Jammu, Aug 13 (PTI) The Army's Tiger Division on Wednesday celebrated the 100th birthday of Lt Colonel Sharak Dev Singh Jamwal (retd), who was commissioned into the 7th Light Cavalry in 1946 during the final stages of the Second World War.
Lt Col Jamwal, born on this day in 1926 in Jammu, was commissioned into the 7th Light Cavalry in 1946 during the final stages of the Second World War, the spokesman said, adding his distinguished military career included active participation in the Burma Campaign, the 1947-48 Indo-Pak War, the Liberation of Goa in 1961 and the Sino-Indian War of 1962.
During 1947-48, the spokesman said he, as the Squadron Commander of C Sqn, 7 Cavalry, inducted tanks across the inhospitable high altitude Zojila Pass, leading to the recapture of Zojila and relief of besieged Ladakh.
This year also marks the glorious 60 years of the victory of the Indian Armed Forces in the 1965 war, he said.
During the visit, the officers conveyed the Army's deep appreciation for Lt Col Jamwal's unwavering commitment to the nation and his embodiment of the timeless values of honour, duty, selfless service and camaraderie, the spokesman said.
He said the celebrations included a ceremonial cake cutting, symbolising the enduring bond between serving soldiers and veterans.
The occasion also served as a reminder of the Indian Army's steadfast tradition of honouring its veterans, whose sacrifices and leadership form the bedrock of the nation's security and inspire future generations of soldiers, the spokesman said. PTI TAS TAS KSS KSS

Srinagar, Aug 16 (PTI) Kashmiri Pandits celebrated Janmashtami with religious fervour and took out a procession in the heart of the city on Saturday to mark the birthday of Lord Krishna, officials said. The procession started from Ganpatyar temple in Habba Kadal area of the city centre and passed through Kralkhud and Barbarshah, before reaching the clock tower at the historic Lal Chowk amid tight security arrangements. The city centre came alive with vibrant celebrations as devotees, including men, women and children, some of whom had dressed up as Lord Krishna, sang bhajans and took part in the procession, and dancing alongside the chariot, officials said. The devotees also offered special prayers for the victims of cloudburst in Kishtwar district. The procession then passed through the Jehangir Chowk and returned to the temple, officials added. Operation Sindoor makes way to Mathura Janmashtami celebration
Agency: PTI Mathura, Aug 16 (PTI) Operation Sindoor made its way to the Janmashtami celebration here, with the idol of Lord Krishna being placed in a 'sindoor' bungalow at the Keshavdev temple here. Priests say this is the 5252nd birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. According to the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi Trust secretary Kapil Sharma, Operation Sindoor gave people a glimpse of Krishna with the Sudarshan Chakra. 'Therefore, the full incarnation Lord Shri Krishna will also sit in the 'Sindoor' bungalow and give darshan," Sharma said. He said Thakurji, as is Krishna also called, will preside in the Bhagwat Bhawan built on a high mound at Katra Keshavdev, a part of the temple. 'Thakurji will give darshan in the silver-plated sanctum sanctorum in the 'Sindoor pushp' bungalow wearing a 'Meghadhenu' dress," Sharma said. The temple official said the devotees will be able to enter the temple premises from 5.30 am to 1.30 pm for the Janmabhishek Darshan. Gopeshwar Nath Chaturvedi, member of Shri Krishna Janmasthan Seva Sansthan, said the entire temple has been decked up, with its sanctum sanctorum, famous as Kansa's prison, filigreed with 221 kg of silver. At Vrindavan's Radha Raman temple, Janmashtami is celebrated in the morning. Dinesh Chandra Goswami, Sewayat of Sri Radha Raman temple in Vrindavan, said, 'The morning Janamasthami celebration is in line with the appearance of Lord Radha Ramanji, which happens at the same time. Why wake up a child at night?" A special 'gurh' (jaggery) and til (sesame seeds) prasad is offered to the God, as part of a ritual. Later, the 'chhappan bhog' is offered to the deity, he said. Munish Sharma and Umesh Saraswat, managers of Thakur Bankebihari Temple of Vrindavan, said, according to instructions of the high court, only 500 devotees will be allowed to be present in the temple premises during Mangala Aarti on Sunday morning. Crowd had just thinned, otherwise more lives would be lost
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 16 (PTI) Many more would have died had the portion of the roof of a centuries-old Delhi dargah collapsed just a few hours earlier during the Jumma namaz, say locals. On Friday, six people were killed and five were injured after a wall and the roof of two adjacent rooms of a dargah near Humayun's Tomb in Nizamuddin collapsed. The incident happened around 3.30 pm, and locals believe the toll would have been higher had it happened around the afternoon namaz, when a larger crowd gathers in the area. The famed Dargah Shareef Patte Wali is visited by people not just from the city. 'Had this happened during the prayer time, it would have been a much bigger tragedy," Rakesh, a vendor who sells bhelpuri outside the iconic Humayun's Tomb, told PTI. The dargah is located in the back lane of Humayun's Tomb on the way leading to Sunder Nursery, next to New Horizon School. It now stands forlorn behind a padlock. A guard at Sunder Nursery who had been on duty said, 'We did not know what happened until we saw ambulances and police cars rushing in. We were told by people coming out that a roof, where some people had taken shelter in the rain, had collapsed," Himanshu Tiwari said. The dargah shares its boundary walls with the 16th-century garden tomb commissioned by Mughal emperor Humayun's first wife, Bega Begum, in 1558. One of the men guarding the tomb said the dargah may have been of an earlier vintage than the mausoleum. 'What I know is that this dargah is centuries old, even older than the tomb, and people come here to offer prayers on regular days as well. On Fridays, the number of devotees is much higher," he said. For regular visitors, the grief was deeply personal. A local, who passes by the shrine every week, told PTI, 'I have been coming here from Ghaziabad for years. My belief is strong, and my family comes here every other week. Yesterday, I was caught up with some urgent work, so I couldn't make it. When I came today and learnt that the dargah was closed because of the accident, I felt shaken." Authorities have sealed off the collapsed portion as investigations continue.
