Now Ryanair pay staff bonuses to catch out passengers with oversized cabin bags - after EasyJet introduced similar incentive

Daily Mail20-07-2025
Ryanair is paying staff bonuses to catch out passengers who try to sneak oversized cabin bags onto flights – and they can make up to €80 a month just from enforcing the strict rules.
A leaked payslip shows how one former employee earned a 'gate bag bonus' for flagging up bags that broke the airline's famously tight size restrictions.
The ex-worker claimed they pocketed around €1.50 (£1.30) for every oversized bag they reported, according to the Sunday Times, although they said the monthly bonus was capped.
Ryanair, which made a staggering €13 billion in revenue last year, confirmed on Saturday that staff are financially rewarded for flagging bags that breach the rules – with passengers charged up to €75 for each oversized item caught at the gate.
But despite confirming the scheme, the airline refused to say exactly how much staff are paid as part of this 'gate bag bonus'.
A Ryanair spokesperson said: 'We do pay commission to our agents who identify and charge for oversized bags, but these fees are paid by less than 0.1 per cent of passengers who don't comply with our agreed bags rules.
'Our message to those 0.1 per cent of passengers is simple: please comply with our generous bag rules or you will be charged at check-in or at the gate.
'For the 99.9 per cent of our passengers who comply with our rules we say thank you and keep flying as you have nothing to worry about.'
Currently, Ryanair allows just one small bag measuring 40 x 20 x 25cm free of charge, as long as it fits under the seat. A second, larger cabin bag (up to 10kg) comes with a fee starting at €6.
But change is on the horizon. The airline said earlier this month that it will increase the size of free hand luggage to 40 x 30 x 20cm – in line with upcoming EU rules banning airlines from charging for small carry-ons. However, those regulations haven't yet come into effect.
The revelation of Ryanair's bonus scheme comes just months after the airline's chief marketing officer Dara Brady claimed no such commissions were being paid.
Speaking in April to Ireland's Virgin Media News, he insisted: 'We don't pay our staff commission for bags. [The policy] is about protecting the amount of bags we can bring on board.
'We can only take a limited amount of bags on board, so our staff have to be very conscious of the bag sizes that people are taking. I reiterate that there's been no change in the Ryanair bag policy and if people travel with the right size bags, well you'll have a great flight with Ryanair.'
But Ryanair isn't the only airline profiting from passengers' luggage slip-ups.
An internal email leaked earlier this year revealed that easyJet was also running a bonus scheme for staff who enforce its own baggage rules.
The message, sent to employees at Swissport, which manages gates for easyJet at several UK airports, confirmed agents would earn £1.20 per oversized bag caught at the gate – £1 after tax.
The 'easyJet gate bag revenue incentive' is reportedly still running at airports including Belfast, Birmingham, Glasgow, Jersey, Liverpool, and Newcastle.
Swissport's Dean Martin, a station manager at Glasgow Airport, wrote that the payments were designed to 'reward agents doing the right thing'.
And it doesn't stop there. At airports like Gatwick, Bristol, and Manchester, DHL Supply Chain workers are also believed to be getting a 'nominal amount' per oversized bag detected.

Amazon and Microsoft harming competition in cloud computing, finds CMA

The UK's cloud computing market is 'not working well' and conduct requirements should be considered for the sector's two main players, Microsoft and Amazon, according the competition watchdog. The final report from an independent inquiry group of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has found that Microsoft and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are hurting competition in the cloud computing sector. Microsoft came under particular fire, with the panel's report saying it has 'significant market power' with some of its software products. It raised concerns over the way Microsoft charges Amazon and Google to use its software, which it said is driving up costs. The report recommends that the CMA uses new powers to give Microsoft and AWS so-called strategic market status in order to 'remedy the harms to competition that we have found'. 'This would enable the CMA to impose targeted and bespoke interventions to address the concerns we have identified, including with respect to features where there are specification risks around the design of effective market interventions,' according to the report. The CMA will now launch a probe into whether to hand them 'strategic market status', but this would not start until 2026 as it focuses efforts on proposals announced last week to assign this status to Google and Apple over their mobile platforms. The panel found that a lack of competition in the £9 billion cloud sector could be leading to higher costs, less choice and innovation, and a lower quality of services for businesses across the UK. AWS and Microsoft's Azure each have up to around a 40% share of consumer spend in the market, with Google lagging behind in third place. On Microsoft, the report said: 'Microsoft's licensing practices are adversely impacting the competitiveness of AWS and Google in the supply of cloud services, particularly in competing for customers that purchase cloud services which use the relevant Microsoft software as an input. 'As a result, Microsoft faces weaker competitive constraints from AWS and Google, its most significant competitors, which is reducing competition in cloud services markets.' Annual results from Microsoft on Wednesday showed booming sales in its Azure cloud computing business, with revenues for the division surpassing 75 billion US dollars (£57 billion) on an annual basis. A Microsoft spokesperson said: 'The CMA panel's most recent publication misses the mark again, ignoring that the cloud market has never been so dynamic and competitive, with record investment and rapid, AI-driven changes. 'Its recommendations fail to cover Google, one of the fastest-growing cloud market participants. 'Microsoft looks forward to working with the digital markets unit toward an outcome that more accurately reflects the current competition in cloud that benefits UK customers.' A spokesperson for AWS said the report 'disregards clear evidence of robust competition in the UK's IT services industry'. They added: 'The action proposed by the inquiry group is unwarranted and undermines the substantial investment and innovation that have already benefited hundreds of thousands of UK businesses. 'It risks making the UK a global outlier at a time when businesses need regulatory predictability for the UK to maintain international competitiveness.'

New Skoda Octavia Electric previewed by Vision O concept

Skoda has been trotting out excellent estate cars for decades now, but the new Vision O concept shows the Czech firm is looking to enter the all-electric estate market. This is our first official teaser of the Vision O, which is set to be unveiled at the Munich Motor Show in September. To ensure Skoda's forthcoming electric estate car will be just as competitive as its internal combustion-engined alternatives when it goes into production, it'll also be the first Skoda to use the Volkswagen Group's new SSP architecture. Advertisement - Article continues below The new EV estate was originally due to be built on a lengthened version of the existing MEB platform. However, since we got an official look at the car with a design sculpture in 2023, Skoda has decided to use SSP for the electric estate. Can't wait for the electric Octavia? Our Find A Car service can help you find the latest deals on a new Skoda Octavia or top prices on used Skoda Octavia models... Skoda says the Vision O's design will present 'a consistent evolution of the Modern Solid design language' and it'll feature 'a sleek, distinctive silhouette'. The proportions look similar to the current Octavia Estate's, although the rear window appears to be a little more raked. We can also see some of the car's light signatures: the rears in particular look similar to those on the design study for Skoda's upcoming small eletric car, the Epiq. We also expect to see some form of Skoda's Tech-Deck front end that features on the facelifted Enyaq and new Elroq. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below The company's CEO, Klaus Zellmer, added: 'The Vision O design study will highlight the future trajectory of estate models. It will position us to remain a major player in the estate segment.' Advertisement - Article continues below It's not yet known if the Vision O previews an electric alternative to the Skoda Octavia Estate, the Superb Estate, or both, although the new model is said to be around 4.7 metres long. That puts it more in line with the current Octavia than the larger Superb, yet by capitalising on its cab-forward design, the upcoming EV has the potential to offer more interior space than both its combustion-powered counterparts. The interior will share the exterior's simplified and modernised aesthetic and could potentially incorporate a portrait-aspect central display, like the one seen in the 7S Concept. However, Skoda should continue with its Smart Dials layout and retain most of the physical dials and buttons – just as we've seen in the current Superb and Kodiaq. We don't expect the production version of the Vision O to go on sale for a few years – and Skoda may yet decide to extend the lifespan of its petrol and hybrid estates. That strategy could align with parent company Volkswagen's Golf, the electric variant of which will sit on the same SSP architecture as the Skoda estate.
