Report: Lakers F Dorian Finney-Smith has ankle surgery
June 12 - Los Angeles Lakers forward Dorian Finney-Smith had surgery on his left ankle and is expected to be ready for fall training camp for next season, ESPN reported on Thursday.
Finney-Smith, 32, has played through the lingering injury for several years, according to the report, and the surgery will make him pain-free. He missed eight games last season due to left ankle issues, per Lakers' injury reports, after sitting out 12 games with the Brooklyn Nets for a sprained left ankle and a left calf contusion which he had said was related to the ankle issue.
Finney-Smith averaged 7.9 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 43 regular-season games (20 starts) with the Lakers, who acquired him from Brooklyn on Dec. 29, 2024. Los Angeles was 29-14 in games he played, including 14-6 as a starter, and qualified as the Western Conference's No. 3 seed in the playoffs.
He averaged 10.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 20 games (all starts) with the Nets last season.
For his career, Finney-Smith has averaged 8.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 28.0 minutes in 591 games (444 starts) for the Dallas Mavericks (2016-23), Nets (2023-24) and Lakers.
Finney-Smith has a June 29 deadline to opt out of the final year of his contract, with a value of $15.4 million for next season. He has been eligible since mid-February to negotiate an extension before the beginning of free agency on June 30.

Sam Burns succeeds where others fail in the second round of US Open
Sam Burns fired himself into US Open contention at the halfway point after taming Oakmont. The 2023 Ryder Cup player carded a brilliant five-under-par 65 to move to three-under and become the clubhouse leader after the morning wave of second rounds. He was one shot behind overnight leader JJ Spaun, who began his round at lunchtime on Friday. Brooks Koepka was sitting at two under overnight but dropped down to two over after a difficult second nine holes saw him hit five bogeys. Jon Rahm was another player who endured a torrid time, especially on the greens, as he tumbled down the leaderboard after a five-over-par 75. 'Honestly, I'm too annoyed and too mad right now to think about any perspective,' the Spaniard said. 'Very few rounds of golf I played in my life where I think I hit good putts and they didn't sniff the hole, so it's frustrating.' Indeed, the terrifying course in Pennsylvania was playing even tougher on Friday, with just two of the players who have completed two rounds sitting under par. Norway's Victor Hovland joins Burns in the red after he carded a two-under-par 68 to sit one under overall. Hovland was at three under with four holes to play but two dropped shots, at the sixth and eighth holes, proved costly.

Fever star Caitlin Clark (quad) to return after missing five games
June 13 - Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark will return to the lineup on Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis against the 9-0 New York Liberty, the team said Friday. Clark, 23, missed the past five games with a left quad strain sustained during the Fever's previous meeting with the defending champion Liberty on May 24. Indiana went 2-3 without Clark, the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year who is averaging 19.0 points, 9.3 assists and 6.0 rebounds in four games this season. Clark posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists in last month's 90-88 loss to New York. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, Clark earned All-Star and All-WNBA honors in 2024 and set a league record with 337 assists while playing all 40 games.
