ILOCOS NORTE - Davao has finally brought the title home as the Eagles pulled away late to silence Western Visayas, 67-51, in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa secondary boys basketball finals on Friday at the Ilocos Norte Centennial Arena.
The victory was a historic feat for the region as it clinched its first-ever Palaro gold medal in the high school ranks.

Jhonmark Pelegrino and Rene Clert Baterbonia carried the offensive onslaught for Davao as the rising tandem poured in 19 points each to help the squad improve from their bronze medal finish last year.
"Very thankful kami kasi ayun nga, history. First-time ever."
Davao started off hot and mounted an early 15-8 separation at the end of the first quarter, but Western Visayas turned to Luke Rose once again as the 15-year-old guard picked up where he left off and fueled a second quarter rampage.
The youthful court general fired 13 points in that period, including three three-pointers that helped Western Visayas pull within just three points at the half, 27-24.
But Baterbonia and Pelegrino took care of business for Davao in the second half with the former scoring nine points as part of a massive 14-3 blast to open the penultimate period, 41-27. They ended the third enjoying a 46-37 lead.
Pelegrino put together the finishing kick by unleashing eight of their last 10 points en route to the 16-point victory as they humbled Western Visayas, which was coming off a pair of upset victories over NCR in quarterfinals and CALABARZON in semifinals.
The win also saw Davao complete a title sweep, going undefeated in four games in the elimination round before beating Northern Mindanao in quarterfinals and Central Luzon in semifinals.

Scottie Thompson proud of Davao's historic title in Palaro basketball

Davao Region has won its maiden title in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa secondary basketball and no one is prouder than former Davao athlete Scottie Thompson. Thompson, who bannered the Davao squad in 2010, said he is proud especially since his former teammate Jess Evangelio steered the team to the title. Thompson said the Palarong Pambansa in 2010 was a turning point in his career as he was discovered there by the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA. Doon ako na-scout so malaking bagay ang Palarong Pambansa," Thompson said, adding that the current crop of student-athletes are seen on bigger platforms. With Davao taking home the crown, is Thompson also looking to bring in some of the athletes from his hometown to Manila, particularly in Perpetual where he serves as team manager of the men's basketball team? "May kinakausap kami. Kung puwede lahat eh," he said in jest. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Bemedalled swimmer Titus Sia dedicates Palaro success to brother in autism spectrum

ILOCOS NORTE - What began as a shared activity with his older brother turned into a passion for Titus Sia, who is now the most decorated male athlete in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa. The 12-year-old Sia shared he only started swimming when he was around four years old, joining his brother Chace in the latter's swimming lessons as a way to cope with the challenges of mild autism. Sia went on to compete in several tournaments every weekend, but would be forced to take a pause for more than two years due to the pandemic. Eventually, when the new normal began, his mother Hyacinth helped him join a swim club at Xavier School to continue his training. That marked the start of his competitive journey. "Kasi 'yung older brother ko special and 'yung mama ko decided to make him do swimming so that after each swim lesson he'll be less hyper. She let me joined it and I found joy and I kept swimming after that," Sia said after sweeping all of his seven events in this year's Palaro in Ilocos Norte. "Five or four (years old ako nag-start) but I stopped for three years because of pandemic. Only after the pandemic did I start doing competitive." Niño Sia, his father, admitted they had let Titus try other sports like basketball, but the latter opted to go with swimming and shared seeing him do it with his older brother is something special, hoping they inspire others too. "'Yung older brother niya ay under the spectrum of mild autism," Niño shared. Knowing how his son started out, Niño was just speechless he performed at Palaro. The younger Sia broke three records to rule the 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle, and 400m events. He also emerged on top in 100m freestyle, 4x50m medley relay, 50m backstroke, and 4x50m freestyle relay. Coming from a bronze last year, then now na tatlong recods tapos seven out of seven 'yung gold. Speechless din ako," Niño added. "Si Titus, mabait naman siya. Never siya nag-complain, kumbaga gustong-gusto niya 'yung pressure." Titus is set to return to major action in October when he sees action in Batang Pinoy in General Santos City. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
