, no one needed recommendation or bribe for a loan. No house was built with bribe or recommendation, you can hold your head up and say that this is my house. I have my eye on every story of Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar project.' She added, 'Those who used to lift the bricks of other people's houses are today laying the bricks of their own houses and picking up the keys. I saw husbands, wives and children working hard for their houses. I promised to give the people their roof, I kept my promise and the people also kept their promise by returning a thousand million rupees in instalments. I am happy that I could facilitate people, the prayers of the people are my asset.' She asserted, 'The claim of building one crore houses could not be removed from the files. 1.5 million registration and 7 million applications have been received under Apni Chhat, Apni Ghar project. Now people believe that they will get a loan on merit. Houses are being built in every district under the project. I want to build more houses in South Punjab. I want to build 150,000 houses annually under Apni Chhat, Apni Ghar project. If Almighty Allah gives me the means, then let it all be poured on the people. I thank Amjad Hafeez and SMU for informing me about the public feedback.' Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
