Sabrina Ionescu makes 7 free throws late as Liberty hold off Valkyries 81-78

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Sabrina Ionescu converted seven free throws in the final two minutes and made a key steal with 26 seconds left, Breanna Stewart had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and the New York Liberty held off the Golden State Valkyries 81-78 on Wednesday night.
Ionescu struggled to find her shooting rhythm returning from a neck injury and wound up 1 of 11 for 11 points in her Bay Area homecoming not far from where she grew up in the East Bay suburb of Walnut Creek. She regularly attended Warriors games.
Ionescu was 0 for 5 at halftime missing all four of her 3s. She finally connected on her first field goal, a 3-pointer, with 9 minutes left
Kate Martin hit a tying 3-pointer with 4:12 remaining and put the Valkyries ahead on a 3 at the 1:59 mark before Ionescu's free throws. Martin's 3 with 12 seconds to go made it a one-point game but Martin and Kayla Thornton missed two late 3s.
Stewart scored 21 of her points by halftime and Kennedy Burke added 20 points off the bench.
The Liberty (11-3) had lost three out of four after winning their first nine games — including the first two meetings against the expansion Valkyries on May 27 and 29 in Brooklyn.
In the first two matchups, Stewart had 51 points on 16-for-26 shooting while converting 18 of 25 free throws, her highest output against any opponent Ne York has faced more than once.
Martin finished with 21 points for the Valkyries, who had won two straight and five of six and sold out their eighth straight game at Chase Center, where they are 5-3.
Golden State welcomed back center Temi Fagbenle after her absence to play for Great Britain in the EuroBasket 2025 tournament, but she was held out of action to rest after the long travel.
Valkyries guard Carla Leite missed the game because of a back injury. Up next
The Liberty continue their four-game road trip at Phoenix on Friday night, when the Valkyries will host the Chicago Sky.

Swiss skier Lara Gut-Behrami retiring after upcoming Olympic season
ZURICH (AP) — Two-time overall World Cup champion Lara Gut-Behrami intends on retiring after the upcoming Olympic season. The Swiss skier revealed her plans at a sponsor's event in Zurich. The 34-year-old Gut-Behrami said she wants to move to London next year to join her husband, former Switzerland international Valon Behrami, who she said was taking over as sporting director at English soccer club Watford. 'I certainly won't be a cleaning lady,' Gut-Behrami said this week, while hinting she would like to become a mother. Gut-Behrami won her overall titles in 2015-16 and 2023-24 and has 48 World Cup victories — good for fifth on the all-time women's list. She also won gold in super-G and bronze in giant slalom at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, plus a bronze in downhill at the 2014 Sochi Games. One of Gut-Behrami's best performances came at the 2021 world championships in Cortina d'Ampezzo, where she swept gold in super-G and giant slalom and took bronze in downhill. Cortina will host women's skiing in the Winter Games in February, which would be Gut-Behrami's fourth Olympics. She missed the 2010 Vancouver Games due to injury. Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova an injury doubt for Wimbledon
EASTBOURNE, England (AP) — Barbora Krejcikova is an injury doubt ahead of her Wimbledon title defense after withdrawing from the Eastbourne Open on Thursday due to a right thigh issue. Krejcikova gave Varvara Gracheva of France a walkover win in the quarterfinals at Devonshire Park. The Czech initially felt pain on Wednesday during her second-round victory over Jodie Burrage of Britain. The problem worsened overnight and she was going for a scan. Her opening match at Wimbledon is scheduled for Tuesday. 'I'm very sorry to have to withdraw from my quarterfinal today in Eastbourne as I'm having some soreness in my right thigh,' Krejcikova said in a statement. 'Overnight it just didn't get any better; it actually got worse. I think it's better with Wimbledon in the next couple of days just to rest it and to see what's going on and to resolve that.' Krejcikova played two tough three-set singles against British wild cards on the south coast. The second seed saved two match points against Harriet Dart and three more against Burrage. Krejcikova beat Jasmine Paolini in the Wimbledon final last year.
