'Destiny willed otherwise': Grieving family of Air India air hostess Manisha Thapa in Patna
Manisha's family resides near Shyama Apartment at Jagdeo Path, barely 500 metres from the Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP) battalion headquarters, in the state capital.
Manisha's two uncles -- Guddu Bahadur Thapa and Babloo Thapa -- both havildars in the BSAP, said that they received information about the tragic incident from her friend over phone around 2 pm.
'The family members have already left for Ahmedabad after receiving information about the tragedy that struck the family,' they said.
Both Guddu and Babloo are currently posted as havildars at BSAP battalion headquarters in the state capital. Manisha's father Raju Thapa is a member of BSAP and currently posted in Bihar's Begusarai district while her mother, Laxmi Thapa, is a housewife. Manisha's younger brother Amit Thapa is pursuing graduation from a Patna-based college.
Manisha's mother's condition worsened after receiving the shocking news. 'She is under supervision of a doctor ever since she came to know about the incident,' said a family member, who was sitting beside Laxmi to console her.

Punjab: Khaira's ex-PSO arrested in drug case from Delhi airport
Punjab Police on Saturday arrested a former personal security officer (PSO) of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira from Indira Gandhi International Airport in connection with a drug case registered in 2015 in which Khaira was also nominated. An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) with Punjab Police, Joga Singh had been absconding since being nominated as an accused on September 28, 2023. His bail plea was rejected by the sessions court in Fazilka in October 2023 and then by the high court in January 2024, but he remained at large. Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira Joga Singh was detained by immigration authorities at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi while attempting to flee to Australia due to a look-out circular (LoC) issued by the special investigation team (SIT) in November 2023. He was taken on transit remand and produced before a court in Jalalabad, which granted police his five-day remand. The case The case was first registered in March 2015 by the Fazilka police after 2-kg heroin, 24 gold biscuits, pistols, Pakistani SIM cards and a mobile phone besides a firearm were seized and nine people—including Gurdev Singh, an alleged close aide of Khaira—were arrested. During the investigation, MLA Khaira's name surfaced due to frequent phone calls with Singh. Khaira, the three-time Congress MLA from Bholath, was arrested in 2023 from his Chandigarh residence following a probe by the special investigation team (SIT) led by then Jalandhar DIG and now Ludhiana police commissioner Swapan Sharma. He was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana high court. The former PSO was nominated after he did not join the investigation being conducted by the SIT. Punjab finance minister and chairman of the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' Cabinet Subcommittee, Harpal Singh Cheema, said the arrest of Joga Singh is a significant step toward justice for the victims of the 2015 Gurdev Singh Debi drug racket. Addressing a press conference, Cheema said the decade-long delay in the case was due to the alleged involvement of those who had political connections with the Shiromani Akali Dal and Congress leadership. The finance minister further said that Joga Singh played a key role in facilitating communication between Sukhpal Singh Khaira and both Gurdev Singh, who has been convicted in this case, and Gurdev's UK-based sister Charanjit Kaur. The minister said Joga Singh used his mobile phone to arrange these calls while Gurdev Singh was a fugitive. The minister further added that call detail analysis showed multiple instances where Joga Singh and Gurdev Singh were at the same location, even in Khaira's absence. Government claims misleading: Khaira Khaira termed Cheema's allegations a malicious and baseless propaganda concerning the arrest of his former PSO Joga Singh. 'This misinformation campaign, primarily fueled by certain AAP leaders, is a deliberate attempt to tarnish my reputation and mislead the public. I stand firm in my commitment to truth and justice. The recent judicial interventions by the Supreme Court provide irrefutable evidence of my stance,' said Khaira. 'The Supreme Court, in its order dated April 10, 2024, stayed all proceedings related to the NDPS case involving me until the next hearing. The court, presided over by Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal, had directed the state not to proceed further with the trial before the trial court. This stay order dismantles any narrative suggesting ongoing culpability or urgency in the case,' said Khaira. 'The legal battle surrounding this case has a complex history in which the Punjab and Haryana high court granted me bail on January 4, 2024, with Justice Anoop Chitkara recording a prima facie satisfaction that I was not guilty. The Supreme Court, on January 18, 2024, upheld the bail decision, rejecting an appeal by the Punjab government and AAP, further reinforcing the lack of substantive evidence against me,' said Khaira. He said the 'smear' campaign appears to be a continuation of 'political vendetta'. 'The timing of Joga Singh's arrest at Delhi airport, as reported on August 9, and the subsequent amplification of false narratives suggest a coordinated effort to deflect attention from governance issues,' he said.

Noida daycare attendant accused of biting toddler is a minor herself
Noida: An attendant accused of torturing a 15-month-old child and biting her in the thighs at a daycare facility in Sector 137 is a minor, who should be attending school instead of working in one. Just 16 years old, the attendant and the owner of Blippi Pre-School and Day Care, which operated from a 3BHK flat in Paras Tierea, were named in the FIR lodged on a complaint by the toddler's parents. The teenager, according to police, was hired at the facility only 10 days ago without any formal training. Her parents work as house helps in the same sector. Monica and Sandeep Kumar, the baby's parents, had been sending their daughter at the daycare since May 21. Sandeep, who works in the IT department of a UK-based multinational company, had ensured the daycare's safety by checking the installation of 5 CCTV cameras. On the day of the incident — on Monday — Sandeep dropped off his daughter at 10.30am, while Monica picked her up after a couple of hours. Unlike other days, all teachers came to the gate, saying that the child had been crying all day long. When she returned home, Monica discovered bite marks on her daughter's thighs. "My wife asked the teachers about the bite marks, but was told she had some infection from home. She ran to a doctor immediately. The doctor confirmed it wasn't an infection, but marks of human teeth. He also told my wife that it appeared that our daughter had been tortured because she was visibly scared. My wife came home and informed me. I left office without any delay," Sandeep said. When the couple encountered the daycare owner, she initially ruled out any such torture. The sought CCTV footage, but getting it was easier said than done. Citing technical issues, the lack of an application and even snapped wires, the staff at the daycare delayed providing the CCTV feed for four days. They eventually relented on Thursday after police intervened. Seeing the footage, the couple got the shock of their lives. It showed the attendant punching the child in a room, pushing her off a swing, dropping her on the floor, beating her with a plastic bat, and even inserting a pencil into her mouth. Sandeep alleged that the daycare tried to cover up the incident to safeguard its image. "Charu would send a video of my daughter every 30 minutes daily since her admission. But on the day of the incident, I didn't get a single clip from her. I think Charu was aware of what had happened and was trying to protect her image. Even when we complained to her, she put the blame on us, saying our child had suffered the injuries at home," he added. Vinod Kumar Mishra, the SHO of Sector 142 police station, confirmed that an FIR had registered against Charu and the caretaker under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace) of BNS. The minor caretaker admitted to the assault, saying she was irritated as the child wouldn't stop crying. A medical report corroborated multiple injury marks on the toddler. Charu, the owner, said she had been running the daycare since 2021 and had all the necessary documents, including registration from the local administration. "On the day of the incident, the girl was crying since her father left her at the daycare. At that time, 18 other children were present there. She even ate her food in front of me. I had asked the attendant to take care of her. She was with the child for a maximum 3-4 minutes. I later came to know she had assaulted the child for no reason," she said. Charu asserted that she hired the teenager as she produced a card of the society that specified her age as 21. City magistrate Vivek Bhadoriya said commercial activities in gated societies should be monitored by RWA, with no involvement of the administration. Vikrant Mahajan, the RWA president, refrained from commenting on the daycare's legality. KC Virmani, the Child Welfare Committee president, said the case would be handed over to them on Monday. Training aircraft crash-lands at Baramati airport after bird hit
A training aircraft of Redbird Flight Training Academy crash-landed at Baramati airport at around 8am on Saturday following a suspected bird-hit incident, said police officials, adding that no injuries were reported. The aircraft made an emergency landing on the airstrip, which falls under the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and used by Redbird for training operations. Rathod said the pilot's quick response prevented injuries and further damage. 'The pilot reported that a bird appeared in front of the aircraft during landing, causing the front wheel to get damaged and bent on touchdown. This led the aircraft to veer off the taxiway to the other side of the airport. The front wheel eventually came off due to the damage,' he said. The aircraft made an emergency landing on the airstrip, which falls under the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and used by Redbird for training operations. Rathod said the pilot's quick response prevented injuries and further damage. Preliminary findings suggest a technical failure, possibly due to the damaged tyre, as the immediate cause of the incident, officials said. Sandeep Gill, superintendent of police, Pune rural, said, 'A probe has been ordered to determine the exact cause of Saturday's crash.' This is the latest in a series of accidents involving Redbird's fleet in Baramati. On October 19, 2023, a Tecnam P2008 aircraft (VT-RBT) experienced engine trouble and crash-landed near Katfal village. Three days later, on October 22, another Tecnam P2008 from the academy crash-landed near Gojubavi village during an emergency landing, injuring the instructor and trainee pilot. Earlier, on September 20, 2021, a Tecnam P2008JC (VT-RBE) overshot the runway at Baramati airport during a solo circuit and landing, causing major damage but no injuries. Other flying schools in Baramati have also reported mishaps. On February 5, 2019, a Cessna 172S (VT-RDX) operated by Carver Aviation crashed after running out of fuel during a solo cross-country training flight, seriously injuring the pilot. Concerns over such incidents led to a complaint to minister of state for civil aviation Murlidhar Mohol on August 2, 2025, urging the Centre to frame stricter safety norms for flight training academies. Following a spate of five accidents in six months, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had suspended Redbird's flight training operations at all six of its bases in October 2023 to enforce safety improvements. The Delhi-based institute, operational since 2017, runs bases at Baramati in Pune district, Lilabari in Assam, Gulbarga and Belgaum in Karnataka, Seoni in Madhya Pradesh, and Colombo in Sri Lanka. Redbird did not respond to requests for comment.
