The mushroom murder trial: Bizarre case of a woman accused of killing her ex-husband's relatives with beef wellington

A jury is now deliberating whether a woman in Australia is guilty of murdering three people and attempting to kill another by serving them a lunch laced with poisonous mushrooms.
Erin Patterson, 50, gave her estranged husband's parents and his aunt and uncle beef wellington at her home in July 2023. The next day all four guests were hospitalised with symptoms of death cap mushroom poisoning, and later three of them died.
Patterson was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder over the deaths, and is standing trial in a case that has gripped Australia and drawn international attention.
Here's what you need to know about the trial.
Who is Erin Patterson, and what is she accused of?
Patterson is a mother-of-two from the Victorian town of Leongatha, east of Melbourne.
She has been charged with murdering Don Patterson, Gail Patterson and Heather Wilkinson, and charged with the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson.
The defendant had also been charged with three counts of attempted murder relating to her husband Simon Patterson, but those charges were dropped on Tuesday, before the trial opened.
In Australia, murder carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, while attempted murder has a maximum 25-year sentence.
Patterson has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
What happened at the lunch?
On July 29, 2023, Patterson hosted her estranged husband's parents Don and Gail, as well as Gail's sister Heather Wilkinson and Heather's husband, church pastor Ian Wilkinson.
She had invited them all for lunch at her home two weeks prior. Patterson had also invited her husband, Simon, but he declined. The pair had been separated since 2015.
She served her guests beef wellington, which is a beef fillet wrapped in a mushroom paste and covered with pastry, with a side of mashed potato and green beans.
The day after the lunch, all four guests fell ill and went to hospital complaining of nausea and diarrhoea.
Within days, Don, Gail and Heather had died, while Ian Wilkinson survived after receiving an organ transplant.
What is the prosecution case?
Prosecutor Nanette Rogers opened her case at the beginning of May in Victoria's Supreme Court, and the jury heard from witnesses including Patterson's estranged husband Simon, the lone survivor Ian Wilkinson, as well as medical experts and Patterson herself.
The court heard that on the way to hospital, Heather told Simon she had been puzzled by Patterson eating from a plate that looked different to those she had given her guests.
"I noticed that Erin put her food on a different plate to us. Her plate had colours on it. I wondered why that was. I've puzzled about it since lunch," she said, according to the prosecution.
Simon told his aunt that Patterson might have run out of plates.
The prosecutor said Patterson had not eaten poisonous mushrooms, and had also not fed her children, then aged nine and 14, any leftovers from the lunch.
The prosecutor said she did not need to provide a motive for the killing, and the jury could make its finding without one.
"You might be wondering now why would the accused do this? What is the motive? You might still be wondering this at the end of this trial," Rogers said. "You do not have to be satisfied what the motive was or even that there was a motive."
What did Patterson say in her own defence?
In her testimony, Patterson admitted to foraging for mushrooms and using them in her meals. She acknowledged lying after the fatal lunch but denied knowingly serving toxic mushrooms. She described her attempts at dehydrating mushrooms as an 'experiment'.
In the final moments of her cross-examination, the chief prosecutor put three key accusations to Patterson: that she deliberately sourced death cap mushrooms, knowingly included them in the beef wellington and intended to kill her guests.
To all three, Patterson responded: 'Disagree.'
Prosecutors alleged that she had fabricated her foraging history, calling her a 'self-confessed liar' who had no supporting evidence such as books or messages about foraging, but her lawyers maintained that she was simply a mushroom enthusiast and 'a person of good character'.
Patterson's defence team has argued the poisoning was a 'terrible mistake', with her barrister Colin Mandy SC telling the jury that while the guests had been poisoned by mushrooms, it had been accidental.
"The defence case is what happened was a tragedy. A terrible accident," Mandy said. Her defence conceded Patterson had lied to police when she told them she had not foraged for wild mushrooms.
"She did forage for mushrooms. Just so that we make that clear, she denies that she ever deliberately sought out death cap mushrooms," Mandy said.
What has the judge said?
Supreme Court justice Christopher Beale, who has presided over the trial in the regional Victorian town of Morwell, instructed the jurors to discount lies Patteson admitted to telling, including about her own health.
'The issue is not whether she is in some sense responsible for the tragic consequences of the lunch, but whether the prosecution has proved beyond a reasonable doubt that she is criminally responsible,' he told the jury.
'Similarly, the fact that, on her own admission, Erin Patterson told lies and disposed of evidence must not cause you to be prejudiced against her,' he added. 'This is a court of law, not a court of morals.'
The jurors have been sent out to deliberate until they can reach a unanimous verdict.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation unlawfully sacked journalist Antoinette Lattouf after she shared a social media post criticising Israel 's war on Gaza, the Federal Court ruled. The court found the public broadcaster removed Ms Lattouf from air in December 2023 in part because of her political opinions, specifically those on the Israeli military action in the Palestinian territory. Justice Darryl Rangiah said that the ABC contravened the Fair Work Act and awarded Ms Lattouf A$70,000 (£33,400) in damages. He is yet to decide on additional penalties. The court dismissed the claim that Ms Lattouf, who is of Lebanese heritage, was fired due to her race or ethnic background. Ms Lattouf had been contracted as a fill-in presenter on ABC Radio Sydney 's Mornings programme. Just three days in – on 19 December – she reposted an Instagram story from Human Rights Watch alleging Israel had used starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza, a claim the Israeli government denied. She was removed from her role within hours. Justice Rangiah found the ABC management reacted to an "orchestrated campaign by pro-Israel lobbyists to have Lattouf taken off air" and acted hastily without identifying which policy she had violated or allowing her a chance to respond. He said the broadcaster's chief content officer at the time, Chris Oliver-Taylor, acted based on little more than a 'suspicion' that she had broken rules and was motivated by desire to "mitigate the anticipated deluge of complaints and criticism". "Within the hour, a decision was made that Lattouf would be taken off air," Justice Rangiah said, adding that the ABC senior staff were in a 'state of panic'. Criticising the ABC for failing to follow procedure, the judge pointed out that Ms Lattouf was neither warned nor provided an opportunity to defend herself. While the ABC contended that her contract had been paid in full and she was merely taken off air to protect its reputation, the judge rejected this defence. He clarified that Ms Lattouf had not been given a formal directive to avoid commentary on Israel's war on Gaza, only general advice to refrain from making controversial posts. The journalist's removal had sparked a national outcry and internal discontent at the ABC, raising concerns about political pressure and institutional support for culturally diverse staff. It had also led to a debate about editorial independence and freedom of expression within public broadcasting. Israel launched its ongoing war on Gaza after over 1,100 people were killed and 251 taken hostage during a Hamas assault on southern Israel in October 2023. Israeli forces have killed over 55,700 Palestinians so far, including 15,000 children, and left almost the entire population of nearly 2 million displaced from their homes and on the brink of starvation, according to the Hamas-run health ministry and UN agencies. Speaking outside court, Ms Lattouf said she had been 'punished for political opinion'. 'Deliberately starving and killing children is a war crime,' she said. 'Today, the court has found that punishing someone for sharing facts about these war crimes is also illegal.' The ABC, which reportedly spent A$1m (£733,998) defending the case, issued a public apology after the ruling. Its new managing director, Hugh Marks, said the matter 'was not handled in line with our values and expectations'. 'We also let down our staff and audiences and this failure has caused understandable concern among the public and inside the organisation,' he said. He acknowledged concerns over the broadcaster's independence and announced that it had reviewed and replaced its internal guidelines for social media use. 'Any undue influence or pressure on ABC management or any of its employees must always be guarded against,' Mr Marks said. Commenting on the case, legal expert Chris Merritt called the judgment a 'slap in the face' for the ABC leadership and criticised the organisation's internal processes as 'amateurish'. Once a dismissal claim was raised under Australia's Fair Work Act, he told Sky News, the onus was on the employer to prove it was lawful, something the ABC failed to do convincingly. The matter escalated to the Federal Court after a mediation attempt between Ms Lattouf and the ABC failed at the Fair Work Commission earlier this year.

Dramatic footage has captured the moment police used road spikes to apprehend the 17-year-old driver of an allegedly stolen taxi during a high-speed chase. Queensland Police allege the teenager broke into multiple Cairns homes across Edmonton, Mount Sheridan and Woree in the early hours of Monday morning. The Mooroobool boy, who police said is a well-known youth offender, is alleged to have first stolen a Mitsubishi Outlander from a Savage Close address about 11.15am. He allegedly abandoned that vehicle after driving over police spikes on Links Drive before he stole a nearby Toyota Camry taxi after forcibly removing its driver. The 59-year-old taxi driver suffered a minor back injury and was taken to Cairns Hospital for treatment. The teenager then allegedly drove the taxi dangerously around Cairns before hitting a second set of road spikes on nearby Mayers Street at around 11.35am. In footage obtained by Seven News, an officer could be seen hiding behind a boat parked on a suburban road before he threw the spikes across both lanes. The teenager attempted to avoid the spikes, but clipped the edge and crashed into a parked Hyundai, sending the unoccupied vehicle careening out of frame of the camera. The officer who deployed the spikes could then be heard repeatedly yelling for the boy to get out of the vehicle. Moments later, the teenager exited the crumpled vehicle and was tackled to the ground by the officer, and a struggle ensues before he restrained him. 'Get your f***-ing hands behind your back c***,' the officer shouted. 'Do not f***ing move.' A second officer arrived to assist, and the teenager was placed under arrest as emergency vehicles converged on the scene. The 17-year-old was charged with two counts each of attempted enter dwelling with intent, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a vehicle whilst adversely affected and speeding more than 40km/h and one count of robbery. He was refused bail and appeared in Cairns Children's Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to unlawful entry, unlawful use of motor vehicle, dangerous driving while intoxicated and attempted unlawful entry, the Courier-Mail reported. A local businesswoman Gillian Tap claimed her daughter was almost hit by the runaway taxi when it ran a red light. 'If she was seconds quicker she could have been killed. She was shaken up from it, this is just terrible,' she said. The boy is expected to be sentenced for non-indictable offences on July 15 while more serious offences will be dealt with by way of committal mention. No application for bail was made. He was treated at Cairns Hospital for a minor head injury.

Karmelo Anthony, the teen who admitted to stabbing and killing a fellow high school athlete at a track meet in Texas, has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge. Austin Metcalf, 17, bled out in his brother's arms after a then-17-year-old Anthony attacked him at the David Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco on April 2. Anthony, now 18, insisted he was acting in self-defense when he killed Metcalf, however, he's never explained why he had a weapon at an event on school property. However, on Tuesday, he was formally charged by a grand jury in the crime that has drawn national attention over race and privilege. 'I fully believe that justice will be served for Austin Metcalf,' his father Jeff told of the indictment. 'I look forward to the forthcoming trial. But it will never bring my son back.' Police have said the incident stemmed from Metcalf asking Anthony to leave his team tent since he didn't go to the same school. It comes weeks after the local district attorney began presenting evidence to a grand jury, asking jurors to uphold the first-degree murder count local cops originally brought against the teen. 'With that indictment, the case now moves formally into the court system. We know this case has struck a deep nerve - here in Collin County and beyond,' Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in a press release on Tuesday afternoon. 'That's understandable. When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core.' Grand jury proceedings are held behind closed doors, and unlike most court hearings, are not open to the public. Anthony's advisor Dominque Alexander told that his defense attorney was able to present a packet with evidence the suspect wanted the jurors to see. Anthony remains under house arrest at a secret location after persuading a judge that his safety was at risk following threats he received while living in a gated community. He spent nearly two weeks in jail before a judge agreed to reduce his bond, allowing him to await trial under house arrest.
