297 new day care cancer centres approved for FY26: Centre
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav stated the measures undertaken by the government in tackling cancer incidences in the country.
In the Union Budget announced in February, the government had proposed that 'all district hospitals will have day care cancer centres. About 200-day care cancer centres will be established in 2025-26".
The day-care centres are aimed at providing chemotherapy -- an important part of cancer treatment -- to cancer patients.
"Following the announcement in the Union Budget 2025-26, so far, 297 new day care cancer centres have been approved for the financial year 2025-26. These centres aim to provide follow-up chemotherapy for patients referred by tertiary care centres,' Jadhav said.
'Unit cost for establishment of day care cancer centres may be up to Rs 1.49 crores as per the requirement and gaps at that facility,' he added. Currently, there are 364 such centres across the country.
Further, the Minister noted that the government has set up "19 State Cancer Institutes (SCI) and 20 Tertiary Care Cancer Centres (TCCC) in different parts of the country' under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD).
The Centre also provides financial assistance to these centres for the procurement of radiotherapy equipment, diagnostic equipment, surgical equipment, and enhancement of indoor civil work and patient facilities for cancer and such other purposes relevant to diagnosis, treatment, and care of cancer.
'The maximum permissible assistance for SCI is Rs. 120 crores and for TCCC is Rs 45 crores,' Jadhav said.
The National Cancer Institute at Jhajjar (Haryana) and the second campus of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute, Kolkata, have been set up to provide advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities.
Cancer treatment facilities have also been approved in all 22 new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
In addition, a population-based initiative for screening, management, and prevention of common NCDs, including cancer, has been rolled out as a part of Comprehensive Primary Health Care in the country under National Health Mission (NHM) through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs.
In a bid to boost cancer care in the country, the government has also enhanced cancer education.
Jadhav stated that the National Medical Commission has taken steps for ease of starting Postgraduate (PG) courses, including for Oncology.
'One can start a PG course with two seats, even with two faculties, without having a senior resident. In many specialties, bed requirements for unit formation have been reduced,' the MoS said.
'Medical colleges/ institutes can apply for starting PG course one year after medical college has been permitted to start an undergraduate course; and government medical colleges can start PG course simultaneously with UG course,' the Minister added.

Gujarat to prepare SOPs to stop duplicate, fake medicines from entering state
The Gujarat government, in a statement on Tuesday, said it is in the process of formulating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to enhance detection and seizures of duplicate and fake medicines from entering the state. 'Recently, it came to the notice of the state government that fake medicines are entering (Gujarat). They are being sourced from outside the state and sold in some places inside the state. Gujarat's Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) has also taken action by conducting on-site inspections. To make this more stringent and strict, the government will prepare an SOP for the inspection of medicines coming from outside the state into Gujarat,' Health Minister Rushikesh Patel was quoted as saying. The SOPs would make registration of imported medicines mandatory, require registration of transporters carrying medicines and cancellation of licenses of chemists or wholesalers who are caught in such dealing with fake medicines. The SOPs will also require people to strictly follow the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Besides, expensive and 'fast-moving' medicines will be closely monitored. The state government will also start three new testing labs in addition to the existing NABL-certified laboratory in Vadodara. To intensify on-site testing, 10 sets of state-of-the-art hand-held devices (Raman Spectrometer with Advanced Technology) will be purchased. Further, a flying squad will be formed. Patel added that with the implementation of these SOPs, Gujarat will become the first state in the country to adopt 'zero-tolerance' towards duplicate and fake medicines. 'The government will take intensive action to prevent fake/spurious/counterfeit medicines from outside the state in Gujarat. In the last 4 years, raids were conducted to prevent counterfeit medicines/cosmetics in the state and more than Rs 6 crore (worth of) medicines/cosmetics were seized…about 75 persons/firms were found involved and action was taken against them,' a statement read. Speaking about the type of activities unearthed so far, the statement said, 'In most of these cases, persons who do not have a valid license for buying, selling and storing medicines are involved and investigation has also revealed that in most of the cases, counterfeit medicines come from outside the state.'

Nadda urged to give permission for MBBS admission in two Odisha medical colleges
Agency: PTI Bhubaneswar, Aug 5 (PTI) The Odisha government on Tuesday urged Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda to grant permission for admission in 100 MBBS seats in two new government-run medical colleges of the state for the academic session 2025-26. Odisha Health & Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling, along with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan who hailed from the state, and others, met Nadda in New Delhi and raised this demand. Mahaling requested Nadda to issue for Letter of Permission (LoP) for admission of 100 MBBS seats in the 2025-26 session in each of Pavitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College (PMPMC), Talcher and Government Medical College (GMC), Phulbani, a statement issued by the Odisha health department said here. Both institutions have recently been established to cater to the growing demand in the medical education sector of Odisha. The respective deans and principals of these two institutions had already submitted their applications for LoP on January 18, 2025, through the National Medical Commission (NMC) portal, the statement said. The NMC teams had also conducted physical inspections of the Pavitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College in June 2025 and Government Medical College, Phulbani in May last. The state government has provided the budgetary grants to enhance facilities and ensure quality medical education at both institutions, it said. When the LoP is granted, two more government medical colleges will be added to the state's healthcare infrastructure, increasing the total number from 14 to 16 government medical colleges. Consequently, the total number of MBBS seats in government institutions will increase to 1800.
