Moody backs Australia to defend WTC mace, but issues SAs 'genuine threat' warning
New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): Former cricketer Tom Moody has backed Australia to pip South Africa in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, which is slated to kick off on Wednesday at Lord's, but cautioned his former side to be wary of Marco Jansen, who will be a "genuine threat."
Australia is on the cusp of scripting another milestone. If the Baggy Greens trounce the Proteas, they will become the first team to defend the WTC mace successfully.
The Pat Cummins-led side has exuded its winning pedigree with famous triumphs in the WTC 2023 final at The Oval and the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. Moody expects Australia to embrace the challenge and prosper in the high-stakes fixture.
"The Australians have built that reputation through consistent success in major tournaments. When it comes to ICC events, Australia somehow elevates their game to another level as a team. They genuinely embrace the challenges of tournament cricket and thrive under the pressure of these high-stakes matches," Moody said on Star Sports.
"It's also about confidence. Historically, many of their players have won multiple ICC tournaments, and they've grown up watching previous generations achieve the same success. That winning mentality is ingrained in them," he added.
While Moody sees Australia as on-paper favourites, he identified South Africa's two quicks who can make the defending champions toil hard for runs. Apart from Kagiso Rabada, who has delivered repeatedly, Moody sees the lanky quick Jansen to pose a genuine threat to Australia.
"You can never discount Rabada and especially Jansen. At nearly seven feet tall, Marco Jansen brings height, bounce, and new-ball swing - he'll be a genuine threat. And Rabada? We know his Test pedigree - he's delivered repeatedly," he said.
Despite being aware of the menace South Africa can pose, Moody still backed Australia, considering the experience of its pace express mainstays, captain Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.
"That said, I'd still back Australia here - not out of bias, but experience. With Hazlewood, Cummins, and Starc - three battle-hardened pacers who've played multiple Ashes in England - they know Lord's intimately. And let's not forget Nathan Lyon's perfect supporting role," he added. (ANI)

Bengaluru: Days after the horrific stampede outside the city's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, in which 11 people were killed and 75 injured, the secretary and treasurer of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) stepped down, taking moral responsibility for the disaster. Secretary A Shankar and treasurer AE Jairam tendered their resignations late Friday to association president Raghuram Bhat. On Saturday, Shankar and Jairam issued a joint press statement confirming their decision. "Due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days, though our role was very limited, we are taking moral responsibility. We have submitted our resignations from our respective posts as secretary and treasurer of KSCA," the statement read. At the emergency managing committee meeting on Saturday, which a majority of members opted to attend virtually, the duo's resignation was accepted. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Bhat, a former India spinner, explained: "The committee acknowledged the contribution of the secretary and treasurer and accepted their resignation." Asked if the rest of the office-bearers would also resign, Bhat said: "The committee will not be dissolved as of now. We are offering our full support to the investigating authorities." While KSCA polls are scheduled for Oct, the association has to convene an SGM within 45 days and elect a secretary and treasurer for the rest of the term. Until such time, the managing committee will run the show. Shankar and Jairam, both well-known chartered accountants, held the honorary positions for the past two and a half years. Their resignations come amid growing public anger and mounting pressure from various quarters demanding accountability from the cricketing body over the stampede. An FIR was filed against the two, along with some other KSCA officials, following Wednesday's sordid incident that prompted chief minister Siddaramaiah to order the arrest of KSCA officials responsible for the incident. With police on the hunt, Shankar and Jairam approached Karnataka high court on Friday, seeking anticipatory bail. The petition, which also named KSCA president Bhat, argued that the association and its office-bearers were not directly liable for what had happened. While the court granted interim protection from arrest, the resignations of Shankar and Jairam are being seen as a symbolic acceptance of moral responsibility. Will the international calendar hold? The prevailing circumstances have put a question mark on the preparedness of the state association for a hectic international calendar ahead, during which, Bengaluru is set to host the ICC Women's 50-over World Cup, with the opening match featuring India to be held in the city on Sept 30, apart from one semifinal (on Oct 30). The final on Nov 2 is scheduled to be held in either Bengaluru or Colombo (if Pakistan qualify). KSCA is also scheduled to host a three-match one-day series between India A and South Africa A from Nov 13-19. The crowd surge inside and the stampede outside on Wednesday left the stadium's exteriors and a section of the stands severely damaged, and it will be a race against time for the venue to be put back in shape. Govt increases compensation The state govt has increased the compensation from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh for the families of those killed in the stampede. The govt also said it was committed to providing free treatment to those injured. The opposition parties and the public had criticised the govt for initially announcing a Rs 10 lakh compensation, alleging that the state govt paid Rs 25 lakh to the kin of a man who was killed in Kerala after being attacked by a Karnataka elephant.

New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): Former Proteas head coach Mark Boucher believes that if South Africa can gun down the reigning World Test Champions, Australia, it could mark the beginning of a new era. He also identified two youngsters who could be the key to their success in the upcoming final at Lord's. South Africa earned a spot in the WTC final after winning seven consecutive Tests and finished at the top of the table standings. After getting a shot at ending their trophy drought, South Africa found itself surrounded by criticism, considering they had just played 12 fixtures to fight for the WTC mace. 'A lot of people have criticised South Africa, which is not really fair. You play what's in front of you, and with all due respect, the sides that we've played against, we probably should have beaten, and we've done that. So we find ourselves in a final. But I wouldn't say that it has got the crowds going in our country,' Boucher told ESPNcricinfo during the IPL. 'Everyone's very excited about it now as the opportunity arises, a lot of people are going to travel over to London, spend all their Rands and go watch what should be a good match. If we win it, I think then that could be the turnaround for Test cricket in our country,' he added. 'Ryan Rickelton has been playing nicely for Mumbai Indians (MI) and he was actually on the tour that we went to England [in 2022] as well. He's actually played quite a few games in England as well, so he'll know the conditions,' Boucher said. 'And Tristan Stubbs has come back and played a lot of domestic cricket and basically forced his way into the Test side because of the runs that he's got. On paper, Australia will probably feel that they've got a better batting line-up than what we have, but have we got the attitude to go out there and in a one-off game, just leave it all out there? Absolutely,' he added. New Delhi [India], June 7 (ANI): The 21st edition of the Delhi International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament was officially inaugurated in the national capital, marking a significant occasion in the Indian chess calendar. Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma praised India's up-and-coming chess players at the event and offered his best wishes to the young players. Minister Verma said at the inauguration, 'The first Grandmaster Delhi Chess Tournament has been inaugurated. I convey my best wishes to all the children. India is very proud of the achievements of all our children, whether it is our Gukesh (Dommaraju) or Vaishali (Rameshbabu).' He further praised the organisers' and the chess fraternity's efforts in nurturing young talent and bringing the game to such a prominent stage. 'Many congratulations to all, and I convey my best wishes to the Federation and the Association for organising such a good tournament here at such a good level,' he added. With a record prize pool of Rs 1.21 crore, the Delhi International Open Grandmasters chess tournament is all set for its 21st edition from June 7 to 14 at Tivoli Gardens, Chattarpur, New Delhi. A marquee calendar event on the FIDE World Championship Circuit, the tournament has played a pivotal role in shaping the rise of India's chess stars, including past winners Arjun Erigaisi and Aravindh Chithambaram, R Praggnanandhaa, and World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, who earned his final GM norm here to become a Grandmaster. Organised under the aegis of the All India Chess Federation, the Delhi GM Open has grown into the largest classical-format chess tournament in Asia by participation. This year, the Delhi GM Open will host over 2,500 players from over 15 countries, including 20 Grandmasters, competing across three rating-based categories. The prize pool marks a 168 per cent increase from last year's edition. Category A has a Rs 51 lakh prize pool and is open to internationally rated players. Categories B and C, for players rated below 1900 and 1700, respectively, will offer Rs 35 lakh each. All matches will follow FIDE rules and the FIDE Swiss System format, with 10 rounds in every section. Category A games will follow a classical time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one, with the top three prizes set at Rs7,00,000, Rs6,00,000, and Rs5,00,000 respectively. The top ten finishers in this category will each receive Rs 1,00,000 or more, while special prizes of Rs 1,00,000 each will be awarded to the Best Female Player and Best Foreign Player. Category B and C games will follow a 60-minute-plus-30-second time limit and 30-minute-plus-30-second formats, respectively.
