Ajit Agarkar distances himself from Shreyas Iyer's omission from Asia Cup squad: ‘No fault of his, nor is it ours'

Hindustan Times10 hours ago
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Tuesday unveiled the 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025. One of the major talking points was the omission of Shreyas Iyer, despite his blistering run of form in IPL 2025, where he not only piled on runs but also guided Punjab Kings to the final. The selection committee went ahead with Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Shivam Dube, alongside skipper Suryakumar Yadav, in the middle order, as Shreyas had to miss out on the squad. Ajit Agarkar reacted to Shreyas Iyer's omission from the Asia Cup 2025 squad.
Shreyas last played a T20I in December 2023, where he also scored a fine half-century in India's win over Australia. He also missed out on the 2024 T20 World Cup squad despite leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title that year.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar offered a clear explanation for Iyer's omission, stressing that neither he nor the panel was at fault. He said the committee opted for a combination they felt best suited the tournament's demands.
"With regards to Shreyas, I mean, you need to tell him who he can replace. No fault of his, nor is it ours. It's just that we have to pick 15 at the moment, he'll have to wait for his chance," Agarkar said in the press conference.
Shreyas Iyer has to wait for his chance despite incredible IPL 2025
Earlier this year, Iyer returned to the ODI side during the England series and went on to play a pivotal role in India's Champions Trophy triumph. He emerged as the team's leading run-scorer and the tournament's second-highest overall, amassing 243 runs in five innings at an average of 48.60, which included two half-centuries.
He continued his sublime form in the IPL too, where he ended up as the sixth-highest run-getter and had his best season. The Punjab Kings skipper amassed 604 runs in 17 matches and innings at an average of 50.33, a strike rate of 175.07 and six fifties. He played a massive role in taking PBKS to their first IPL final since 2014, but the team fell short by six runs to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
The Asia Cup is scheduled to take place in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from September 9 to 28. India open their campaign against hosts UAE on September 10 in Dubai, before facing arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14 at the same venue. Their last group-stage match will be against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.

Home theatre: India's quest for glory

CHENNAI: IN the end, it was a squad with no surprises. As Neetu David, chair of the women's selection committee, sat alongside captain Harmanpreet Kaur and announced the 15-member team for the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup, it seemed clear that India have opted for safety and balance in their quest to win the first global trophy. Explosive opener Shafali Verma did not make the cut while Renuka Singh Thankur who had been out of action due to injury was included in the squad for the ODIs against Australia as well as the global event that follows. Meanwhile, all-rounder Amanjot Kaur who is currently nursing a niggle at the BCCI Centre of Excellence has been rested for the Australia ODIs but is a part of the squad for the World Cup. Shafali's exclusion meant Pratika Rawal will continue to open with Smriti Mandhana. The Haryana batter was dropped from the side late last year before making waves in the domestic circuit. However, when Shafali was picked for the England T20Is and the India A tour of Australia, she failed to make an impact. Chief selector Neetu said that the youngster is in the scheme of things and they are hoping that she will have a long career with India. "Shafali played the Australia A series. She's in the system, it is not like that she's not. We've got our eyes on her. Hope she plays a lot more and garners experience, it'll help serve India in the 50-overs format in the future. We want a long career from Shafali," Neetu said at the press conference on Tuesday.

"What A Shame": BCCI Blasted For Shreyas Iyer's Asia Cup Omission

Shreyas Iyer 's exclusion from India's Asia Cup squad has led to strong criticism of the Ajit Agarkar -led selection committee. Speaking during the squad announcement press conference on Tuesday, Agarkar opened up on his snub, insisting that Iyer missed out due to abundance of talent in the format. After guiding Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title last year, Iyer led Punjab Kings (PBKS) all the way to the final in 2025, where they lost to Virat Kohli 's Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He also played a crucial role with the bat as India lifted the Champions Trophy earlier this year. "About Shreyas, who can he replace? No fault of his, nor is it ours. At the moment, you can just pick 15. So he will have to wait for his chance. We have got some serious options in T20 not the easiest squad to pick but good headache to have," said Agarkar. However, fans were not happy with the selectors ignoring Iyer, who was not even part of the five-man reserves for the tournament. - Most Runs in Champions Trophy - More Runs than Shubman Gill in WC - Reached IPL Finals being Top Run Scorer of Team Gautam Gambhir is just jealous of him. There is not even a single reason to drop Shreyas Iyer. — Selfless(@SelflessCricket) August 19, 2025 They didn't select Shreyas Iyer because he could have been a lethal threat to the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill. When you can't compete with him , Eliminate him. Yet again politics won. — PIXEL77 (@SaviourShrey96) August 19, 2025 Setbacks came to him through injuries, politics, grudges but my man never bowed down to anything . I love you Shreyas Iyer — Parv (@ParvCryEmoji) August 19, 2025 Shreyas Iyer's reality right now - no spot in Tests, no spot in T20Is, not even in India A. Despite performing in domestics & IPL, he's still left waiting. Toughest phase of his career. — Atul (@tiwariaatul) August 19, 2025 What a shame, why Shreyas Iyer is not in the list. — Old मोंक (@mannudada111) August 19, 2025 Notably, Test skipper Shubman Gill was recalled to the side for the tournament, and also named vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel. Both Suryakumar Yadav and Agarkar said the Asia Cup signals the start of India's cycle for the next T20 World Cup. Agarkar was asked whether Gill's return to the squad as vice-captain is an indicator that he may take up the leadership mantle in the future. "He led in T20I (Zimbabwe), and in the Test team, he is already leading, and like Surya mentioned, he was vice-captain in the last T20I, so we obviously see some leadership qualities in him, and his form in England was what we were hoping for. He obviously exceeded all our expectations, with the kind of form that he showed with his bat, which is a great sign when there's so much pressure on you as a captain," said Agarkar.

Bhopal: Right-arm medium pacer Kranti Goud (21) from Madhya Pradesh has been selected for the Indian Women's cricket team for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia from September 14 to 20 and the World Cup tournament from September 30 to November 2, both to be held in India. Goud gained recognition through her outstanding performance in the recently concluded ODI series against England. Hailing from the tribal region of Chhatarpur in Bundelkhand, Goud overcame significant challenges to succeed in cricket. The youngest of six siblings, she expressed her happiness over the selection: "I can't believe it. It was my dream to play for the country in the world cup." She added, "You were the first to inform me about my selection for the match against Australia. And, now my brother just informed me about my selection to the World Cup team," said Goud. In the ODI series against England in England, Goud took six wickets in her spell of 9.5 overs that steered team India to win the series by 2-1. Acknowledging Goud's contribution in the victory of the Indian team, her Captain Harmanpreet shared her 'Man of the Match' title with her. The right-arm medium-fast bowler made her ODI debut against Sri Lanka on May 11 and her T20 international debut against England on July 12, 2025. Kranti's coach Rajiv Bilthare recalled," She came in worn-out clothes and regular shoes. I gave her Rs 1,600 to buy spikes. This was her first time she went onto the field wearing proper cricket shoes." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
