Modern Parenting Trends That Baffle Older Generations
Every generation tries to parent differently to the one before. But how different is too different? We recently asked older people in the BuzzFeed Community to share the modern parenting trends that completely confuse them. Here's what they had to say...
Throwing over-the-top birthday parties.
"I am shocked how elaborate children's birthday parties have become. Also that schools want people to invite the whole class." —greenphone66
Being overprotective.
"Shielding your kid from any and everything to 'protect' them. Family can't hold the baby because she might get sick. Don't let her fall asleep on you because we don't want her to get used to 'contact sleep.' Never getting a sitter because we don't trust anyone to be with her. Homeschooling because we know better. Get over yourselves. Raising your kid in a bubble doesn't help them in the long run, it makes them incompetent and entitled. Kids need to experience life to learn to navigate it, be happy, and find purpose. "—Anonymous, Pennsylvania
But not protective enough with social media.
"Creating social media accounts for your babies. Why aren't you protecting their right to anonymity?"—Anonymous, UK
Permissive parenting.
"Kids can learn about their feelings and how to handle them without driving the rest of the world mad with their tantrums and complete meltdowns while their parents just coddle them and tell them it's OK. Drives me NUTS...teach your kids to be respectful of others." —stylishchair815
Gender reveals.
"Not sure if it counts as a parenting trend, but pre-birth gender reveals." —Tez
Allowing devices.
"I cannot stress this enough; an iPad is not a babysitter. I will never get over the fact that parents use devices with addictive app games that rot their children's brains as pacifiers. This needs to stop. We don't need another ruined generation. "—Anonymous
Doing double duty working from home.
"Working from home as a way to keep your kid out of daycare. It was a necessity during Covid, but has turned into a 'mom hack' that leaves both your child and job neglected."—Anonymous, Charleston, SC
Co-sleeping.
"Co-sleeping! Then, when they want the child to sleep in their own bed, they get upset and sometimes even angry with the child when they refuse to sleep in their own bed and cry!"—Anonymous
Tracking everything.
"Obsessively tracking baby stuff on apps and baby monitors (when you live in a small apartment)." —Hannah
Not letting kids "lose."
"Not letting your kid learn what it means to lose. Participation trophies."—Anonymous, SC
Overly "unique" names.
"Ridiculous names. Poor kids will have a lifetime of explaining where their names come from — and how to spell them."
Swearing.
"Swearing at/with your kids. I'm not a prude or anything, but I've noticed that people are so nonchalant with their swearing that 1) the kids use it without understanding the meaning or context, and 2) the words have lost their bite in general."—surprisedlegend852
Fighting their battles for them.
"Over-parenting. You need to let them make mistakes. Do your best to make the hardest lessons hit less hard, but in the end, they don't learn unless they experience it themselves." —Trent
Over-scheduling.
"Let them be bored! Kids need time for independent and creative thinking. The times I was bored was when I learned how much I loved art and reading. Kids don't get a chance to learn how to self-regulate when you pack every moment of their day, or give them a tablet because you don't want to engage."—magicalshield808
Anti-sunscreen parents.
—Kay
Sad beige aesthetics.
"The sad beige mom trend. If you want to make the rest of your home sad and beige, that's up to you. But my god! Please let your child's nursery have some colour for their own development and well-being."—Ok_Procedure4993

Father-daughter duo from Feeding Hills share their passion of music
FEEDING HILLS, Mass. (WWLP) – A dad and his daughter from Feeding Hills are sharing their passion ahead of Father's Day. This local father and daughter are singers, songwriters, and guitarists. But it all started when Dad realized that twins on the way meant more time around family. 'I don't know what I was thinking, but when Natalie and her identical twin were born in 1992, I quit my day job, so to speak, and became a full-time musician,' said Gary Jones. Girl Scouts donate nearly 14,000 boxes of cookies at Barnes Air National Guard Base 'Family is the best,' said Natalie Jones, Gary's daughter. 'I absolutely feel so blessed to be able to work with my dad every day.' A father-daughter duo living out their dream together, Gary and Natalie perform hits and classics alongside each other. Growing up, Natalie watched her dad perform, and just a few years into her social work career, she decided to make a shift. 'COVID really hit in 2020, and that is when my job shifted a lot,' Natalie said. 'And I was feeling burnt out, and Dad was like, 'Come join me, let's see.'' Gary says Natalie brought a contemporary style to the stage, a piece that he was missing. Both father and daughter have never taken a music class, but it's the passion that has guided them, even during disagreements. 'I think that the biggest issue that we sometimes have is who is going to sing the lead and who is going to sing the harmony,' Gary said. 'Like when he wants to play a song or add a song into the set list and I'm like really not feeling it,' Natalie added. From a young age, it's always been the twins, their dad, and music. 'My dad had to push his name out there and kind of scrape to get those calls in the very beginning,' Natalie said. 'He just let me swoop in and he took me under his wing as a mentor.' Now Natalie and Gary say you would be surprised how easy it is to perform together. The family dynamic allows their voices to blend well, and they say not to be afraid to take that leap of faith if you aren't doing what you love. Tom Hiddleston Puppy Interview
You've asked, and the day has finally arrived. The effortlessly charming Tom Hiddleston sat down with BuzzFeed to do our Puppy Interview. To celebrate Tom's critically-acclaimed turn in Mike Flanagan's new film, The Life of Chuck, Tom sat down to chat all about working with the beloved writer and director on adapting this Stephen King story, as well as look back at some other big moments in his career, like Loki and Marvel, and so much more. The Life of Chuck follows Charles "Chuck" Krantz (Hiddleston), whose life is chronicled in reverse-chronological order as we see how he's impacted the universe and the people around him. Hiddleston shares the role with Jacob Tremblay, Benjamin Pajak, and Cody Flanagan. For starters, Tom talked about his big dance number in The Life of Chuck and how he wasn't a classically trained dancer before starring in the film. He discussed the scene that he and Chris Hemsworth could not get through without laughing, and it happened in Thor: The Dark World. Tom also said that if he could see Loki interact with any other Marvel character he hasn't had a chance to yet, he'd love to see Loki and Daredevil, so he could work with his "dear friend" Charlie Cox again. Of course, outside of his work onscreen, we also just got to get to know Tom a little more. Like, he talked about which Bon Iver song he has on repeat right now, the movie that always makes him cry, and more. Basically, the whole thing was just supremely wholesome, and so calming. You can check out Tom's full puppy interview below: Also, all of these adorable puppies are available for adoption through Pawsitive Beginnings. And be sure to watch The Life of Chuck, which is in select theaters now and everywhere June 13.
