Hamas leaders met Pakistani terror groups in PoK before Pahalgam attack, says Israel envoy

Time of India27-04-2025

New Delhi, April 25 (IANS) The deadly alliance between terror outfit Hamas and Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), now expanding its network and operations from the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) to the streets of Bangladesh, lies exposed once again after Tuesday's barbaric killing of innocent civilians in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam.
Two months before the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians, senior Hamas leaders met Pakistani terrorist groups in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Israel's envoy to India, Reuven Azar, has drawn sharp parallels between the Jammu and Kashmir attack and Hamas's October 2023 assault on Israel. Indian intelligence has flagged growing links between Hamas and Pakistan-based groups, deepening concerns over cross-border terror networks. Amid these developments, Israel continues to press India to officially designate Hamas as a terrorist organisation.

Israel presses India on Hamas designation
The terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which left 26 civilians dead, bears striking similarities to the Hamas-led massacre in Israel last year, according to Israel's Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar.'There are similarities between the Pahalgam attack and what happened on October 7 [2023] in Israel. Innocent tourists were enjoying their vacation in Pahalgam, while in Israel, people were celebrating at a music festival,' Azar told PTI.Around 1,200 Israelis were killed in that attack, sparking Israel's long and ongoing war in Gaza.Azar warned that global terror outfits are now collaborating more closely. Speaking to NDTV, he said, "The terrorists are collaborating at all levels and trying to be copycats of each other. I am sure the intelligence agencies are working together to defeat them."According to a TOI report , investigations revealed that two months before the Pahalgam attack, senior Hamas figures had travelled to PoK for a public gathering. Indian intelligence reports highlight that Hamas spokespersons Khalid Qaddoumi and Naji Zaheer, along with leaders Mufti Azam and Bilal Alsallat, attended a rally at Rawalakot on 5 February 2025.The rally, titled 'Kashmir Solidarity and Hamas Operation Al Aqsa Flood ,' was reportedly attended by nearly 100 foreign militants. Qaddoumi and others addressed the gathering, which coincided with Pakistan's annual observance of ' Kashmir Solidarity Day '.Photographs and footage from the event, reported by Moneycontrol.com, showed Hamas leaders wearing shawls adorned with the flags of Pakistan, Palestine, and Hamas. This marked an unprecedented moment: it was the first known visit of Palestinian militant leaders to PoK.The gathering is seen by Indian security officials as a deliberate move to link Pakistan's jihadi campaign in Kashmir with Hamas's struggle against Israel, portraying both as 'resistance against occupation.'This event in Rawalakot was not an isolated instance. Hamas representatives have made repeated visits to Pakistan over the past year, especially after their October 2023 assault on Israel.A Hamas team recently visited the Jaish-e-Mohammed headquarters in Bahawalpur, where they also toured a Pakistani Army facility inaugurated by Army chief Asim Munir. This facility lies close to Rajasthan and is strategically vital for Pakistan's military. In another development in January 2024, Hamas spokesperson Qaddoumi was invited to address Pakistan's Parliament. During the session, a Pakistani MP claimed that the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) was intended to counter China's Belt and Road Initiative and declared, 'That plan is now buried under the rubble of Gaza.'A security source told TOI that Hamas leaders had also organised an 'Al-Aqsa Million March' in Karachi, with Qaddoumi praising Pakistan as an "elder brother" for hosting 15 Palestinian prisoners freed under a ceasefire agreement with Israel. The timing of these Hamas visits coincides with heightened Pakistani political and military activity in PoK.A day before the Rawalakot rally, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army chief Asim Munir made a rare joint visit to Muzaffarabad, diverging from the traditional low-key observance of Kashmir Solidarity Day.Observers link this urgency to India's increasingly assertive claims over PoK following the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had said last year that PoK would 'on its own' seek to join India once it witnesses the development happening across the Line of Control.External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, speaking at Chatham House in London, reinforced this message. He said, "Look, in Kashmir, we have actually done a good job solving most of it. I think removing Article 370 was step number one. Then, restoring growth, economic activity, and social justice in Kashmir was step number two. Holding elections with a very high turnout was step number three."He added, "I think the part we are waiting for is the return of the stolen part of Kashmir, which is under illegal Pakistani occupation. Once that is done, I assure you — Kashmir will be solved."Following the revelation of Hamas leaders' visit to PoK, Israel has once again urged India to formally classify Hamas as a terrorist organisation. While India condemned the October 7 attacks and expressed strong solidarity with Israel against terrorism, it has yet to proscribe Hamas under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. India continues to maintain diplomatic ties with Palestine and reiterates support for a two-state solution. In contrast, Israel outlawed Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in 2023 for its role in the 2008 Mumbai attacks. At the time, Israel's Ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, said he hoped New Delhi would soon designate Hamas as a terrorist outfit, revealing that intelligence on Hamas activities had been shared with the Modi government. When questioned about Hamas in Parliament, India's Ministry of External Affairs responded by stating that designation of any organisation under terrorism laws is considered in accordance with the provisions of the Act by the relevant government departments.(With inputs from TOI, PTI)

‘Grassroots leader': Ex-CM died in crash

NEW DELHI: Seat 2D of the ill-fated Air India flight to London that crashed soon after take off from the Ahmedabad airport was occupied by the state's former chief minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vijay Rupani. For hours after that, his aides were searching for him, at the site of the crash and the hospital. The emergence of a survivor late in the afternoon raised everyone's hopes. But early in the evening , Union minister and his party colleague CR Paatil announced that Rupani , 68, did not survive the crash. Expressing grief, President Droupadi Murmu posted on X, 'The country has lost the former chief minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani Ji in the tragedy. I express my heartfelt condolences to his family and admirers .' Expressing his condolence, defence minister Rajnath Singh posted on X, 'Deeply pained by the tragic demise of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani ji in the unfortunate plane crash in Ahmedabad. He will be remembered as a grassroots leader who devoted his life for the development & welfare of his state. Condolences to his bereaved family.' 'The news of the demise of former Gujarat Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Shri Vijay Rupani ji in the unfortunate plane crash in Ahmedabad is extremely painful and shocking. This is an irreparable loss not only for Gujarat but also for Indian politics,' Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami posted on X. It was an abrupt end to a career that many thought still had a third act to come. The second act, of course, was the one that propelled Rupani into the national spotlight. As crowds began to swell outside Shri Kamalam, the party office in Gandhinagar, Rupani was named as the 16th chief minister of Gujarat, succeeding Anandiben Patel. Rupani had his work cut out. The Patidar agitation of 2015 had left an imprint on the state's polity as well as the social fabric; and Rupani, a Jain leader, was appointed to assuage the concerns of both the pro- and anti-reservation groups. The powerful Patidar community which was seeking inclusion in the state's OBC list had taken to the streets. Violence erupted across the state, and a change in leadership in the state was seen as a peace deal. 'He was not prone to making loud or controversial statements and true to his (Rashtriya Swayamsevak) Sangh training, he knew how to work silently behind the scenes. That itself was a key reason why the leadership chose him over Patel,' said a party colleague, speaking on condition of anonymity. Rupani, who was re-elected as CM in 2017, when the BJP won the assembly election, steered the state till his abrupt removal in 2021, also had the difficult task of mending fences with the Dalits after the ghastly attacks on individuals from the community in Una hit headlines. The pandemic that wreaked havoc across the globe in 2020 saw Gujarat hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons. The High Cout rapped the government for gaps in critical care facilities that saw the death toll in the state mount. The economic slowdown, also a consequence of the pandemic, also did not augur well for the government that was to face an election in 2022. All of that became his undoing. People close to Rupani said just as he had accepted his elevation with grace, he showed no resentment when the leadership informed him of his exit, along with his council of ministers, few months before the state went to the polls. The first act started in Burma, where Rupani was born into a trading family. Not long after, his family moved back to India. He studied at the Dharmendrasinhji Arts College and honed his ideology at the local Shakha run by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. He was, like many were at the time, a cricket enthusiast and a Kishore Kumar fan, and he dabbled in campus politics. He seemed set for a career in trading, but he found his calling in the stock market. A second party colleague recalled Rupani's association with the RSS and how he transformed from a reserved Sangh follower to an active student union member particularly during the Emergency, when he spent a year in jail. His political career began with the election to the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) in 1987 and he went on to become the mayor of Rajkot in 1996. Considered a protege of union home minister Amit Shah, the BJP's ace strategist, Rupani rose to the position of general secretary of the state unit and was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2006. In the state's politics he is credited for strengthening the party's hold in the Saurashtra region. A household name in Rajkot, the constituency he represented in the state assembly since 2014, Rupani raised eyebrows when he announced his retirement from electoral politics in November 2022, shortly after he was removed from the chief minister's post. His new role, he said, would be party work, and he spent the next few years working quietly behind the scenes, overseeing the party's work in Punjab and Chandigarh. Senior BJP leaders in Punjab said Rupani, who left Ludhiana on June 9 was first supposed to travel to England with his wife on June 1, but later deferred his visit and sent his wife to London, where their daughter resides. ' Finally, Rupani ji left for Gujraat on June 9, and informed all of us that he would be travelling to London on June 11. We can't believe that he is no more and was part of the ill fitted flight that crashed today' said senior vice president of the Punjab BJP unit, Subhash Sharma. (With inputs from Ravinder Vasudeva)

Karnataka Caste Census U-Turn Sparks Row; SDPI Terms Move a ‘Betrayal' of Backward Classes

Bengaluru: The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has launched a sharp attack on the Congress-led Karnataka government for its decision to scrap the caste census conducted in 2015, terming the move a 'betrayal' of the state's backward classes, Dalits, SC/STs, and minorities. The original survey, conducted by the Kempanna Commission, involved 1.6 lakh government officials and cost the exchequer ₹165 crore. Though the final report was submitted earlier this year, the government has now declared it unusable on grounds of 'inaccuracy' and 'outdated data.' Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has instead ordered a new caste census, to be completed in 90 days. Calling the explanation 'vague and unconvincing,' SDPI accused the Congress of succumbing to pressure from dominant caste leaders, particularly from the Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities, who, the party alleges, have no strong electoral loyalty to Congress. 'Those who stood with the Congress since its inception are now being ignored,' SDPI said, demanding a judicial inquiry into the failure of the previous survey and the immediate public release of the report. 'Public money and administrative resources are not meant for political experiments,' the party added, reaffirming its commitment to the cause of genuine social justice and transparency.
