Rafael Devers is gone. Wilyer Abreu is back. How will the Red Sox divide up the playing time?
SAN FRANCISCO — Rafael Devers stepped to the plate in the first inning at Oracle Park on Friday, his first game against his former team, the Boston Red Sox.
It had been five days since a shocking trade between the Red Sox and Giants rocked the baseball world. Devers, wearing No. 16 and donning San Francisco's orange and black, walked the batter's box as the crowd rose for a standing ovation. In the opposing dugout, Red Sox manager Alex Cora nodded his head to his longtime former player.

Devers took his customary deep sigh at the plate before digging in. He grounded out on one pitch in the first of five hitless at-bats during a back-and-forth affair, one which the Red Sox held on to win 7-5 over the Giants. It marked Boston's eighth win in its last nine games.
'It's not surreal, just weird, you know,' Cora said of seeing Devers on the other side after nine years in Boston. 'But like I said, we as an organization, we made a decision, he's with the Giants. And like he said a few days ago, he has a job to do. We got a job to do.'

There was a bit of irony in the fact that the Red Sox had their best offensive game since trading Devers in their first matchup since his departure. The Red Sox had scored a total of five runs across their previous three games in Seattle, with some natural questions about what losing Devers' bat might mean for the team's offense.
Those questions were quieted on Friday as the Red Sox posted seven runs on 11 hits and scored in five straight innings after falling behind 3-0 in the second inning.
'Now somebody else has to step up,' Cora said of the team's offensive identity without Devers. 'We might have to play a little bit of small ball, especially in places like this and places like Seattle. I do believe, athletic-wise, we're in a good spot. Obviously, we've got a bunch of kids that are learning how to play in the big leagues, and it's not that easy. But we're very pleased with the at-bats.'
Ceddanne Rafaela went 3-for-4 with a go-ahead homer in the sixth inning and finished a triple shy of the cycle, while David Hamilton's two-run homer in the third put the Red Sox on the board.
Devers' bat provided a consistent power threat, but the Red Sox showed Friday that they can produce without him.
Wilyer Abreu, in his first game back after 10 days on the injury list with an oblique strain, collected two hits and drove in a run in the win.
With Abreu back, the Red Sox optioned Kristian Campbell to Triple-A Worcester.
In 67 games, Campbell hit .223 with a .664 OPS. He burst onto the scene in April, winning Rookie of the Month before hitting a wall in May and struggling to find consistency. Since the start of May, he'd hit just .159 with a .465 OPS.
Campbell had started 54 of his 67 games at second base, but racked up minus-14 Defensive Runs Saved, the worst in the majors. In Worcester on Friday, Campbell continued to take grounders in pre-game work at first base.

'I think it was a good time for him to reset, to be honest with you,' Cora said before the game. 'Go down there and work on a few things that we have seen the last few weeks that we were not doing here.
'To be able to play the (first base) position, that'll be important,' Cora added. 'Obviously, with time, we're going to have to make some more decisions with the roster. Him playing first base is going to help us.'
With Campbell having a majority of the reps at second recently, Cora said Hamilton will see more playing time at the spot. He also noted rookie Marcelo Mayer, who has taken over third base since Alex Bregman went on the injury list May 24, could see time at second, particularly when Bregman returns from the IL.
Bregman isn't close to returning, but continuing to ramp up his running progression.
Bregman and Masataka Yoshida worked out at Boston College this week as Fenway Park prepares to host a series of concerts this weekend. Yoshida has been building up arm strength since offseason shoulder surgery, but with the DH spot now open, Cora said there's less of a need for Yoshida to fully strengthen his throwing arm to play the outfield and that he could move into the DH role once he completes a rehab assignment. Yoshida isn't quite ready to begin a rehab assignment, but Cora said that he will be soon.
Meanwhile, by optioning Campbell to Triple A, the Red Sox gave a vote of confidence to Roman Anthony, who entered the game with two hits since his promotion on June 9. Anthony went 1-for-4 on Friday and drove in a run.
Cora noted with Abreu returning to man right field, a spot where he won the Gold Glove last season, Anthony will see time at all three outfield spots. Anthony had only played right field since his promotion. On Friday, he served as the designated hitter.

Without Devers at DH and with Yoshida still a ways from returning, the club will rotate players through the DH spot.
Cora has mixed and matched the roster to maximize the pieces, and on Friday, in their fourth game of the post-Devers era, the offense looked more than capable.

UConn women's basketball transfer Kayleigh Heckel selected to Team USA for U19 FIBA World Cup
UConn women's basketball sophomore Kayleigh Heckel was named to the final 12-player Team USA roster that will compete in the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup this summer, marking her first selection to a World Cup team. Heckel, a 5-foot-9 guard from Port Chester, New York, played her freshman season at USC and signed with the Huskies out of the transfer portal on May 26. She previously competed for USA Basketball in the 2024 U18 FIBA AmeriCup, where she won a gold medal alongside UConn sophomore Sarah Strong. Heckel was the second-leading scorer for the U.S. in the AmeriCup averaging 12.8 points in 21.2 minute per game plus 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Advertisement The U19 World Cup runs from July 12-20 in Brno, Czech Republic, where Team USA will look to bring home a fourth consecutive gold medal and 11th all-time in the event. The team begins group play against South Korea on July 12, and it will also face off against Israel and Hungary in Group A to advance to the knockout rounds. The U.S. has reached at least the championship game in 10 straight U19 World Cups dating back to 2005, and it has only lost once during that stretch, to Russia in 2017. Heckel is one of four players on the World Cup roster with collegiate experience alongside Texas guard Jordan Lee, Florida guard Alivia McGill and former UCLA forward Zania Socka-Nguemen, who transferred to Indiana this offseason. Lee and McGill also played with Heckel at the U18 AmeriCup. Indiana coach Teri Moren will lead the squad with Notre Dame coach Niele Ivey and South Florida coach Jose Fernandez serving as assistants. Heckel was the No. 13 prospect in the Class of 2025, and averaged 6.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 17 minutes per game during her freshman season at USC. She is just the fifth player UConn has signed out of the transfer portal since it was established in 2019, and her signing also marked the first time that coach Geno Auriemma added multiple transfers in a single offseason during the portal era. Former Wisconsin forward Serah Williams also signed with the Huskies as they look to defend their NCAA Championship in 2025-26.

Cowboys' Top 5 All-Time Free Agents
Cowboys' Top 5 All-Time Free Agents originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Two ways to look at Dallas Cowboys' free agency this offseason: 1. The bad: While two-time Pro Bowl performer Jaire Alexander signed with the Baltimore Ravens, the Cowboys settled for the Green Bay Packers' "other" cornerback — Robert Rochell — who has bounced around five teams in four seasons. Advertisement 2. The good: Their class is an improvement over 2024, which was highlighted by underwhelming linebacker Eddie Kendricks. Relatively speaking, Jerry and Stephen Jones were proactive and aggressive in this year's free agency. The Cowboys signed much-needed help at pass rusher with Dante Fowler Jr. and running back with Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams. Those moves, of course, supplemented trades for No. 2 receiver George Pickens and backup quarterback Joe Milton. We're not suggesting a class also aided by defensive tackle Solomon Thomas and receiver Parris Campbell will be Dallas' best ever, but it's a step in the right direction of positive player acquisition. Unless we're missing something, however, none of the signees will crack the list of the Cowboys' Top 5 all-time free-agent signings: Advertisement 5. Leonard Davis, 2007 – Right guard started all 16 games, made the Pro Bowl, second-team All-Pro and helped a record-setting offense lead Dallas to a 13-3 record before making two more Pro Bowls. 4. Terrell Owens, 2006 – Despite an icy relationship with Bill Parcells, his production on the field was undeniable to the tune of three 1,000-yard receiving seasons and double-digit touchdowns. 3. Jay Novacek, 1990 – A converted H-back from the Arizona Cardinals, the "Plan B free agent'' made five Pro Bowls and won three Super Bowls as Troy Aikman's security blanket. 2. Nate Newton, 1986 – Signed after his time as a Tampa Bay Bandit when the USFL folded, he battled his weight and finally arrived to help anchor one of the best offensive lines in NFL history while making six Pro Bowls, winning three Super Bowl rings and annually paving the way for all-time leading rusher Emmitt Smith. Advertisement 1. Deion Sanders, 1995 – If you can't beat 'em, steal 'em. After losing to him and the San Francisco 49ers in the '94 NFC Championship Game, the Cowboys signed him and won the ensuing Super Bowl as he blanketed receivers, returned punts and even caught passes on offense. In five years in Dallas he lived up to the hype, making four Pro Bowls, recording 14 interceptions and scoring eight touchdowns on his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Aaron Rodgers Reportedly Moved Steelers To Make Cowboys George Pickens Trade
Aaron Rodgers Reportedly Moved Steelers To Make Cowboys George Pickens Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - Turns out that because Aaron Rodgers prefers throwing passes to DK Metcalf, he helped have George Pickens thrown out of Pittsburgh and into the waiting arms of the Dallas Cowboys. Advertisement According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers felt pressured to trade Pickens because of the arrival of Rodgers and potential locker room tension that would bring. The Cowboys traded for Pickens to make him Dak Prescott's No. 2 receiver behind CeeDee Lamb. 'The Steelers moved on from Pickens for a few reasons,' Fowler writes. 'His maturity issues were well-known within Pittsburgh's locker room and front office. So, the Steelers made the evaluation that Pickens and Rodgers probably would not hit it off.' Given his recent history of damaging team chemistry - last year he skipped New York Jets' minicamp to vacation in Egypt - it's ironic the Steelers felt it necessary to get rid of trouble-maker under the guise of smoothing the waters for Rodgers. Pickens' history of on-field fights and tardy attendance to team functions have been well documented. He may be just 24 years old, but the character concerns were real, and Mike Tomlin, among the sternest head coaches around, had had enough. Advertisement Pickens is entering a contract year, and all indications show that he's on the straight and narrow in Dallas so far. Meanwhile, the 41-year-old Rodgers likely knows he's near the end of the road, so maybe he could clean up his frequent controversies and attention-seeking ploys in search of a successful last ride. While it's unclear whether Rodgers proactively demanded Pickens be moved before he signed as a free agent, it's more than plausible.
