Gaza strike kills children waiting for food, as Israel targets Hamas fighter — bodies line hospital floor as ceasefire hopes dim

Time of India10-07-2025
At least 15 Palestinians including eight children and two women were killed in an Israeli airstrike near a medical point in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, hospital officials report. Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital confirmed the victims had been waiting in line for nutritional supplements. Hospital footage shows medics treating injured individuals and bodies of children and adults lying on the ground.
Israeli military claims militant target, regrets civilian harm
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated it struck a member of Hamas's elite Nukhba forces, who had participated in the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. The IDF acknowledged reports of civilian injuries, expressed regret for collateral impact, and confirmed the event is under review. 'The IDF regrets any harm to uninvolved individuals,' its statement said.
Families react as funeral rituals begin amid civilian toll
Relatives at the hospital morgue wrapped the deceased children in white shrouds and performed funeral prayers. One woman told the BBC that her pregnant niece, Manal, and her daughter, Fatima, were among the deceased, while Manal's son is currently in intensive care. 'She was queuing to get the children supplements when the incident happened, I don't know what happened after that,' she said. Another mourner questioned, 'For what sin were they killed?' and remarked on the high civilian toll: 'We are dying…If people aren't killed by the Israeli army, they die trying to get aid.'

Ongoing ceasefire talks and wider casualties
The strike comes amid indirect ceasefire and hostage release negotiations in Doha involving Israeli and Hamas delegations, with the US, Qatar, and Egypt mediating. Neither side has reported a breakthrough. The UK mentioned that closing the gap could take one to two weeks. Israel is seeking a 60-day ceasefire, during which it would push for Hamas disarmament—or resume military operations if that fails. Hamas described the discussions as difficult and criticized Israeli 'intransigence,' though it expressed flexibility by agreeing to release ten hostages so far.
Broader humanitarian crisis in Gaza
On the same day, other strikes across Gaza reportedly claimed 26 additional lives. Since the October 7 attack in southern Israel, about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. Gaza has seen approximately 57,680 deaths, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The war has driven multiple displacements, destroyed an estimated 90% of homes, and caused collapses in public infrastructure healthcare, water, sanitation—leaving residents facing shortages of food, fuel, medicine, and shelter.

Widespread malnutrition in Gaza: Palestinian woman Marah Abu Zuhri dies in Italy; was evacuated on humanitarian flight

AP file photo A Palestinian woman, who was evacuated from Gaza to Italy for treatment after suffering from extreme malnutrition, has died at a hospital in Pisa, officials said. Marah Abu Zuhri, 20, traveled with her mother to Pisa on an overnight flight on Wednesday as part of an Italian government evacuation programme. The University Hospital of Pisa said she went into cardiac arrest and died on Friday, less than two days after her arrival. She had a 'very complex clinical picture' and was 'in a profound state of organic wasting,' stated doctors of the hospital, as per the Guardian. The hospital did not provide further details about her condition, but Italian news agencies, citing medical sources, reported that she had been suffering from severe malnutrition. Thirty-one patients and their companions arrived this week in Rome, Milan, and Pisa, many suffering from severe congenital conditions, injuries, or amputations, as per the Italian foreign ministry. Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, Italy has evacuated and received more than 180 children and young people from the besieged Gaza Strip. The UN has raised alarms over widespread malnutrition in Gaza, with experts supported by the organisation warning in a report last month that a 'worst-case scenario' of famine is already unfolding. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The UN World Food Programme reported in July that one-third of Gaza's population endures days without food, while around half a million people are facing imminent starvation. 'The worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip,' said the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) last month urging an immediate ceasefire to ease 'widespread starvation.' Israel's defence ministry said that it will start supplying Gaza City residents with tents and other equipment on Sunday ahead of relocating them to designated 'safe zones'. The announcement came shortly after the government confirmed plans to occupy Gaza City, followed by days of intense bombardment in Zeitoun, the city's largest district. The situation in Zeitoun was 'catastrophic', a municipal spokesperson was quoted as saying by the BBC, citing mass displacement after six consecutive days of heavy Israeli airstrikes, shelling, and demolitions. There have been more than 250 instances of hunger-related deaths in the war-ravaged territory since the start of the conflict in October 2023. Eleven people died from malnutrition last week, as per the health ministry. 'There is no policy of starvation in Gaza, and there is no starvation in Gaza,' Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last month.

Sukhu govt to set up boards to combat drug menace

The Himachal Pradesh government will set up Nasha Mukti Roktham and Punarvas Board to combat the growing drug menace in the state. Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu at Sarkhagaht on Friday said that the board, aimed at preventing drug abuse and reintegrating youth trapped in addiction, will consist of experts from various departments, including home, health, social justice and empowerment, education, youth services & sports, panchayati raj and prison, along with NGOs and social scientists. (HT File) The government is also considering the establishment of a separate de-addiction center for women. Health and family welfare minister Dr (Colonel) Dhani Ram Shandil said earlier this week that the government is exploring options for a women-specific facility, in addition to a potential government-run de-addiction centre in Shimla. The issue of lack of rehabilitation centres in the state had also triggered a verbal slugfest between governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla said, 'There is only one Red Cross-run drug rehabilitation centre in Kullu. We have been hearing about identification of land for setting up a centre in Sirmaur but nothing is moving on ground. This shows the seriousness of the government.' In response to the growing heroin problem in the state, the chief minister also announced the launch of Anti-Chitta Volunteer Scheme. 'These young volunteers will not only help in preventing the spread of chitta but will also assist in awareness campaigns and in providing timely confidential information to the police so that strict action can be taken against drug mafias. A provision for incentive payments will also be made for these volunteers,' the CM added. The CM further said that the government has implemented PIT NDPS Act and seized property worth over ₹42 crore from drug mafias. 'The state has made chitta testing mandatory in police recruitment and to eradicate chitta (heroin) from its roots, I have directed the formation of anti-drug committees in villages and panchayats. Police will gather drug-related information from panchayat secretary, ASHA and anganwadi workers and police constables and share it with the committee. I want timely action on the reports,' he added. The previous BJP government had also constituted a Himachal Pradesh Nasha Nivaran Board for a period of two years which failed to make significant progress.

US suspends visas for Gazans after far-right influencer posts over medical evacuations

The US has suspended visitor visas for people from Gaza following criticism from far-right influencer Laura Loomer over the admission of wounded Palestinians for medical treatment. Palestinians carry aid supplies that entered Gaza through Israel, in Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip. Reuters The United States government announced on Saturday that it is suspending visitor visas for people from Gaza, after a far-right influencer with close ties to President Donald Trump criticised the admission of wounded Palestinians for medical treatment. The move followed a series of angry social media posts by Laura Loomer, who has previously promoted racist conspiracy theories and falsely claimed the 9/11 attacks were an inside job. 'All visitor visas for individuals from Gaza are being stopped while we conduct a full and thorough review of the process and procedures used to issue a small number of temporary medical-humanitarian visas in recent days,' the State Department, led by Marco Rubio, posted on X. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD On Friday, Loomer had urged the department to halt visas for Palestinians from Gaza, alleging they were 'pro-HAMAS… affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood and funded by Qatar,' though she offered no evidence. Her criticism was directed at the US-based charity HEAL Palestine, which last week said it had facilitated the arrival of 11 severely injured children from Gaza, along with their caregivers and siblings, for treatment in American hospitals. The charity described it as 'the largest single medical evacuation of injured children from Gaza to the US.'
