PM calls for national agri-innovation plan and regulatory overhaul

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday directed the relevant authorities to formulate a sustainable, long-term policy for agro-industrial development to promote agriculture and forestry—key sectors in mitigating the impact of climate change, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
While chairing a meeting on agricultural sector reforms, the prime minister emphasised that the government is focused on modernising agriculture to achieve self-sufficiency. He instructed officials to devise a coordinated strategy in consultation with the provinces and all relevant stakeholders.
Highlighting the vast potential of Pakistan's agricultural sector for rapid economic development, the prime minister noted that the country is endowed with fertile land, skilled agricultural experts, and hardworking farmers.

He further directed that agricultural loans be provided to farmers on easy terms and stressed the importance of boosting agricultural research to enhance productivity.
Additionally, he also instructed the concerned departments to present a National Agri-Innovation Plan aimed at driving innovation across the sector.
The premier also called for the acceleration of ongoing reforms in the certification system for agricultural seeds and the formulation of a comprehensive action plan to promote the use of high-quality seeds.
Underscoring the government's commitment to modernising agriculture, he ordered the development of a robust regulatory framework to support innovation and technology adoption in the sector.
During the meeting, proposals were presented by the working group established for agricultural reforms. The meeting was attended by federal ministers Rana Tanveer Hussain, Ahad Khan Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Musadik Malik, along with senior government officials.
This development comes as Pakistan's agriculture sector is facing significant challenges.
According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) and Topline Research, the sector's growth rate dropped to 1.1% in the second quarter of FY 2024–25, down from 6.1% in the same quarter of FY 2023–24.
The sharp decline has been largely attributed to a 31% fall in cotton production and a 15.4% drop in maize output, both of which are vital to the sector's overall performance.

Additionally, gram crop yields have seen a sharp downturn in the rain-fed Thal region, where prolonged drought and the effects of climate change have devastated hundreds of acres of farmland, pushing local farmers into financial distress.
Earlier this month, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah directed the provincial agriculture department to develop a four-year package for small growers to strengthen the province's agricultural system and support vulnerable farmers.

Security forces eliminate 14 militants in North Waziristan operation: ISPR
Listen to article At least 14 militants allegedly affiliated with Fitna al-Khawarij, a group identified as an Indian proxy, were killed in intellegence-based operations in North Waziristan between June 2 and 3, it emerged on Wednesday. According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), security forces conducted operations in Dhatta Khel area of North Waziristan. "After a fierce exchange of fire, 14 militants affiliated with the Indian-sponsored group were neutralized." Sanitization operations are ongoing in the area to ensure the complete elimination of any remaining threats, said the military's media wing. "Pakistan's armed forces remain resolute in their mission to eradicate Indian-sponsored terrorism and restore lasting peace across the country," the statement added. 'With the professional capability of our security forces, we will uproot the monster of terrorism once and for all.' A similar operation was conducted earlier this week whereby seven terrorists allegedly affiliated with the India-backed group Fitna al-Hindustan were killed in two separate operations in Balochistan on June 2, 2025. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior, the move stems from 'the involvement of some organizations and groups in terrorist activities in Balochistan, which are detrimental to Islamic faith, the sovereignty of Pakistan, and its customary traditions'. The notification further stated that the new designation is intended to reflect 'the true nature and ideology' of these groups and their 'nefarious designs' sponsored by India. 'All government entities are directed to start the above practice immediately,' the notification said, underscoring a concerted effort to reframe the narrative around insurgent violence in the province. The announcement came after Islamabad accused India of escalating indirect aggression after what he described as its defeat in a recent security operation dubbed "Marka-e-Haq'.

Govt to save millions as 155 railway stations in Pakistan go solar
As part of the government's renewable push, a total of 155 railway stations across Pakistan are being shifted to solar energy, which will save the national exchequer millions of rupees. The development came into light during a high-level meeting held on Wednesday at the Prime Minister's House in Islamabad, read a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). During the meeting, Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi briefed the PM on ongoing reforms in Pakistan Railways. The meeting was informed that several discontinued services have been resumed. The Bolan Mail has recently been launched as a daily service, while the Dera Ghazi Khan and Khushhal Khan Khattak Express trains have also been reinstated. It was further shared that outsourcing is underway for concrete sleeper factories located in Sukkur, Khanewal, and Kohat. Moreover, railway hospitals, schools, colleges, and rest houses in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, and Sukkur are also being outsourced under revenue-sharing models. Railways decides to go solar; 100 sites identified The meeting was informed that the Royal Palm Golf and Country Club in Lahore is being auctioned, with the potential to establish a five-star hotel on the site. Digitisation efforts are being fast-tracked as part of the modernisation of the railway system. The restructuring of Pakistan Railways' IT Directorate is progressing rapidly. Organisations including Pakistan Railways Advisory & Consultancy Services, Railcop, Pakistan Railways Freight Transport Company, and the Project Implementation Unit have been dissolved, while railway land worth Rs10 billion has also been recovered. The meeting was informed that, in collaboration with the Punjab government, work is underway on several initiatives, including a high-speed train service between Lahore and Rawalpindi, upgradation of the Lahore and Rawalpindi stations, and suburban train services on eight branch lines within Punjab. The meeting was told that a green belt will be developed along both sides of the Shahdara Bagh to Kot Lakhpat railway line. Additionally, in cooperation with the Balochistan government, the Saryab-Kuchlak and Quetta-Chaman railway line sections will be upgraded. Chairing the meeting, PM Shehbaz Sharif directed the formulation of a strategic plan to expand Pakistan Railways' network to enhance trade ties with Central Asian countries. He also instructed the authorities to expedite efforts to connect Gwadar with the Pakistan Railways network.
