Three days after Bengaluru stampede, cricket association secretary & treasurer step down on moral grounds

Time of India5 hours ago

Bengaluru: Days after the horrific stampede outside the city's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, in which 11 people were killed and 75 injured, the secretary and treasurer of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) stepped down, taking moral responsibility for the disaster.
Secretary A Shankar and treasurer AE Jairam tendered their resignations late Friday to association president Raghuram Bhat. On Saturday, Shankar and Jairam issued a joint press statement confirming their decision.
"Due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days, though our role was very limited, we are taking moral responsibility. We have submitted our resignations from our respective posts as secretary and treasurer of KSCA," the statement read.
At the emergency managing committee meeting on Saturday, which a majority of members opted to attend virtually, the duo's resignation was accepted.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Bhat, a former India spinner, explained: "The committee acknowledged the contribution of the secretary and treasurer and accepted their resignation."
Asked if the rest of the office-bearers would also resign, Bhat said: "The committee will not be dissolved as of now.
We are offering our full support to the investigating authorities."
While KSCA polls are scheduled for Oct, the association has to convene an SGM within 45 days and elect a secretary and treasurer for the rest of the term. Until such time, the managing committee will run the show.
Shankar and Jairam, both well-known chartered accountants, held the honorary positions for the past two and a half years. Their resignations come amid growing public anger and mounting pressure from various quarters demanding accountability from the cricketing body over the stampede.
An FIR was filed against the two, along with some other KSCA officials, following Wednesday's sordid incident that prompted chief minister Siddaramaiah to order the arrest of KSCA officials responsible for the incident.
With police on the hunt, Shankar and Jairam approached Karnataka high court on Friday, seeking anticipatory bail. The petition, which also named KSCA president Bhat, argued that the association and its office-bearers were not directly liable for what had happened.
While the court granted interim protection from arrest, the resignations of Shankar and Jairam are being seen as a symbolic acceptance of moral responsibility.
Will the international calendar hold?
The prevailing circumstances have put a question mark on the preparedness of the state association for a hectic international calendar ahead, during which, Bengaluru is set to host the ICC Women's 50-over World Cup, with the opening match featuring India to be held in the city on Sept 30, apart from one semifinal (on Oct 30).
The final on Nov 2 is scheduled to be held in either Bengaluru or Colombo (if Pakistan qualify).
KSCA is also scheduled to host a three-match one-day series between India A and South Africa A from Nov 13-19.
The crowd surge inside and the stampede outside on Wednesday left the stadium's exteriors and a section of the stands severely damaged, and it will be a race against time for the venue to be put back in shape.
Govt increases compensation
The state govt has increased the compensation from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh for the families of those killed in the stampede.
The govt also said it was committed to providing free treatment to those injured.
The opposition parties and the public had criticised the govt for initially announcing a Rs 10 lakh compensation, alleging that the state govt paid Rs 25 lakh to the kin of a man who was killed in Kerala after being attacked by a Karnataka elephant.

Harry Kane saves England from embarrassment against Andorra in World Cup qualifying

England needed a second-half goal from Harry Kane to secure a 1-0 win over lowly Andorra and maintain a perfect record under Thomas Tuchel after three World Cup qualifiers. England was held scoreless by a team ranked 173rd in the world until Kane redirected a pass from Noni Madueke into the top of the net in the 50th minute after the Bayern Munich striker's initial effort was saved by goalkeeper Iker Álvarez. 'We need to be better for sure,' Kane said. 'It's not one that many will remember, and we had good spells, but we take the three points and move on.' It was goal No. 72 in his 106th appearance for the Three Lions. Tuchel's side remained top of Europe's Group K with nine points after wins against Albania and Latvia. They have yet to concede a goal under the German coach. Nevertheless, Tuchel said that he was 'not happy' with the slim win over tiny Andorra, which has a population of around 80,000. 'At the end of it, it was absolutely not OK because we lost focus and we lost the urgency that is needed,' he said. Andorra remained winless but managed to frustrate England's stars for most of the game with its five-man defensive line. Ezri Konsa had to block a late shot by Andorra's Guillaume Lopez to prevent the chance of an equalizer. 'We kept giving it away and that gave them a bit of confidence and energy,' Kane said. "At 1-0 with five to 10 minutes to go you have to be careful.' England dominated possession and Eberechi Eze went close to a second goal when he forced Álvarez to tip his header of the bar as the visitors couldn't extend the lead. England had won its previous six meetings with Andorra by a combined score of 25-0. 'In terms of effort, I think I couldn't be prouder of my team and how they carried it out,' Andorra coach Koldo Álvarez said. The game was played at Espanyol's stadium in Barcelona, nearly three hours south of the Pyrenees principality due to concerns that work on Andorra's home stadium wouldn't be finished in time. Only the group winners qualify directly for next year's tournament in North America. The second-placed teams go into a playoffs. Europe will have 16 teams in the expanded 48-team field for the World Cup. The group stage of European qualifying runs through November. England will next host Senegal in a friendly on Tuesday. Albania and Serbia draw under tight securityAlbania and Serbia drew 0-0 in the latest chapter of a charged rivalry rooted in deep historical and ethnic tensions between the Balkan neighbors. Serbia goalkeeper Dorde Petrovic saved a penalty kick by Rey Manaj in the best chance of the game, which was played without Serbian fans as determined by UEFA for security concerns. Albania is second in Group K behind England with four points after three games. There were few chances in the match played under tight security, with more than 2,000 police officers guarding the capital. Albanian fans loudly whistled when the Serbian anthem was played and shouted Kosovo, which predominantly has an ethnic Albanian population and which was part of Serbia until 1999 when a NATO air campaign pushed Serb forces and authorities out. Some fans tossed beer cups at the Serbian players, despite repeated calls for them to stop. A 2014 game between the teams in Belgrade was abandoned when a drone carrying an Albanian flag sparked a full-scale brawl. The last time they met on Albanian soil was in 2015. Veteran Dzeko scores for BosniaA goal from 39-year-old Edin Dzeko gave Bosnia and Herzegovina a 1-0 win over San Marino. The Balkan republic leads Group H with three wins, while San Marino is bottom with zero points. Austria beat Romania 2-1 in the same group as Michael Gregoritsch and Marcel Sabitzer scored for the hosts before Denis Alibec halved the difference in injury time. Memphis Depay and Denzel Dumfries provided the scoring for the Netherlands in a 2-0 win at Finland to start their qualifying campaign in Group G. Lithuania was held 0-0 at Malta also in Group G. FIFA World Cup 2026 Hosts USA Suffer Third Straight Defeat

The United States suffered their third straight loss under coach Mauricio Pochettino as they fell to a 2-1 friendly defeat to Turkey in Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday. Pochettino, whose team lost to Panama and Canada in the CONCACAF Nations League finals in March, was without several starters, including captain and AC Milan winger Christian Pulisic. Almost a year out from the start of the World Cup, which the USA is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, Pochettino used the match to take a look at some of those on the fringes of his squad. One of those, Houston Dynamo midfielder Jack McGlynn, put the home side ahead in the second minute in spectacular fashion. The 21-year-old picked the ball up on the right flank, cut inside and then curled a beautiful shot from 20-yards out into the far corner. It was an intense start from a hungry looking USA, but Turkey soon found their footing and began to apply pressure on the USA back line. Arda Guler missed a great chance, unmarked in the box he leaned back and fired over the bar and then Orkun Kokcu forced debutant keeper Matt Freese into a fine save with a fierce drive. The visitors' pressure paid off in the 24th minute but it was gifted to them by USA midfielder Johnny Cardoso who, attempting to play out from the back, clipped a pass against Guler which ricocheted past Freese and into the net. Less then three minutes later, Turkey had the lead after the USA defence was unable to clear and the ball fell to Kerem Akturkoglu who drove home. Pochettino's men were much better after the break though and were unfortunate not to draw level - Max Arfsten headed wide from close range and Patrick Agyemang had a shot on target but the best opportunity fell to Malik Tillman. Substitute Tyler Adams floated a lovely cross to the back post but with all the goal to aim at, Tillman headed straight at Turkey keeper Berke Ozer. As the USA pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Turkey had a late chance to make it 3-1 but after a swift counter-attack Baris Alper Yilmaz screwed his shot wide. "For the first time for a few camps there were more positives than negatives," said midfielder Adams. "I think we have a lot of room for growth, if you asked me in March, I would say that we were far away but after a performance like that, there's a lot more positives that we can take away," he added. The USA face Switzerland in Nashville on Tuesday.

Pochettino back to Tottenham? Former Spurs boss reveals whether he will return or not

USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino has played down rumours linking him with the vacant managerial position at his former club Tottenham Hotspur, following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou on Friday. Argentine Pochettino was in charge of Spurs for five years from 2014 and took the team to the UEFA Champions League final but never won a trophy with the North London club. Despite having signed a two year contract in September to lead the USA at the 2026 World Cup, which it tis co-hosting with Canada and Mexico, Pochettino's name has appeared in bookmakers' lists of favourites for the Spurs job and in several UK reports. But asked on Saturday about the links, in his post-match press conference following the USA's 2-1 home friendly defeat to Turkey, Pochettino played down the talk. 'After I left in 2019, every time that I was free, and the place of the position of the manager or head coach in Tottenham Hotspur (was vacant), my name is appearing on the list,' Pochettino said. 'If you have seen the rumours, I think there are 100 coaches in the list. I think, don't be worried about that,' he added. Pochettino has talked in the past about his remaining affection for Spurs and has never ruled out the possibility of returning to the club at some point. But he suggested the timing was not right for a second chance with his old team. 'If something happened, you for sure you will see, but we cannot talk about this type of thing, because I think today, it's not real. It's not realistic. And look at where I am, where we are,' he said in the stadium press room in Hartford, Connecticut. 'And the thing is, the answer is so clear, no? But we're talking about it because it's my club, like Newells or Espanyol,' he added. Postecoglou was fired just 16 days after the Australian ended Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League. Postecoglou led Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao to clinch the north Londoners' first European prize in 41 years and secure a place in next season's Champions League. The former Celtic boss paid the price for Tottenham's worst domestic season since they were relegated from the top flight in 1976-77. The USA has now lost three games in a row, following losses to Panama and Canada in March's CONCACAF Nations League but Pochettino was upbeat about his team's encouraging display after question marks about the attitude of his team in recent games. 'This attitude I want to continue for the future until we arrive to the World Cup ... that is the only way we can improve,' he said. 'If I decide in September (to have a) different roster, what I want is the same level of commitment, attitude, not to complain (about) this and that,' he added.
