No quick fix in reform
Keeping it together: While some feel the pace of reform under Anwar's administration is too slow, the reality is that getting anything done with a coalition government is not easy or quick anywhere in the world. — Filepic/The Star
THE Anwar administration is midway into its five-year term and one of the strongest criticisms it faces is that reforms are slow. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's opponents have even gone so far as to say that reforms are dead.
The reality of many Opposition leaders anywhere is that when they get into government, they find out one major truth: change cannot happen overnight.

Sabah polls: PKR eyeing 13 seats, talks still ongoing
KOTA KINABALU: PKR, which currently holds just two state seats in Sabah, is eyeing 13 out of the 73 seats in the upcoming state election. However, Sabah PKR chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said discussions are still ongoing within Pakatan Harapan. "There's still some overlap between Pakatan parties so it hasn't been confirmed yet," he said at a press conference here on Sunday (June 29). Mustapha declined to elaborate which 13 seats the party is targeting. PKR currently holds two state seats – Inanam, represented by Datuk Peto Galim and Api-Api, held by Datuk Christina Liew. Meanwhile, Mustapha, who is Sepanggar MP and Deputy Higher Education Minister, condemned the act of burning a caricature of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the recent Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 protest. "This is not our culture. We've never done this kind of thing in Sabah before," he said. He also called for a swift probe into the incident. The protest, which took place at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) on June 22, saw several students burning a caricature of Anwar in protest of alleged corruption and governance issues. Anwar has since urged UMS not to expel the students involved, stating that while the protest was inappropriate, it should not warrant harsh disciplinary action. Mustapha said it was up to Anwar to respond as he sees fit. "That's his prerogative. As far as I'm concerned, burning the caricature was excessive," he said.

MALAYSIA SEEKS WIN-WIN SOLUTION WITH INDONESIA ON AMBALAT ISSUE
AM TANGKAK, June 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will work towards achieving a 'win-win' solution with Indonesia on the maritime boundary issue in Ambalat, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He said this could be achieved through the formation of a joint development authority to spur economic growth and address technical issues in the area. 'Why don't we jointly explore the mineral resources there so that both countries can benefit from them? 'In addition, we will continue talks and negotiations on the border. So we don't want a 'lose-lose' situation (between the two countries),' he told reporters after officiating the Ledang UMNO Division Delegates' Meeting at Dewan Putra Padang Lerek here today. Last Friday, the media reported that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto had expressed the strong commitment of both countries to accelerate strategic cooperation in various fields, including joint development in the maritime border area of Malaysia and Indonesia in Ambalat in a peaceful and mutually beneficial manner. Anwar, at a joint press conference following a bilateral meeting at Istana Merdeka in Jakarta, said both countries should consider economic cooperation, including in the maritime border area, for the benefit of the people. Meanwhile, Mohamad said he would be visiting Rome and Paris starting tomorrow to meet with his counterparts ahead of Anwar's participation in the BRICS Summit next month. He said discussions with his counterparts would cover several issues, including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Palestine, and the conflict involving Iran and the Zionist regime. 'That has always been part of our discussions, namely (the conflict) in Gaza and now in Iran… that will be the main issue,' he said.

South Korea's An Se-young celebrates after beating China's Wang Zhiyi in the women's singles final in the Malaysian Open this year at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil. — FAIHAN GHANI/The Star PETALING JAYA: Top South Korean women singles star An Se-young it seems is close to signing a lucrative sponsorship deal with Yonex but there is still no resolution for Malaysia's women's doubles duo Pearly Tan-M in relation to their contracts. The world No. 3 Pearly-Thinaah have still yet to sign new deals with BAM after their contracts expired last December. It is learnt that the BA of Malaysia have had discussions but yet to finalise the contract matters with the reigning Thailand Open champions Pearly-Thinaah. It seems the pair, who reached the semi-finals of the Paris Olympic Games last year, have been offered a better deal outside and could turn professionals. Meanwhile, according to reports that has been circulating recently, the 23-year-old Se-young is on the verge of signing a deal worth around US$1.44 million per year. The Korean Badminton Association (KBA) allow national players to sign individual sponsorships, a landmark decision which they made in May this year. Earlier, Yonex had been fighting with Li Ning to secure the world No. 1 Se-young under their banner. Se-young is in high demand after winning the Paris Olympic gold last year and the world title in 2023 and is currently the best player in the circuit.
