Assam: Health Minister reviews preparedness for International Day of Yoga

Dr. P. Ashok Babu, Commissioner and Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, and Ms. Indranoshi Das, Director, AYUSH, Assam, attended the meeting.
In his address, the Minister emphasised that yoga is not only for June 21, but should be practised daily throughout the year. He urged all district officials to conduct awareness activities and promote yoga as an essential part of daily life.
He added that the celebration of IDY should be transformed from a routine event into a vibrant public festival that involves every section of society.
The International Day of Yoga is celebrated globally on June 21 every year. The date was chosen because it marks the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
According to the release, this year, the 11th International Day of Yoga will be observed with the theme "
Yoga for One Earth
, One Health," which underlines the deep connection between personal well-being and the planet's health.
The state-level central celebration of IDY 2025 in Assam will be held in Salbari, Baksa district. The venue was jointly reviewed by the Director of AYUSH and the Deputy Commissioner of Baksa. As stated in the release, the Chief Minister later approved it for the main celebration on June 21.
All district administrations have been directed to extend full support and ensure wide public participation and visibility for the event.
Alongside the central celebration, district and co-district level programs will be organised across all 35 districts of Assam. These include yoga demonstrations, awareness drives, cultural programs, and competitions.
Schools, colleges, panchayats, and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs will be crucial in engaging people at the grassroots level.
As part of the grand celebration of International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025, the Ministry of AYUSH is launching several transformative initiatives to deepen public engagement and global outreach.
A synchronised mass yoga demonstration called Yoga Sangama will take place at 1,00,000 locations across the globe, aiming to set a new world record. Strengthening international collaboration, Yoga Bandhan will see partnerships with 10 countries to host yoga sessions at iconic global landmarks.
To promote long-term community engagement, 1,000 Yoga Parks will be developed nationwide. Inclusivity will be a key focus through Yoga Samavesh, offering special yoga programs for Divyangjan, senior citizens, children, and marginalised groups.
A long-term impact review titled Yoga Prabhava will assess the role of yoga in public health over the past decade.
The Yoga Connect Virtual Global Summit will bring together leading yoga experts and healthcare professionals worldwide. Harit Yoga will promote sustainability, combining yoga sessions with tree-planting and cleanliness drives.
To attract younger generations, Yoga Unplugged will host engaging, youth-focused events and challenges. A large-scale Yoga Maha Kumbh celebration will unfold as a week-long festival at 10 locations, culminating in a central event led by the Prime Minister.
The Samyogam initiative will also run for 100 days, integrating yoga practices with modern healthcare to promote holistic wellness across communities.
A select number of these events will also be carried out in various parts of Assam to encourage community participation, focusing on youth and public involvement. Special countdown programs will be organised in the lead-up to June 21.
A Yoga Asana Competition based on the Common Yoga Protocol will be conducted in four age groups in all districts. The District Commissioner will supervise the program and coordinate with the District Nodal Officer (AYUSH), with support from AYUSH officials and NGOs.
All participants will receive certificates, and the winners will be awarded on the day of the celebration in the presence of local dignitaries.
The Health Minister urged all officials to collaborate actively with educational institutions, the Armed Forces, NCC, NSS, local bodies, NGOs, and yoga organisations to ensure inclusive participation from all age groups and communities.
A full-fledged media campaign will be launched soon using print, digital, and outdoor platforms to raise awareness and encourage regular yoga practice among citizens.

BENGALURU: While the Chinnaswamy Stadium tragedy that claimed 11 young lives is shocking, another possible tragedy may be in waiting — a massive surge in Covid-19 cases in Bengaluru. The lakhs-strong gatherings on Wednesday — of about 1 lakh in front of Vidhana Soudha — for the felicitation of the IPL 2025 champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team — and about 3 lakhs around M Chinnaswamy Stadium who were trying to attend the celebrations inside the stadium — were in complete contradiction to the Covid Appropriate Behaviour (CAB) advisory that the Karnataka government itself had issued on May 23, even as the cases were rising. Incidentally, on Wednesday, the fateful day when the large gatherings led to the fatal stampede, the Health and Family Welfare Department reported a massive jump in the number of Covid cases from 53 to 153, while the positivity rate was 25.8% and the case fatality rate was 1.3%. The state has recorded seven deaths so far in the latest Covid surge as of Thursday. The state health department issued a clear advisory on May 23, warning of a steady rise in Covid cases. The advisory had urged the public to strictly follow CAB, especially in crowded places. Vulnerable groups were specifically advised to wear masks. It also recommended hand hygiene and use of sanitizers. And yet, the government that issued this warning went on to organise one of the largest mass gatherings just days later at the felicitation on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha — with no safety measures. Although the advisory had called for caution, the State Government itself threw that very caution to the winds. The teeming crowds near Chinnaswamy Stadium featured no distancing, masking, or health protocols in place, while doctors and medical experts explained that such gatherings create 'vulnerable clusters' which contributes to the Covid infection surges. When The New Indian Express questioned Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao about this, he said there are currently no mandatory protocols in place for masking or crowd control, except for those who are immunocompromised. 'Even the Government of India hasn't issued any specific restrictions at this point. If you look at it that way, every cricket match is a large gathering — and there are no curbs on such events right now,' Rao said.

New Delhi: The newly launched Ayush Nivesh Saarthi portal is rooted in tradition and signals India's readiness for holistic healthcare, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said. Developed by the Ministry of Ayush in collaboration with Invest India, Ayush Nivesh Saarthi is a dedicated, investor-centric digital platform. It brings together policy frameworks, incentive structures, investment-ready projects, and real-time facilitation under one unified interface. It is designed to support both domestic and global investors, the platform is a strategic tool that strengthens India's standing as a global investment destination for traditional systems of medicine. The Ayush Nivesh Saarthi portal was launched on May 29 during the Ayush stakeholder/industry interaction meeting held at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi. The historic move positions India as the global epicentre for traditional medicine and wellness. 'With 100 per cent FDI permitted in the Ayush sector through the automatic route, the launch of Ayush Nivesh Saarthi is a signal to the world that India is open for investment, collaboration, and innovation in holistic healthcare,' said Piyush Goyal, during the launch. 'India's Ayush ecosystem is rooted in deep tradition but is powered by modern vision. Through this portal, we are not only connecting investors with opportunities but with India's ancient legacy of wellness,' he added. The Ayush industry has emerged as one of the fastest-growing sectors in the country, recording an annual growth of 17 per cent between 2014 and 2020. With rising global consumer interest in natural, preventive, and wellness-based healthcare, Ayush is at the forefront of a new wave in global health and lifestyle transformation. 'Ayush Nivesh Saarthi is more than a digital platform -- it is an enabler of transformation. It brings together the government's proactive policies, India's natural wealth of over 8,000 medicinal plant species, and a globally trusted wellness tradition,' said Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush. State pitches for wellness tourism, summit today
1 2 3 Bhopal: Inspired by PM Narendra Modi's slogan of 'Heal in India', the state is gearing up to position itself as a leading destination for spiritual and wellness tourism, with a high-profile summit in Ujjain on Thursday. Organised by the departments of happiness, tourism and AYUSH, the one-day event will showcase the state, especially Ujjain, as a hub for holistic health, traditional healing and inner well-being. Besides, the summit will focus on attracting investment and fostering collaboration across sectors such as yoga, ayurveda, naturopathy, public wellness and spirituality. Located in the heart of India, Ujjain is famous as an ancient and religious city. "Due to its peaceful environment, natural resources and traditional healing systems, it is an ideal location for the wellness sector," an official said. Renowned spiritual saints/practitioners, key investors in the wellness sector, policy-makers, Ayush and health experts, wellness and tourism operators will participate in the event. CM Mohan Yadav will also hold one-on-one meetings with major investors, policymakers and representatives of other relevant institutions participating in the summit. An official of the MP Tourism Development Corporation said: "Madhya Pradesh is developing itself as a wellness hub, leveraging its diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage to attract wellness tourism. The state is actively promoting yoga, meditation, ayurveda, and naturopathy centres and plans to develop specific locations like Amarkantak and Pachmaas as wellness destinations." The 'Hridayam MP' initiative emphasises the use of digital technologies like AI and telemedicine to enhance the wellness tourism experience. Besides, the state's natural bounty and diverse landscapes, including forests, rivers, and hills, are being used to create a rejuvenating and transformative wellness experience. The state is also promoting medical value tourism, attracting international patients seeking affordable and effective treatments. "Overall, MP is making significant strides in positioning itself as a premier destination for wellness and spiritual tourism, leveraging its natural resources, cultural heritage, and strategic initiatives to create a vibrant and attractive wellness ecosystem," the official said.
