HP Inc. Earnings Missed Analyst Estimates: Here's What Analysts Are Forecasting Now
It's been a mediocre week for HP Inc. (NYSE:HPQ) shareholders, with the stock dropping 11% to US$24.90 in the week since its latest second-quarter results. Statutory earnings per share fell badly short of expectations, coming in at US$0.42, some 41% below analyst forecasts, although revenues were okay, approximately in line with analyst estimates at US$13b. Earnings are an important time for investors, as they can track a company's performance, look at what the analysts are forecasting for next year, and see if there's been a change in sentiment towards the company. So we gathered the latest post-earnings forecasts to see what estimates suggest is in store for next year. This technology could replace computers: discover the 20 stocks are working to make quantum computing a reality. Following last week's earnings report, HP's 15 analysts are forecasting 2025 revenues to be US$54.8b, approximately in line with the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are forecast to shrink 9.4% to US$2.43 in the same period. Before this earnings report, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$55.0b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$3.10 in 2025. The analysts seem to have become more bearish following the latest results. While there were no changes to revenue forecasts, there was a large cut to EPS estimates. See our latest analysis for HP It might be a surprise to learn that the consensus price target fell 14% to US$27.74, with the analysts clearly linking lower forecast earnings to the performance of the stock price. That's not the only conclusion we can draw from this data however, as some investors also like to consider the spread in estimates when evaluating analyst price targets. The most optimistic HP analyst has a price target of US$33.32 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at US$25.00. This is a very narrow spread of estimates, implying either that HP is an easy company to value, or - more likely - the analysts are relying heavily on some key assumptions. One way to get more context on these forecasts is to look at how they compare to both past performance, and how other companies in the same industry are performing. It's also worth noting that the years of declining revenue look to have come to an end, with the forecast stauing flat to the end of 2025. Historically, HP's top line has shrunk approximately 2.6% annually over the past five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 5.6% per year. Although HP's revenues are expected to improve, it seems that it is still expected to grow slower than the wider industry. The biggest concern is that the analysts reduced their earnings per share estimates, suggesting business headwinds could lay ahead for HP. Fortunately, the analysts also reconfirmed their revenue estimates, suggesting that it's tracking in line with expectations. Although our data does suggest that HP's revenue is expected to perform worse than the wider industry. The consensus price target fell measurably, with the analysts seemingly not reassured by the latest results, leading to a lower estimate of HP's future valuation. Keeping that in mind, we still think that the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for investors to consider.
