Kochi, Aug 19 (PTI) Civets on Tuesday caused the halting of proceedings in the court of Kerala Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar on Tuesday morning following the 'unbearable bad smell" from the mammals urinating in the false ceiling of the courtroom.
The urgent and new matters in the court's list were taken up quickly and adjourned to other dates by the division bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji and then the room was closed for cleaning, court sources said.
A senior government pleader who was present in the court said that the civet urine smell issue had been there for the past few days, but since Monday afternoon it had become 'unbearable".
'Today morning also the smell was very bad. So the urgent matters and those on the 'today's list' were quickly taken up by the bench and after that the courtroom was closed around 11.30 am for cleaning," the lawyer said.
It was not clear whether the court would resume hearings during the day of the other matters on its list.
He also said that traps had been laid a day ago to catch the civets and one of them was found trapped in it on Tuesday morning.
'The civets were holed up in the false ceiling of the Chief Justice's courtroom and had urinated there," he added. PTI HMP HMP KH

Here to give an opinion, not overrule Tamil Nadu Governor case judgment: Presidential Reference Bench
The five judges on a Bench hearing a Presidential Reference said on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) they have no intention to 'pronounce a judgment on the Tamil Nadu Governor case judgment' or overrule it. The Bench headed by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai said its ambit was limited to give an 'opinion' on the questions raised by the President in a Reference issued under Article 143 of the Constitution. The President has primarily questioned the court's power to impose timelines on her and the Governors, and grant deemed assent to Bills if they did not act within the deadline. Supreme Court hearing on Presidential Reference updates on August 19, 2025 The Reference was issued merely a month after the Supreme Court, in a case filed by the State of Tamil Nadu against its Governor. set three-month timelines for the President and the Governors to clear State Bills. 'We will only be expressing our view on the questions of law raised in the Reference, and not pronounce a judgment in the Tamil Nadu case,' Chief Justice Gavai addressed the Centre and Attorney General R. Venkataramani, who are supporting the Reference. Tamil Nadu, represented by senior advocates A.M. Singhvi and P. Wilson, and senior advocate K.K. Venugopal and advocate C.K. Sasi, for Kerala, raised preliminary objections to the very maintainability of the Presidential Reference, arguing that the Tamil Nadu Governor case judgment was binding on all under Article 141 of the Constitution. The two States submitted that an 'opinion' given by a Presidential Reference Bench in its advisory jurisdiction under Article 143 cannot set aside the 'binding' judgment in the Tamil Nadu case. They argued that the Reference cannot be a substitute for a review or a curative petition against the Tamil Nadu judgment. 'Presidential References like this could make serious inroads into judicial independence. It could be used as an indirect endeavour to overturn Supreme Court judgments without going through constitutional proceedings like the review and curative,' Mr. Singhvi contended. Mr. Venugopal submitted that questions raised in the Reference have been comprehensively answered in the April 8 judgment in the Tamil Nadu case. Justice Surya Kant assured the two States that the five-judge Bench was sitting in its advisory jurisdiction, and not as an Appellate Bench over a Supreme Court judgment. 'We can give an opinion about a judgment, but we cannot overrule it,' Justice Kant made a fine point. eom

Over 50,000 applications received for admission to CM Shri Schools in Delhi
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) The Delhi government has received more than 50,000 applications for admission to the CM Shri Schools within a few days of its launch, an official statement said. According to the statement, the admission process for these schools began on August 15 and the overwhelming response reflects the growing trust of parents in the initiative. The Education Department data showed that 14,928 applications were received for Class 6, 15,114 for Class 7 and 20,762 for Class 8. Education Minister Ashish Sood said the government will ensure a transparent and smooth admission process. He described the response as 'a strong endorsement" to the government's efforts to provide quality education through modern infrastructure and innovative teaching methods. The government has projected CM Shri Schools as institutions equipped with state-of-the-art facilities aimed at nurturing academic growth and holistic development of students. Sood further said the large number of applications underlines the community's confidence in the government's vision to set new benchmarks in school education. Designated as 'Specified Category" institutions under Section 2 of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, the CM SHRI schools are aimed at creating model public schools with modern infrastructure and innovative teaching practices aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. CM Shri schools are likely to be inaugurated in September, a Delhi government official said, as preparations to operationalise the institutions gather pace. Announced earlier this year, the initiative, aims to offer high-quality, future-ready education in government schools. The CM Shri schools, modelled after the Centre's PM Shri schools, will follow the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and implement the National Curriculum Framework 2023. These institutions are being developed with a focus on sustainability, operating as zero-waste and solar-powered campuses, officials informed. Each school will be equipped with AI-enabled libraries, smart classrooms featuring augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) tools, smartboards, biometric attendance systems and robotics laboratories to promote innovation among students. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had allocated Rs 100 crore for the CM Shri schools in her budget speech earlier this year. BJD accuses vote discrepancies in Odisha polls, warns EC of hitting streets
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 19 (PTI) Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Amar Patnaik on Tuesday accused the Election Commission (EC) of ignoring serious discrepancies in votes polled and counted during last year's Odisha elections, alleging its approach was 'my way or the highway" and warning that it is ready to take to the streets. Addressing a press conference shortly after meeting EC officials, Patnaik warned that since the poll body continues to brush aside concerns and ask parties to 'go to court", the BJD will not confine itself to legal remedies and is prepared to take to the streets in protest. 'The Commission insists that whatever it is doing is right, and if anything goes wrong, they blame political parties or their booth agents," Patnaik said. 'The Election Commission takes the 'my way or highway' approach, which is unacceptable to us, and we will take to the streets of Odisha if needed," he said. The BJD said it will move the Odisha High Court after its repeated requests since December 2024 failed to yield Form 17C, the statutory record of booth-wise voting. Patnaik said the absence of this data raises questions about 'gross discrepancies" between polled and counted votes, which the Commission has so far not explained with evidence. Citing 'unusual jumps" in turnout, he pointed out that in 50 per cent of Odisha's constituencies, polling percentages rose between 15 and 30 per cent after 5 pm, with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi's Keonjhar seat recording a 30 per cent spike, and 10 per cent of it after 11.45 pm. Patnaik reiterated demands for a process audit of the electoral system, 100 per cent VVPAT-EVM matching and timely supply of Form 17C. He cautioned that hurried deletions during electoral roll revisions risk disenfranchising genuine voters. 'People of Odisha expect fairness and transparency. If the Election Commission continues with perfunctory replies instead of addressing discrepancies, we will not only pursue legal remedies but also take to the streets," he declared.
