Unified Holy Mass: Circular read out in most parishes of Ekm-Angamaly archdiocese

Time of India29-06-2025
Kochi: Syro-Malabar Church's circular outlining a set of guidelines to resolve the row over implementing the uniform mode of Holy Mass in Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese was read out in churches on Sunday.
The circular was issued with a directive to be read out during Sunday mass on June 29. The priests of the archdiocese, who were on a warpath with the official leadership, would ignore circulars from bishops until recently. However, the latest circular was read out in most churches, sources said.
As per an agreement following discussions, the Church appointed a new curia for the archdiocese. Fr Jimmy Poochakatt, Fr Anto Cheramthiruthi, Fr Jose Puthiyedath, Fr Antony Vazhakala, Fr Paul Meledath and Fr Thomas Vaikathuparamban are the new curia members.
According to the circular, a unified Holy Mass should be offered in all parish churches on Sundays and other days of obligation. This arrangement is to commence on July 3, starting from the feast of Dukrana. The uniform Holy Mass should be conducted between 5.30am and 10.30am or between 3.30pm and 6.00pm. In all churches and during all Masses, a Bema should be used as prescribed in the Holy Mass text too. The circular promised that the issues concerning priests, currently subject to disciplinary actions, would be amicably resolved considering canonical legal possibilities.

Church keeps up heat on govt over nuns arrest

Kochi: The Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese on Thursday held a massive protest rally and demonstration in Angamaly against the arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh on allegations of human trafficking and forced religious conversion. Thousands, including priests, nuns and laypeople, assembled in solidarity with the imprisoned nuns, Sr Vandhana Francis and Sr Preethi Mary. The protest, which began at Angamaly East Church and concluded at St Joseph School grounds, was marked by strong statements against the Chhattisgarh govt and what Church leaders called an unconstitutional misuse of anti-conversion laws. Delivering the central message, Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany termed the arrest of the two nuns—members of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI), an order founded to serve leprosy patients—as an act of "brutality" supported by the govt. "You have hurled mud at goodness and tried to blind the light in its eyes," he said. "The anti-conversion law is a violation of human rights and unconstitutional. Only if this law is repealed will we believe that the ruling party cares for the country, secularism, and minorities. We are making this clear to the govt," he said. "We always have the courage to call a spade a spade. No one should misunderstand us as having forgotten the ideals of the gospel just because someone brings sweets. We will welcome you when you come to meet us but that does not mean that we have mortgaged our integrity. We will still call a wrong a wrong, and hooliganism hooliganism and it is good that all leaders understand this," Pamplani said The archbishop also pointed out that anti-conversion laws introduced in 11 states violated the religious freedoms enshrined in Articles 25 to 28 of the Constitution. "When the Constitution grants the right to believe in and propagate any religion, the law passed in 11 states states that forced conversions are prohibited. However, we are in days of fear as the criteria for what constitutes a forced conversion are determined by some anti-social and extremist organizations," he said. Fr Kuriakose Mundadan, who gave the introductory message, claimed that the women who were with the nuns were intimidated into making statements against them. He said the sisters, who had dedicated their lives to serving people across castes and religions, were now unjustly imprisoned. Deepa Baiju, the sister-in-law of Sr Preethi Mary, also addressed the crowd, along with several Church leaders. Meanwhile, the Varapuzha Archdiocese announced a similar protest in Kochi on Saturday, led by archbishop Dr Joseph Kalathiparambil at Mother Teresa Square, High Court Junction.

Central Travancore sees huge protests by Churches over nuns' incarceration

The prolonged incarceration of two Keralite nuns on forced conversion charges has ignited a wave of protest against the Sangh Parivar in central Travancore, signalling a fierce return of organised resistance under Church leadership after years of silence. A massive gathering of faithful at Bharananganam on Wednesday evening, organised by the Pala Diocese of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, marked a key moment in the unfolding protest. Addressing the crowd, Bishop Joseph Kallarangatt of Pala Diocese issued a strong warning that if the nuns continue to be held without just cause, the protest would escalate to the gates of Parliament. 'This is a moment when the Christian community in India, especially in Kerala, is awakening from its slumber,' the Bishop declared. The wave of protest is rapidly spreading across the region. The Idukki diocese held a massive demonstration in Kattappana on Thursday, while the Kothamangalam diocese is set to stage a similar protest in Thodupuzha on Friday. Signalling a broader mobilisation, the Syro-Malankara Church will lead a united march of all episcopal churches in Pathanamthitta on August 3. These major events are in addition to numerous parish- and regional-level protests and prayer meetings being held throughout the region. 'This is the first time in several years that the region is witnessing such large-scale, organised protests under Church leadership. The last time we saw such mobilisation was during the agitation against the Gadgil and Kasturirangan Committee reports,' noted a senior Catholic prelate. Meanwhile, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church also voiced its dissent on Thursday. Senior clergy, including the Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, staged a demonstration at the church headquarters in Kottayam against the arrest of the nuns. 'On one side, appeasement; on the other, persecution -- this is a classic case of trying to sail in two boats at once. One is forced to ask whether the central government is truly incapable of controlling extremist religious groups or is it the fear of losing their support base, that holds them back?' asked the Catholicos.
