Sims Limited and Alter Steel Collaborate to Help Grow Queensland's Clean Steel Industry
Under the terms of the MOU, it is proposed that Sims would exclusively supply up to 550,000 tonnes of ferrous scrap annually, manage Alter Steel's scrap inventory on a just-in-time basis, and provide access to port and rail infrastructure via the staged development of Sims' Pinkenba site. Sims' Pinkenba site is located approximately 1km from the location of Alter's proposed EAF on Tingira Street. The parties will use the MOU as the framework for negotiating a binding agreement.
With growing pressure to cut emissions and reduce reliance on imports, Alter Steel is investing over $750 million to build a new steel mill at Pinkenba. The facility plans to turn local scrap into 500,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel each year, keeping manufacturing in Australia and supplying Queensland and national projects with lower carbon material.
Alter Steel's Pinkenba mill is expected to create over 600 construction jobs and more than 220 permanent skilled positions across steelmaking, trades, engineering and logistics once operational. The company has recently achieved several key milestones, including conditional development approval for the site and a supplier agreement with global technology and equipment partner Danieli.
Sims' Pinkenba investment represents a significant development for its Australia and New Zealand operations and strategy. Plans are focused on the staged development of the site into a world-class strategic logistics and metal recycling hub. The site will enable more efficient scrap movement by significantly transitioning from road-based transport to shipping and potentially rail. This transformation is expected to unlock substantial operational efficiencies while also supporting the future feedstock needs of Alter Steel as well as other steelmakers in Australia and New Zealand, continuing to position Sims as a leading supplier of high-quality recycled raw materials.
"This collaboration with Sims completes the supply chain to deliver the cleanest steel in Australia, right here in Queensland," said Grant Johnston, Managing Director of Alter Steel. "Sims is a global leader in metal recycling, and we're proud to have them alongside us on this project. Together, we'll transform local scrap into high value steel, cut emissions, and keep manufacturing onshore. Construction is planned to commence in 2026, with operations beginning in 2028. This project positions Queensland at the forefront of Australia's low carbon steel industry."
Stephen Mikkelsen, chief executive officer and managing director of Sims, commented: "This MOU represents a strategic milestone for Sims. It reinforces our position as a key partner to Australia and New Zealand's growing domestic steel sector. The MOU provides a potential pathway to long-term volume certainty for both parties, supported by efficient logistics through the Pinkenba hub. It also builds on our core strengths of providing responsible, sustainable operations, scale, material quality, technology, and diverse scrap sourcing, supported by a network of collection sites with access to a wide range of transport options. We are very excited to work with Alter, supporting their ambitions in manufacturing low-emission steel."
About Alter Steel
Alter Steel is backed by Westview Group, a privately owned Australian industrial group employing over 750 staff across steel, technology and manufacturing. Alter's proposed Electric Arc Furnace at Pinkenba is expected to see an investment of more than $750 million in Queensland and would produce up to 500,000 tonnes per annum of high-quality, low emissions reinforcing steel once operational. This reinforcing steel would be supplied as a lower carbon option to the construction sector across Queensland and Australia for the building of new infrastructure like roads, buildings and sports stadiums. It is anticipated that the project would create approximately 600 jobs during construction and more than 220 permanent high-skilled positions once operational.

Hidden way Aussies are cutting $20,000 from their tax bill every year
For most Aussies, tax isn't just a cost - it's often their single biggest expense. Particularly if you're earning a decent income, you're likely handing over tens of thousands of dollars to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) each year. That's more than most people's mortgage, school fees, or even their annual holiday budget. This can be super frustrating. You're not doing anything wrong, you're just following the system. RELATED Expert's secret to retire early 'without earning more money' Little-known Centrelink perk offers Australian students free flights Massive queue exposes urgent Australian job trend as numbers hit record levels But the thing most people don't realise is that by being smart and using the rules to your advantage, there are legal ways you can claw back $20,000 or more every year in tax. And the best part is that you can do it without cutting a single dollar from your spending or lifestyle. Just to be clear, this isn't about tax dodges, claiming your work laptop, or a few extra kilometres in your car logbook. This is about understanding how the tax system actually works - and then using the right tactics to make it work for problem: earning more means keeping less In Australia, we work under what's called a 'progressive' tax system. This means that the more money you earn, the more tax you pay per dollar. If you're on a solid income, getting into the six-figure territory, you're probably handing over somewhere between $20,000 and $50,000 (or more) each year in tax. But the kicker is that as you work harder, that number gets bigger, and fast. Promotions, bonuses, or pay bumps can push you into the higher brackets where nearly half of every new dollar you earn disappears in tax. The thing that most people miss is that you don't just have to cop it. With the right strategy, you can reduce your tax burn and grow your money at the same time. Don't just earn more (structure smarter) There's no single silver bullet here, but there is a system smart people are using to reduce tax while building serious financial momentum. It's a combination of three high-impact moves; negative gearing, debt recycling, and tax effective investing. None of these tactics are secrets, and they're all fully in line with the ATO's rules. But what's less commonly understood is how they can work together to completely reshape your financial future. Negative gearing Negative gearing has copped its fair share of political heat. But when done right, it's a smart tool - not a get-rich-quick scheme. Negative gearing works when you borrow money to acquire an investment (like property or even shares) and the expenses of your investment (like interest on a loan) are more than the income your investment generates. When this happens, you create a tax deductible loss that reduces your taxable income earned today, and your tax bill today. Over time, the value of your asset or investment grows, and this growth can be used to build your wealth over time. If you're thinking about negative gearing, it's important you choose quality investments that actually grow over time. And importantly, you need to be smart with your cashflow planning and make sure you don't overextend. The goal isn't to lose money, it's to bring forward tax savings while growing serious wealth over the years ahead. Debt recycling If you own a home and you're paying down your mortgage in the standard way outlined by the banks, you're sitting on a huge financial opportunity. Debt recycling is a strategy that gradually converts your non-deductible home loan into tax deductible investment debt. Through this strategy, you're using the equity in your home to invest, generally into income producing assets like shares. When you do this, this portion of your mortgage becomes tax deductible. With this strategy, you're paying down and reducing your non tax deductible mortgage debt, and 'replacing' it with tax deductible debt. And the opportunity here is huge. Based on Australia's average mortgage size of $660,000 and an interest rate of 6 per cent, this has the ability to generate $39,600 in tax deductions. Over time, you're shrinking the bad debt on your mortgage while growing an investment portfolio that cuts your tax bill and builds passive income at the same time. This strategy is one of my favourites. Tax effective investing Most people that invest do it all by owning their investments in their own name - but that's not always the smartest move, particularly if your income is in the higher tax brackets. Investing through tax structures like family trusts, investment bonds, companies, and even superannuation can all allow you to cut the tax on your investment income while maintaining full control over your investments. Depending on your situation, these structures can also allow you to spread income across multiple people, cap tax on investment returns, or defer tax entirely. For example, investing through an investment bond will cap the total tax paid at 30 per cent, and eliminate tax on capital gains when you hold your investments for ten years or more. That alone can make a huge difference to your investing bottom line over time. Worth calling out that tax structures are complex, and probably not the sort of thing you want to DIY. If you're thinking about going down this path, you should talk to an expert to get your structure right and make sure it fits with your lifestyle and goals. This isn't a one-size-fits-all approach. The wrap Individually, these three tax-saving strategies can save you money. But when used together, they can easily cut your tax bill by $20,000 or more each year - which is money you can then reinvest to grow your money faster. Over a decade, that's a solid six figure difference in your position, not to mention the extra growth you get on the money. And the kicker here is that you don't need to earn an extra dollar more to get there. This is simply about using what you already have more effectively. Tax is high in Australia, but if you aren't using the tools you have available to you, you're playing the game with one hand tied behind your back. The people cutting their tax bills and using the money to get ahead faster aren't lucky - they're better informed, and have decided to play smarter. Is Cleveland-Cliffs Stock a No-Brainer Steel Play?
Key Points Cleveland-Cliffs is one of the largest steel mills in North America. The company's production is largely centered around blast furnaces. Cleveland-Cliffs is something of a boom-or-bust investment. 10 stocks we like better than Cleveland-Cliffs › Not too long ago, Cleveland-Cliffs (NYSE: CLF) didn't make steel -- it was just a supplier to the steel industry. Then a series of huge acquisitions changed the story. Now Cleveland-Cliffs is one of the largest and most important steel makers in North America. But is that enough to make it a no-brainer steel play? It depends on what you're looking for. What does Cleveland-Cliffs do? At this point, Cleveland-Cliffs is a vertically integrated steel maker. That means it owns steel mills, but it also owns the key inputs it requires to make steel, like iron ore. Although the company makes some fabricated and specialized products out of its steel, most of its production is really just commodity-based. So steel prices have a big effect on the top and bottom lines. The real key here, however, is that Cleveland-Cliffs' production is centered around blast furnaces. This is an older steel-making technology that involves high operating costs. When demand is strong and steel prices are high, Cleveland-Cliffs can have robust earnings results. However, when utilization rates fall and steel prices are low, the company can bleed red ink. Sometimes the losses are pretty painful to live through. Peers like Nucor (NYSE: NUE) are centered around electric-arc mini-mills, a newer steel-making technology. To simplify things, Nucor's manufacturing assets can be ramped up and down more easily to adjust for changes in demand and steel prices. As such, it tends to have stronger margins through the entire steel cycle. Often Nucor will just have weaker earnings at a time when Cleveland-Cliffs will be losing money. For those looking to invest in the steel industry for the long term, Nucor is likely to be the better investment choice. Notably, Nucor is a Dividend King, with over five decades of annual dividend hikes speaking to its more consistent financial results. Playing the swings in a cyclical industry That said, steel is a cyclical business. If you're looking to buy Nucor for the long term, now could be a good time to jump aboard, because the sector is a bit out of favor at the moment. But what if you don't actually want to own a steel stock for the long term? The caveat here is that trying to time market swings isn't the best idea for most investors. It's high-risk, and a bad call can leave you with a losing investment. Yet, the steel industry does reliably go through boom and bust cycles. Buying in the bust phase, as suggested above with Nucor, can get you in the door when steel stocks are cheap. If you do that with Cleveland-Cliffs, you'd set yourself up for a larger rebound because of the boom-and-bust nature of its earnings. Indeed, when the steel market rebounds, Wall Street is likely to reward Cleveland-Cliffs' stock more than Nucor's -- at least, over the short term. The next bust will likely be more punishing for Cleveland-Cliffs' business than it will be for Nucor's, which will likely lead to a steeper drop when the steel industry shifts gears again. In other words, you'll want to get out of Cleveland-Cliffs before the drop if you're trying to time the steel cycle. Is Cleveland-Cliffs stock a no-brainer steel play? Cleveland-Cliffs is not a no-brainer investment. In fact, it requires a lot of brain power, because you need to understand the often volatile nature of its business and how that's affected by the broader trends in the steel industry. If you prefer simple investments that you buy and hold for the long term, Nucor will be a better steel choice. But if you like trading, you may prefer to ride the ups and downs in Cleveland-Cliffs' business. Just go in with an understanding of the risks you're taking on.
