Here's a look at the complete list of changes in India's T20I squad for the Asia Cup 2025 from the last series played against England in January-February 2025.

RCB wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh hasn't played a T20I for India since January 14, 2024.

Shubman Gill's T20I elevation lays bare BCCI's long-term vision as India cricket seek next superstar
India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar announced India's squad for the upcoming Asia Cup during a press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday, with Shubman Gill's return after a year and his elevation to vice-captaincy being the key takeaway. Shubman Gill is expected to open along with Abhishek Sharma in T20Is after being named vice-captain ahead of the Asia Cup. AP It's Shubman Gill's world, and we're just living in it. Tuesday's squad announcement for the Asia Cup proved just that. A lot was said about the dashing batter from the border town of Fazilka, Punjab when he had made his international debut during the tour of New Zealand in early 2019. Gill, after all, was one of the shining stars in India's triumphant U-19 World Cup campaign the year before. It was only a matter of time before Gill began churning out those performances at the senior level, whether in international cricket or in the Indian Premier League, which would then lead to comparisons with iconic batter and leader Virat Kohli. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Fast forward to 2025, and Gill truly finds himself on top of the cricketing world. And the funny thing is that his life has transformed for the better in a matter of just three months. Gill, after all, was named Rohit Sharma's successor as Test captain in May after the 'Hitman' abruptly announced his retirement along with Kohli. He would then go on a record-breaking spree in his maiden Test series as captain as well as batting at the No 4 spot, playing a key role in helping his team walk away with a 2-2 draw. And now, the 25-year-old returns to the T20I side not just as a vital cog in the batting order but as the vice-captain more than a year after his last appearance for the Men in Blue in the format. One step closer to leadership across formats? The move all but confirms one thing – that the Indian team management as well as the board views him as the next all-formats captain. And that Tuesday's announcement was another step in that direction. There were doubts among experts and fans alike when Gill was first named Test captain, especially the perception of him being thrown into the deep end by touring a country where he had struggled with the bat in the past. Gill would silence his critics by amassing 754 runs in the five-Test series – only the legendary Don Bradman has scored more runs (812) in a Test series as captain – leading his team by example in the process. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The manner in which he dominated the English bowlers in the recent tour, as well as in past IPL editions such as 2023, along with the leadership that he has exhibited so far with the Gujarat Titans as well as the Indian Test team further highlights the fact that he is the right man for the job. 'We're happy to have him' During the press conference at the BCCI's Mumbai headquarters on Tuesday, Suryakumar Yadav reminded reporters that Surya was actually the vice-captain in the shortest format before a hectic schedule with Test cricket as a the priority forced him to focus on other formats. 'Last time when he played T20 post World Cup, when we went to Sri Lanka, he was vice-captain. That's where we started new cycle for T20 World Cup. After that we got busy with Test cricket, and he didn't get opportunities. We're happy to have him,' Surya said at the press conference. India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar announce India's squad for the Asia Cup at a press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday, 19 August. AP There were reports of Gill possibly being overlooked for the Asia Cup in favour of maintaining continuity in the Indian T20 team, which has won 28 out of its last 31 matches. However, an individual who is said to count both head coach Gautam Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar among his fans isn't likely to be left out of a squad, especially for an event as important as the Asia Cup. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD His inclusion will, of course, come at the expense of other talented players. With Gill now likely to open alongside Punjab and India teammate Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order and slots booked all the way till the lower middle-order, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson will most likely have to warm the bench in the Asia Cup and possibly even in next year's T20 World Cup. Samson has done little wrong to lose his place in the playing XI – he had, after all, smashed back-to-back centuries in the shortest format for the Men in Blue last year, and would end up with three centuries in a space of five outings as a result. Problem of plenty strikes Indian cricket again Then again, Indian cricket has been dealing with a problem of plenty for a while now, and that comes purely down to the success of India's domestic system and the IPL along with strong leadership and guidance in the national teams over the years. The result – Team India having plenty of match-winning options for each position or department across formats. Coming back to Gill, he isn't likely to remain vice-captain too long. The BCCI and the team management might be seeing Suryakumar as their leader for the T20I format till the end of the T20 World Cup. Once that's out of the way, he might be persuaded to give up his post for Gill, much like Rohit in Tests earlier this year. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD All that will be left for will be the 2027 ICC World Cup. And even though both Rohit and Kohli have expressed their desire to play that tournament, the former presumably as captain, it won't come as a surprise if the powers of Indian cricket are already visualising Gill wear the captain's armband in cricket's showpiece event.

Gill back in T20 fold, named vice-captain
Mumbai: Shubman Gill returns to India's T20 fold as opener and vice-captain, making him a certain starter in the Suryakumar Yadav-led side for the Asia Cup campaign starting September 10. India play Pakistan as well as UAE and Oman in the league phase. BCCI selection committee Chairman Ajit Agarkar with Indian men's T20 cricket captain Suryakumar Yadav. (PTI) Gill's selection from among India's burgeoning T20 talent pool didn't seem locked in with Abhishek Sharma-Sanju Samson's opening combination having made a strong case with their power-packed starts in the previous three bilateral series. However, before Tuesday's selection meeting, in a final round of informal deliberations between captain, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir, they are known to have decided to back high-flying Test skipper Gill's T20 credentials. 'The last time he played T20I, post the World Cup when we went to Sri Lanka, he was the vice-captain,' Surya said about Gill. 'That's where we started a new cycle for the (2026) T20 World Cup. After that we got busy with Test cricket and he didn't get opportunities. We're happy to have him.' Like Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal too was a playing eleven regular in that Sri Lanka series, played in July last year. He was picked ahead of Gill for the 2024 World Cup. Gill, having grown in stature in the other formats, has earned himself an opportunity to find his T20 peak. With Jaiswal 'it's unfortunate,' Agarkar told the media conference. In all likelihood, Gill will open with Abhishek Sharma, his fellow Punjab opener. That will force another change in the playing combination – Samson is likely to make way for Jitesh, who makes a comeback and will slot in as a finisher in India's preferred eleven. Gill's ascent to becoming a key member in India's all-format leadership group is evident. 'I can discuss T20 right now. In Test cricket, he is already leading. He was the vice-captain in the last T20, so we obviously see some leadership qualities in him,' Agarkar said. 'And his form in England, he obviously exceeded all our expectations, which is a great sign, (to perform) when there's so much pressure on you as a captain.' Shreyas misses out Shreyas Iyer's 604 runs while leading Punjab Kings to the IPL final went unrewarded. With India's Asia Cup matches to be played in Dubai where the wickets may assist spin, the proficiency of Shreyas against spin may have come into consideration. However, the selectors chose to stick with Tilak Varma, who scored heavily in the bilateral series before IPL. 'Again, no fault of his. Got to tell me who he can replace? At the moment, he'll have to wait for his chance,' Agarkar said on Shreyas. While Shreyas does not find a place even among the five reserves, allrounder Washington Sundar does. Jaiswal, Prasidh Krishna, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel are the others who narrowly missed the cut. With Gambhir's preference to have multi-skilled options in the squad, Washington stood a chance. Instead, the selectors went with Rinku Singh, giving the UP left-hander another chance to excel in the difficult finishing role. Among spinners, Kuldeep Yadav's return pushes leggie Ravi Bishnoi out, opening a window for the wrist spinner to combine with Varun Chakravarthy. The spin twins were very successful in bamboozling batters in the ODI Champions Trophy played earlier in the year in Dubai. Bumrah for big games Back to leading the pace pack will be Jasprit Bumrah. Giving him company will be Arshdeep Singh. The two were a force during India's winning campaign in 2024 USA-West Indies. Bumrah's limited availability for the England Test series to manage his workload has raised further questions on how the pace ace may be used across formats in the immediate future. 'I don't think there's any written plan,' said Agarkar. 'It's been a nice break after the England series. Physios, team management and people concerned have always been in touch, tried to look after him since we know how valuable he is. Clearly, we want him available for all the big games. There are World Cups, Champions Trophy, big series like England, Australia – you want him available. Because he's picked up injuries over the last 2-3 years, because of how special and unique it is, it won't change. Based on how he's feeling and how we require him, we hope he's available more often than not.' The third pacer's slot goes to Harshit Rana, who had made a bright debut in the last T20I series against England in January-February. Rana's ability to hit the deck and his power-hitting saw him chosen over Krishna, who was the highest wicket-taker in this year's IPL with 25 scalps. 'It's not like we don't look at IPL,' said Agarkar. 'When you pick a T20 squad, of course, you look at IPL performances. Because there have been overlapping series, there have been a lot more people who have ended up playing T20 cricket. We've got so many options as far as T20 is concerned that sometimes it's not the easiest squad to pick. It's a good headache to have.'

Asia Cup: Pakistan replaced by Bangladesh, India to open against China
New Delhi: The Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) confirmed on Tuesday that Pakistan will not be participating at the Asia Cup and will be replaced by Bangladesh as they announced the schedule for the August 29-September 7 competition to be held in Rajgir, Bihar. File image of Pakistan's Abdul Waheed Ashraf Rana (R) in action with India's Hardik Singh. (AFP) Speculation had been rife about Pakistan's withdrawal ever since the border skirmish with India in May which followed the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that resulted in the deaths of 26 people. 'It was always unlikely. But now it is confirmed that Pakistan won't be travelling to India due to security concerns,' a Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) official told HT on condition of anonymity. Indian officials and authorities had always maintained that should Pakistan decide to come, their players will be given visas. In Pakistan's absence, Bangladesh will be travelling for the eight-team tournament. In a surprise move, Oman have also pulled out, leading AHF to invite Kazakhstan. Hosts India have been grouped with Japan, China and Kazakhstan in Pool A while Pool B comprises Malaysia, defending champions South Korea and Chinese Taipei. India will open their campaign against China (August 29) before taking on Japan (August 31) and Kazakhstan (September 1). The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super 4s which will be held from September 3-6 before the top two take on each other in the final on September 7. The winner will get a direct berth for the 2026 World Cup to be held in the Netherlands and Belgium. While world No.7 India qualified as hosts, four teams – No.12 Malaysia, No.13 South Korea, No.18 Japan and No.23 China – will play in Rajgir based on their rankings. Chinese Taipei, Bangladesh and Kazakhstan qualified via the AHF Cup. 'The Hero Asia Cup Rajgir Bihar 2025 will bring together the very best of Asian hockey. With World Cup qualification on the line, every match will carry enormous importance. We are confident this edition will showcase thrilling competition, inspire millions of fans, and leave a lasting legacy for the sport in Asia,' AHF president Fumio Ogura said. South Korea is the most successful team with five Asia Cup titles while India and Pakistan have won three each. This will be the second international hockey tournament to be held in Rajgir after the Women's Asian Champions Trophy in November 2024 which the hosts won. The Harmanpreet Singh-led Indian men's hockey team is currently preparing for the Asia Cup in Perth, playing four friendly matches against hosts Australia. The Asia Cup will be a big test for the Craig Fulton-coached side who finished a lowly eighth, just about avoiding relegation, in the elite nine-team Pro League.
