England tour is exam for Gill, good batting key to good captaincy: Karim
New Delhi, Jun 1 (PTI) The upcoming England tour will be an exam for new Test leader Shubman Gill and his success as captain may depend on his own batting performance, reckons former India selector Saba Karim.
India kick-started a new era in Test cricket with the appointment of Gill as captain following retirements of stalwarts such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin in quick succession.
Gill is a gifted player but he is yet to flourish as a Test batter, managing just 1,893 runs in 32 Tests at an average just under 32, with four centuries.
While his technique is compact and batting has flair, he's yet to deliver the kind of consistent, match-winning performances that mark elite Test batters. Yet, Saba Karim remains confident.
"This is an examination for him. I am sure he's ready and up for it," Karim told PTI Videos on the sidelines of FIT India: Sunday on Cycle event on Sunday.
"This is a big opportunity for him as a player. He needs to perform with the bat there, if he is able to do so then automatically his captaincy will also flourish," said Karim, suggesting that success in one area will boost confidence in the other.
The former wicket-keeper batter however, sees the bigger picture. He acknowledged the balance in the current Indian squad, especially the mix of young blood and experienced names.
"I do expect some good results from this young Indian side. The matches will really competitive and I think they are ready for it," he added.
Karim also praised Karun Nair for his double hundred against England Lions and named Sai Sudharsan as the batter to watch out for alongside Nair in the series.
"Karun (Nair) played well, he now has experience. Sai seems to have grown in stature as an all-format cricketer. He is gaining experience now, I am excited to see how this combination does in England."
In the bowling department, India will miss seasoned Mohammad Shami, who remains out due to fitness concerns. Punjab pacer Arshdeep Singh is part of the squad and is expected to make an impact.
"He (Arshdeep) is a very talented seamer, the previous experience in England will help him and the conditions as well team had to look beyond Shami and I think they picked the right guy, excited to see him in action as well," he said.
Karim was the chief guest at the 25th edition of the Fit India Sunday cycle event.
"Such initiatives are crucial in inspiring people to make fitness a priority and build a stronger, healthier nation. It's great to see widespread community involvement and enthusiasm," he concluded.

KL Rahul gets ready for the long English summer with measured century in Northamption for India A vs England Lions
Briefly after the drinks break in the post-lunch session, KL Rahul brought up a patient 102-ball half century for India A against England Lions. In the moments following that, there was a rare loss of focus that saw him get beaten on the outside edge in the channel by George Hill. But before the next ball, he took a walk down the pitch, tapped it a few times, and quickly went back to middling a perfect forward defensive stroke, followed by carefully seeing one through to the keeper's gloves… he reset. Then he finished the over with another gorgeous cover drive for four. In those few moments, it was evident that Rahul has switched on his red-ball mode. After the exertions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where his Delhi Capitals failed to qualify for the playoffs, he made his way to England early to get some batting time under his belt. And having to face Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue – both in England's squad for the Test series – Rahul went about his business with a certain assurance that will bring calm to an inexperienced Indian batting unit. A 168-ball 116 in Northampton sets him up nicely for the long summer ahead. If there were any doubts over where Rahul is likely to bat in the five-match Test series, the sight of him opening with Yashasvi Jaiswal ought to have put those to rest. It is the combination that started the series Down Under, and with Rohit Sharma now not in the picture, looks set to be the first-choice again, especially with Abhimanyu Easwaran failing in two of his three innings so far. Rahul was off to a watchful start with Woakes getting the ball to talk under overcast skies on a green top. The allrounder was the Lions' best bowler by some distance, and he accounted for Jaiswal early, with one that shaped back in late from a fuller length. Jaiswal signalled that the ball was shaping past the leg stump, but was left to do the disappointed-Pakistan-fan meme pose as he saw the finger raised. There was a reprieve for Easwaran off the very first ball, one shaping away, the outside edge was dropped at second slip. But his stay wasn't long either, as he was trapped in front by Woakes, this one straightened more subtly and looked plumb. Woakes' superb first spell read 6-3-8-2. Then, Karun Nair and Rahul went about constructing the first of two big partnerships for the visitors, a 139-ball 86. After lunch, Woakes returned to the attack, and this time, he wasn't as frugal. When he erred slightly shorter on Rahul's hips, the opener swivel-pulled for a four. When he was fuller and outside off, Nair flayed one over point. The pacer still got the odd ball to trouble the Indian duo – like one in the 27th over that squared up Rahul and brought out a big LBW appeal – but that was the exception rather than the norm. Rahul's shot to go from 40 to 44 was a thing of beauty as he played the perfect textbook cover off Tongue, a shot that he played to good effect right through his knock, meeting the ball right underneath his eyelines. After his half century, he moved through the gears as well. His first came off 50 off 102 balls, while he scored the next 51 runs off just 49 balls. The driving and cutting were on point, and when he was tested with short balls, he rolled his wrists over nicely to avoid falling for the Lions' trap. There was one shaky moment off Hill when the ball flew in that gap between wicketkeeper and slip for what otherwise would have been a regulation catch with a regulation slip cordon that the Lions had in place previously. Largely, it was a serene day out for the classy opener. After Woakes accounted for Nair with one that nipped back in the next ball from a good length, Dhruv Jurel joined Rahul for a 121-run stand off 159 balls. Jurel came out playing his shots, reaching a half-century off 66 balls. Unlike Rahul, though, his momentum got halted after the landmark, and he was bowled by a fine delivery by Hill that nipped back in from good length. Hill then ended Rahul's stay. KL Rahul gained the requisite confidence and much-needed game time ahead of the upcoming five-Test series with a classy hundred for India A against a quality England Lions attack that featured seasoned pacer Chris Woakes. Rahul's flawless 116 off 168 balls - his 19th first-class hundred - was complemented by Dhruv Jurel 's 52 off 87 balls, his third successive half-century, as India A reached 319 for 7 in 83 overs on a rain-hit opening day. At stumps, Tanush Kotian (5) and Anshul Kamboj (1) were at the crease. The Lions' bowling attack, with comeback man Chris Woakes (3/50 in 17 overs) hitting the straps straightaway in a fine opening spell in conditions aiding seam and swing, posed its own set of challenges, but Rahul had an answer to every probing question thrown at him by the English speedster. The other English seamer Josh Tongue, who primarily bowls inswing with an open chested action, was handled with aplomb by the Bengaluru man, who hit 15 fours and a straight six down the ground off spinner Farhan Ahmed 's bowling. Rahul opening the innings was a clear indication that he, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, is likely to face the new ball in the opening Test at Leeds from June 20. The manner in which Rahul handled Woakes' first spell was an education. He was right behind the ball and when he played square off the wicket, he executed his strokes as late as possible. His cover drive was regal and square cut was equally delicious. The kneeling cover drive was a picture-perfect stroke, and during the post-tea session, it appeared as if Rahul was having an extended net session - such was the ease with which he batted. There was cloud cover during the first session and Woakes took full advantage of the condition by dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal, who didn't seem happy with the lbw decision as he felt that the delivery was missing leg-stump. Abhimanyu Easwaran (11) could have been dismissed off the very first ball as he loosely dangled his bat at an outswinger from Woakes, only to be dropped at second slip. However, Woakes eventually got him in his first spell with a delivery that straightened after pitching and trapped him plumb in front. Easwaran, who has once again been handed the India A captaincy, has now failed to deliver in all first innings of India A's first-class matches in Australia and England. He couldn't cross 20 in the four innings during the 'A' Tests in Australia, and in England, on pitches with some assistance for bowlers in Canterbury and now Northampton, he looked short on both technique and temperament to counter quality bowling. Karun Nair (40) again looked good in the post lunch session when the sun was out and had a 86-run third wicket stand with Rahul before the former became Woakes' third victim. Jurel, whose batting is very easy to the eye, added 121 runs for the fourth wicket with Rahul and had seven fours in his knock. With scores of 94, 53 not out and 52, Jurel is not only a worthy understudy to Pant but also presents the team management with an option of a specialist No. 6 batter if need be.
