Climate Change is Coming for Your Bananas

Affordable and nutritious, bananas have long been a supermarket staple for consumers around the globe. But that could soon change, as climate change is contributing to a global shortage of the world's most consumed fruit.
Shifting climate patterns—including warming temperatures and humidity—are exposing crops around the world to diseases. 'This has been going on for many, many years,' says Mohammad Abu-Ghazaleh, chairman and CEO of the agriculture company Fresh Del Monte. 'It hasn't happened overnight.'
Two known diseases, Black Sigatoka and Tropical Race 4, are already present in key growing regions around the world, including Colombia and Peru, and experts expect that further spread of disease will have a large impact on supply over time. 'This is a trend which will continue to accelerate,' Abu-Ghazaleh says. He estimates it will take about two or three decades for supply chains to be majorly disrupted, 'unless there is some solution to the diseases that are overtaking the plantations in many parts of the world.'
The banana industry employs more than one million workers globally— and is expected to be hard hit by the climate crisis. A study published in March in Nature Food found that rising temperatures and socio-economic constraints such as access to export markets and government subsidies could reduce the areas suitable for growing by 60% in Latin America and the Caribbean. Currently, the two regions are responsible for 80% of banana exports for supermarkets around the world.
Bananas are the fourth most important food crop globally, with more than 400 million people relying on the fruit for 15% to 27% of their daily calories, and they're not the only crop at risk. The looming banana shortage is just one way that climate change is going to threaten food security over the next several decades. Other staple crops, including corn, soybeans, rice, and wheat are likely to face shortages as hotter days reduce yields.
'Very hot days… even for small amounts of time during the entire growing season, can cause large losses in the yield you get from a given plot of land at the end of the growing season,' says Andrew Hultgren, assistant professor of agricultural and consumer economics at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign.
Climate models show that mitigation efforts are the best ways we can reduce climate impacts on our food supply. 'Mitigation of warming, mitigation of our fossil fuel consumption, is probably one of the most effective things we can do to protect the future of global agriculture,' says Hultgren.
A shortage doesn't necessarily mean empty shelves at the grocery store—but it does mean higher prices. 'If there's just less [bananas] being produced, that means prices are higher, and that to consumers is going to feel like inflation,' says Hultgren. Banana prices have been on the rise this year—rising 3.3% in May as the Trump Administration introduced new tariffs.
For banana lovers, one silver lining remains. Though banana prices might be on the rise, experts predict that bananas will keep their title as the most affordable fruit. 'I think that even over the next decade or so, the banana will still be the cheapest fruit on the shelf,' says Abu-Ghazaleh, whose company is a major fruit supplier. "The consumer will still have the opportunity to enjoy a very affordable fruit compared to any other.'

Trump vows US ban on wind and solar projects as energy bills soar: ‘Days of stupidity are over'

President Donald Trump declared war on renewable energy Tuesday, vowing the federal government will block new wind and solar projects while electricity bills across America skyrocket at twice the rate of inflation. 'Any State that has built and relied on WINDMILLS and SOLAR for power are seeing RECORD BREAKING INCREASES IN ELECTRICITY AND ENERGY COSTS. THE SCAM OF THE CENTURY!' Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. 'We will not approve wind or farmer destroying Solar. The days of stupidity are over in the USA!!! MAGA'. The days of stupidity are over in the USA!!! MAGA,' Trump wrote on Truth Social. @realDonaldTrump/TruthSocial The fiery proclamation comes as American households face brutal electricity price hikes. So far this year, electricity prices have risen between 5% and 9% — with some states and metro areas facing even higher increases. Advertisement Maine residents saw bills explode 36.3% higher, while Connecticut ratepayers absorbed an 18.4% spike and Utah families faced a 15.2% increases. The Energy Information Administration forecasts electricity prices will climb 13% from 2022 to 2025 — the fastest pace in decades. The average American household's annual bill is expected to rise by about $219 in 2025 versus 2022, to around $1,900/year. Advertisement Surging electricity demand from AI and data centers is a key driver behind soaring bills, along with aging grid infrastructure that utilities are modernizing and passing costs to consumers. Rising natural gas prices — used for power generation — add more upward pressure on rates. 4 Trump didn't mention that surging electricity demand from AI and data centers is a key driver behind soaring bills. Soonthorn – Trump's renewable energy crackdown has already delivered devastating blows to the industry. Advertisement On July 4, he signed into law the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' that kills the popular 30% federal solar tax credit for homeowners. The newly enacted law gives Americans just months to install residential solar systems before losing thousands in tax breaks. His administration also froze the $7 billion Solar for All program, a Biden-era initiative that sought to make solar power accessible to low-income Americans. Trump also slammed the brakes on new wind and solar permits on federal land. Offshore wind leasing got the axe entirely. Trump's Commerce Department escalated the renewable energy offensive in August by extending and increasing tariffs on wind turbines and components. Wind turbines now face a punishing 50% tariff rate across 407 new categories. 4 Trump also slammed the brakes on new wind and solar permits on federal land. Offshore wind leasing got the axe entirely. High-profile casualties include Idaho's Lava Ridge Wind Project and New Jersey's Atlantic Shores development. Projects that already received approval can still be reviewed or revoked under the new rules. Advertisement Trump consistently brands wind and solar as 'expensive' and 'unreliable,' arguing government subsidies burden taxpayers and drive up energy costs. But the renewable energy industry warns these policy reversals threaten thousands of jobs and could slow clean energy growth just as demand explodes from data centers, electric vehicles and artificial intelligence.

Cracker Barrel Logo Redesign Sparks ‘Woke' Backlash

Conservatives have raged against restaurant chain Cracker Barrel on social media after the brand unveiled a new text-only logo that drops the man and the barrel, with some accusing the company of going 'woke' and abandoning its country roots. Cracker Barrel is replacing a logo that included a man and a barrel with a text-only version. (Photo by) Getty Images Cracker Barrel announced its brand redesign on Monday, stating in a press release the new logo is 'rooted even more closely to the iconic barrel shape and word mark that started it all,' referring to Cracker Barrel's original text-only logo in 1969. The new logo arrives about a year after the company embarked on a brand refresh, through which it has reportedly redesigned dozens of restaurants to give them a brighter and more modern feel to attempt to attract new customers. But some conservative social media users had strong reactions to the new logo, including Donald Trump Jr., who posted on X Wednesday night: 'WTF is wrong with @CrackerBarrel??!' Trump made his post in response to another user who blamed Cracker Barrel's CEO Julie Felss Masino, stating she 'scrapped a beloved American aesthetic and replaced it with sterile, soulless branding' while also criticizing the company for its diversity, equity and inclusion commitments. Cracker Barrel shares fell more than 11% on Thursday as of 10 a.m. EDT. Cracker Barrel has not yet responded to backlash to its redesigned logo (Forbes has reached out for comment). Many popular right-wing X accounts united against Cracker Barrel, including End Wokeness, an account with nearly 4 million followers that frequently torches brands for going 'woke.' 'Cracker Barrel CEO Julie Masino should face charges for this crime against humanity,' End Wokeness posted Wednesday night, garnering 50,000 likes. Country singer John Rich, a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, said on X Wednesday night: 'Will you go to Cracker Barrel now that it's going woke? This could be a 'Bud Light' moment in the making…' referencing the 2023 conservative-led boycott against beer company Bud Light after it briefly collaborated with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Benny Johnson, a conservative political commentator who has 5.5 million subscribers on YouTube, posted a video Wednesday night alleging Cracker Barrel has gone 'woke,' slamming Masino as an 'insufferable left-wing elitist' and calling the revamp the 'destruction of a great American brand.' Why Is Cracker Barrel Revamping Its Look? Cracker Barrel announced plans for a brand refresh last year in response to some diners being slow to return to the restaurant after the Covid-19 pandemic. The Wall Street Journal reported the restaurant had struggled to regain its 65-plus diners, among its most loyal customers, and hoped to also attract a younger crowd. Masino, who stepped in as CEO in August 2023, said in a call with investors in May 2024 the brand is 'just not as relevant as we once were.' Masino said the chain would roll out new menu items and remodel restaurants to feature a 'different color palette, updating lighting, offering more comfortable seating and simplifying decor and fixtures.' The Journal reported in May Cracker Barrel had remodeled four restaurants, with plans to remodel an additional 25 to 30 of its 660 locations by the end of this summer. Masino claimed in an interview with Good Morning America on Tuesday she has received positive feedback on the remodelings from customers and store managers. In the announcement of its new logo Monday, Cracker Barrel announced new fall menu options and a collaboration with country singer Jordan Davis, who will host an event in New York City on Thursday. 'Our story hasn't changed. Our values haven't changed,' Cracker Barrel's chief marketing officer Sarah Moore said, adding the company is 'honoring our legacy while bringing fresh energy, thoughtful craftsmanship and heartfelt hospitality to our guests this fall.' This isn't the first time Cracker Barrel has faced right-wing outrage. In 2023, the restaurant chain faced backlash during Pride Month after it made posts on social media celebrating its LGBTQ customers. The Texas Family Project, a conservative organization, said in a post on X: 'We take no pleasure in reporting that @CrackerBarrel has fallen,' which became a widely memed phrase. The company had openly supported Pride Month for several years, and still maintains a commitment to LGBTQ customers on its website, though the company faced controversy in the 1990s for urging locations in a company memo to not hire people 'whose sexual preference fails to demonstrate normal heterosexual values.' Sony Announces Price Hike For PlayStation 5 Consoles In The U.S., Gamers Blame Donald Trump

Source: Getty Images / PlayStation 5 / Donald Trump It was only a matter of time. Sony is the latest company to raise the price of their video game consoles as economic uncertainty persists due to Donald Trump's unnecessary trade war. Starting next week, the price of the PlayStation 5 console is going up $50, Sony announced on Wednesday. The price of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will increase from $450 to $500, while the PlayStation 5 with a disc drive will now cost $550 from $500. The PlayStation 5 Pro model will also see a price increase and will now cost $750, up from $700. This dreadful news for gamers, who have yet to purchase a PS5 console, comes after Orange Mussolini's sweeping and unnecessary tariffs went into effect in April, hitting most countries. We care about your data. See our privacy policy. The United States currently has a 30% tariff on imports from China. Still, according to the administration, Trump, aka TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out), 'paused' higher tariffs on goods coming from the world's second-largest economy. Japan, home to Sony, was hit with a 15% tariff. In the company's statement announcing the price increase, Sony didn't flat-out say Trump's tariffs were the reason for its decision, but companies have been warning for months about price hikes. 'Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment.' The company also stated that prices for PlayStation 5 accessories like controllers will remain unchanged. Gamers & Democrats Are Blaming Donald Trump For The PlayStation 5 Price Hikes While Sony didn't say it was all Trump's fault, gamers and Democrat politicians were quick to blame Felon 47 for the PlayStation 5 price hike. 'GREAT WORK, DONALD TRUMP, RAISING PRICES FOR ALL AMERICANS AND MAKING GOODS AND SERVICES MORE EXPENSIVE! IF NOT FOR YOUR NEGOTIATING SKILLS AND MANY BANKRUPTCIES, HOW WOULD WE ALL MANAGE?! THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORK INCREASING THE COST OF LIVING SIR!,' Rep. Jamie Raskin wrote on X, formerly Twitter. California Governor and current expert Donald Trump troller, Gavin Newsom, wrote on X, 'In Trump's America, costs keep going up, up, up!' Sony joins Microsoft, which raised the price of its Xbox gaming consoles, and Nintendo, which raised the cost of the original Nintendo Switch model. Just another reason we cannot stand Donald Trump.
